ASSIGNORS T0 IVES, BLAKESLEE & CO., OF SAME PLAGE.
TOY PI STO L.
SPECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 294,450 dated March 4, 1884.
Applieation filed Deeemher 29, 1883. (N0 model.)
T0 all wh0m it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT H. DEAN and CHARLES A. HOTOI-IKISS, 0f Bridgeport, in the eounty of Fairfield and State of Conneotiout, have irivented a oertain new and useful Improvement in Toys, of whieh the following is a specifieation.
The toy whieh is illustrated in the aceompanying drawings as an example of this improvement has a handle shaped like the handle of an ordinary pistol, a reeeptaele made in the shape 0f an egg, a barrel or a like a1- ticle forward of the handle, a oover for the receptacle, a movable devioe within the receptaole, and a hammer-like eontriv ance Whereloy the said movable device may be foreed out of the receptacle aforesaid.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a toy embodying our improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the Same.
Similar letters of referenee designate corresponding'parts in both figures.
A designates a handle shaped very muel1 like the handle of an ordinary pistol. Forward of this handle is a receptacle, B, whioh, as here shown, is shaped like an egg. This reeeptaole B and the handle A may be east together in two longitudinal halves provided With interloeking projeetions and reoesses, and fastened together by st:rews or rivets. At the forward end of the recept-acle is a eover, O, which is hinged to the receptaole near the bottom by nieans of a pin, a, passing through lugs b c, eXtending from the receptaole and cover, respectively. This Cover is shaped like the end of an egg. The meetingedges of the reoeptacle and oover are made irregular, so as t0 resemble a break in an eggshell.
D designates a deviee here shown as made in the shape and configuration of a bird. It
may be cast hollow. At the rear it has a shank, whieh extends through therear of the receptaele B, and at the end is oonnected by a pin, d, to a eontrivance, E. 'Ihis contrivance E is pivoted to the handle A, like the hammer of a pistol, and is similarly impelled forward by a spring, F. A trigger, G, pivoted t0 the handle A, and eombined with a spring, H, control s the action of the hammer-like 0011- trivanee E. This hammer-like eontrivanee is so forn1ed as to resemble a rooster. There may be a seat for a cap o1 fulminate at the rear of the receptacle B, and the deviee E may strike a eap or fulminate placed in er on the sa1ne. \Vhen the hammer-like contrivanoe E is drawn back, the device D will be drawn into the reoeptaele B, and the cover O Will then loe closed. By pulling the trigger G the hammer like contrivanee Will loe released', whereupon lt Will foree the deviee D forward, so that it Will open the eover and protrude. A eap or fulminate may also be exploded.
Instead of representing an egg, the receptaele B may represent a harrel 0r analogous artiele, and the devioe D, instead of representing a bird, 1nay 1epresent any other objeet. VVe desire, also, t0 suggest that the receptaole B may represent the Shll of a turtle, and the devioe D the head and front lege 0f a turtle.
What we claim as our i11venti0n, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a toy, the combination of a reeeptaele representing an egg, or a barrel 0x analogous artiele, a cover therefor, a deviee representing a bird or other objeot, a hammer-like 0011- trivance for forcing the Said deviee forward, so that it Will open the cover and protrude, and a trigger, substantially as specified.
2. In a toy, the combination of a reeeptaole representing an egg, a barrel, or.analogous article, a eover therefor, adevice representing a bird 0r other object, a hammenlike coutrivance, and a shank on the deviee f01 couneeting it With the hamnuer-like eontrivance, so arranged that the device mayreeeive a reciprocating motion lengthwise of the receptaoleto open the eover.
ALBERT H. DEAN. CHARLES A. HOTOHKISS.
