Description

(No Model.) I
0. W. HARMAN & H. GQSKIDMOR WATCH WINDING DEVIGE.
No. 294,466. Patented Mar. 4, 18 84, v
Horace Slrz'dmore By fltfys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. WESLEY HARIWIAN AND HORACE SKIDMORE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
WATCH-WINDING DEVICE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent .No. 294,466, dated March 4, 1884.
Application filed November 21, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, 0. WEsLEY HARMAN and HORACE G. SKIDMORE, both of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful WVinding Attachment for l/Vatches, of which the followingis a specification. v
Our invention relates to an improvement in those devices in which the winding-key is attached to the inner back; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a watch embodying our invention, the backs being shown partly lifted. Fig. 2. is an enlarged edge View, showing the handle elevated for use as a winder. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section, showing the handle folded. Fig. 4 shows the operative parts detached.
A may represent any key-winding watch, B being the outer andOthe inner back or cap.
D represents a customary winding-arbor. d is the guard thereto, forming a funnel, (1, around the arbor.
0 represents an orifice in the inner back, to permit insertion of the key-pipe.
F is a short windingpipe, whose bore fits the arbor. A flange, f, prevents said pipe rising through a washer, G, to a greater distance than sufificient for attachment, as shown, of handle H, whose stem h occupies a recess, f, in the pipe when in normal inoperative folded position. The orifice c in the inner back is preferably made somewhat largerthan the windingpipe, to allow of adjustment of the washer in alignment with the arbor. The washer-orifice, on the contrary, should snugly inclose the winding-pipe. Two or 111016132tl1S of screw-holes in -the back may permit'the application of the case to divers makes of watch-movements. The washer is fastened to the back by means of small screws. The attachment of the handle H to the windingpipe is by means of a screw-threaded pin, E, so as to make a hinge-coupling. The flattened form of the handle H enables itwhen in the erect position shown in Fig. 2to be used for winding purposes, andwhen in the folded condition shown in Figs. 1 and 3. causes it to occupy so little room as not to interfere with the closure of the outer back in the usual way.
WVe claim as new and of our invention-- 1. A winding attachment for watches, consisting of a short winding-pipe having a retaining-flange, a recess in one side of the pipe, a handle fitted in the upper end of the pipe, whose shank occupies the recess when folded, and pin to hinge the handle to the pipe, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a winding-arbor having a guard-plate to form a funnel surrounding the arbor and an inner back hav the inner back, and a handle hinged directly to the short pipe on the outside of the inner back, as set forth.
3. The winding attachment consisting of a short winding-pipe, F, having a flange, f, and a handle, H, hinged within the pipe, in combination with a winding-arbor, an'inner back hav ing an orifice around the pipe, and a washer, G, having an orifice snugly fitting the pipe and securing the latter to the inner back, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention we hereunto set our hands.
O. WESLEY HARMAN. HORACE G. SKIDMORE.
