Another object of .the invention is to provide a tool 'for inserting a" plug' in a holefoi` Va composition Wall of the tapered truste-conical surface 20, and the maximum diameter of the surface 20 at its outer end is equal to the diameter of bore 26.r A
The inner end portion of the section 16 is formed with a slot 32 in its side Wall. 'This slot 32 is of a length slightly greater than the length of the plug 24 and is of sutlicient circumferential extent to permit the plugto be inserted into the section 1'6.
The plunger 34 has a cylindrical portion 36 of approximately the same diameter as bore 30 which is slidable within bore 30. At the inner end of portion 36 is an whichis smallerincross sectionthan themaximum Ycross A t sectiono'f theV plug, vthe tool having provision for reducing thcplug prior to its entry into the hole.

Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 2 and shows the tool in operative relation to aconcrete -wall having a hole to be plugged, the plunger being shown in an intermediate embodying the position. Y

Fig. 5 illustrates the concrete Wall after the hole has been plugged and the plugged holesealed.
Referring now more particularlyfto the drawing, the tool is indicated ygenerally by the reference numeral 10 ling material indicated at 45, and the outside of the -wall and comprises a tubul-ar plug holder 12. The plug holder y 12 comprises the axially Valigned inner and outer sections Y14 and 16. The tubular sections 14 vand 16 have their adjacent ends weldedV together as indicated at 18.
VThe inner section 114 Ahas an internal surface 20 which i is frusto-conical and which tapers toward the inner end 22 of the tool. The ffrusto-conicalsurface 20 constitu-tes a reducing die for the plug 24 which is provided to lill Va hole. The plug 24 is frusto-conical Vand its external lateral surface tapers `at-apqaroxirnately the same angle as the reducing die formed by the internal surface 20 of section 14. The plug is formed of a suitable material which is yieldable and resilient, such as cork.
The outer section 1'2 :has a cylindrical bore 26 which v extends from the inner end of the section outwardly to the shoulder 28. The shoulder 28 separates the bore 26 from the cylindrical bore 30` which is concentric with bore 26 but of smaller diameter. The bores 26 and 30 Yhave a common axis which is coincident with theV axis enlarged integral collar 38 which is cylindrical and of approximately the same `diameteras bore 26 and slidable Within bore 26. A reduced cylindrical portion 40 extends inwardly from the collar. The cylindrical portions 36, 38 and 40 are concentric and preferably of integral construction.v The plunger is reciprocable within the tubular member 12 from a retracted position shown in Fig. 2 determined by the engagement of collar 38 with shoulder 28 to an advanced position indicated in Fig. 4 determined by the engagement of collar 38 with the tapering internal surface 20 which constitutes the reducing die.
In operation, the tool is placed against the composition wall W with the inner end 22 thereof bearing against the wall and with the small end of the reducing die 20 approximately concentric with thehole H. After the plug has been inserted, the entrance to the hole may be filled with mastic or any cement-like or sealto the inner end thereof where it has a smaller crosssection than the hole, said outer section having a cylindrical inner Surface extending from the outer end of said outer section to the inner end thereof where it merges into the outer end of said frustoeconical inner surface of said inner section, said inner surfaces of said sections being axially aligned with one another, said outer sectionL having a lateral opening to the interior thereof for the in-V sertion of a plug, the inner end of said inner section being fiat and in a plane normal to the axis of said inner scc- Vtion to enable said tool to lbe positioned with said inner section overlying the hole and with the inner end of said inner section flush with the surface surrounding the hole, and a plunger slidably supported in said outer section for movement from a retracted position in which its inner end is at the outerl side of said opening to an advanced position in which its inner end extends into and through said inner section to force a plug in said outer section through said inner section and into the hole, said frustoconical inner surface of said inner section serving as a reducing die to facilitate the entry of the plug into the hole by compressing the plug in response to its movement through the inner vsection in an axially inward di-V Patented July 12, 1960 e 2,944,334 K t A t rection, the outer end of said plunger extending outwardly beyond the outer end of said outer section in all positions thereof between said retracted and advanced positions for striking with a hammer, said cylindrical inner surface of said outer section having an outer portion closely 'receiving said plunger `and an 'inner portion ofV greater diameter than said outer portion separated fromY the later by an annular shoulder, and a collar on VSaid plunger engageable with said shoulder vto determine saidy positions for guiding said plunger in its travel between said positions while maintaining a minimum amount of frictional engagement between said plunger and tubular section.
2. A tool for inserting a solid lfrusto-conical plug of compressible material into a hole of smaller cross-section than the larger diameter of the plug, said tool comprising a tubular member and a plunger, said tubular member havin-g a substantially uniform exterior diameter, and also having a portion at one end thereof having a reduced interior diameter, and a portion at the other end thereof whereat the interior diameter uniformly decreases toward said other end to a diameter smaller than the hole into which it is desired to insert the plug at said other end, said other end of said tubular member being substantially flat and extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal axisV of the tubular member to provide means for contacting the surface around the hole into which it is desired to. inserta plug, a lateral opening through the wall of saidV tubular member to allow insertion of a plug into the interior thereof, said plunger being a cylindrical member inserted within said tubular member for axial reciprocating movement with respect thereto, one end of said plunger being of substantially the same exterior diameter as therreduced interior diameter of said portion at saidY oneend of said tubularmember, the other end of said plunger `having a diameter substantially the same as the i interior diameter at said other end of said tubular member, a central plunger section between said ends thereof of relatively slight axial extent and having a diameter equal to the interior diameter of said tubular member between the portions at the ends thereof whereby said plunger is restrained in the reciprocal movement thereof within said tubular member due to the contact of the central section thereof with the end portions of said tubular member and said plunger is guided in the movement thereof within said tubular member with a minimum amount o-f frictional contactrbetween said plunger and tubular member, Vsaid one end of said plunger extending beyond said one end of said tubular member in all operable positions of said plunger within said tubular member, said other end of said plunger moving between a position wherein said lateral opening is between said plunger and `said other end of the tubular member and a position wherein said one end of said plunger extends beyond said other end of said tubular member on reciprocation of said plunger within said tubular member, said tool being operable on movement of said plunger toward said other end of said tubular member to extrude a plug outward through said other end o-f said tubular member, said plug having been placed within said tubular member through said lateral opening after movement of said plunger toward said one end of said tubular member, whereby said plug is inserted into a hole on placing said one end of said tubular member againstv the surface surrounding the hole with the opening therein concentric with said hole.
