'To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN V.PARKER, of Stratford, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Book Holder and Best, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved .device for supporting a -book and holding it open.

Io Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar. letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A cross-piece, A, is attached toa strip,"B, of wood, metal, hard rubber, or other suitable material ,near one end of the same, and to the opposite end one shank of a bow-spring, C, is

attached, to the'other shank of which a strip, D, is fastened,which is above thestrip A, and is pressed toward the saine by the spring C. A cross-piece, E is attached tothe free end of the strip D, which cross-piece E vis directly 3o above the cross-piece A. A springclip, F, is secured to the under side of the strip B, the free end of the clip projecting toward the free end of the strip B. The cross-piece of a U- shaped standard, G, is passed between the clip F and the strip B, whereby the stripB will be held on the cross-piece of the standard by the spring-clip. The strip B can .slide on the cross-piece of the standard G, and be moved toward either end of the same, and will always 4o be held in place by the spring-clip F. The

The device is used as follows: rIfhe book is opened and placed on the cross-piece A, the strip B, and the U -shaped standard G, in such a manner that one end of the book will be supportedby the above devices and the other end will rest on the table, &c. The strip D is 5o raised topermit pressing the end of the book under it, ,and when released the .spring C presses the cross-piece E in the end of the book, and holds the same open and holds the leaves down. By moving the strip B toward one end or the other ofthe standard G, the leaves can be held nearer one edge or the other of the book. The inclination 'at which the book is held can be varied by adjusting the devicein such a manner that a greater or less 6o part of the book rests on the strip B.

The device is very simple, support-s and holds the book open very effectively, and in no way injures the book. y

I am aware that it is not new to combine a bracket, a Imedian abutment, two side flaps, a

'platfornnand a spring between the flaps, said spring being fastened at the middle, and having both ends free, so as to hold either one, but'never both, of the flaps simultaneously 7o against the-abutment; also, that it is not new to combine three wires surrounded by a clip, two of said wires being extended up on a curve, so as to form a spring, and connected with links; but
