LuBR|cAToR.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 294,399, dated March 4, 1884.
Application led December 14, i883. (No model.) l
a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rIhis invention pertains toimprovements in lubricators for steam-engines, having for its object to effect the proper feeding of the lubricant and the consequent proper lubrication of the parts; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully vset forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my lubricator, and Fig.` 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of casting B, showing the registering mechanism and sight-feed.
In carrying out my invention I employ a reservoir, A, preferably cylindric in form, to contain the oil or other lubricant, to the bottom end of which is applied a petcock, a, to permit the drawing off of the water of condensation accumulating in the cylinder or reservoir. The reservoir or cylinder is -filled with lubricant throughan opening fitted with a screw-plug, a'. i
B is a casting screwed into the top end of the cylinder A, and provided with the doubleapertured plug B', andI with two passages, C
, C', one extending through it from end to end,
except where'interrupted by the plug, While the other passage, which is also interrupted by the said plug, (the apertures of the latter being arranged coincidentlywith the passages C C',) is caused to connect or communicate with a shallow chamber, D, in the upper part of the casting B; This chamber D has in its rear side a mirror or reflector, D', while aplate of glass or transparent material, D2, is set in its front open side, and held in position (it may be) by a frame, D3, secured thereon by screws passing through said frame' and into the Casting. 'Ihe upper end of the casting is screw-threaded, to effect the connection therey of to a pipe leading to the engine and in com- Ihe upper end of the passage@ is needlepointed,77 said needle-point projecting slightly into the chamber D, as at b, while from the upper. side of the chamber D extends through 'the casting a duct or passage, F, which, as Well as the passage or duct C', communicates with the pipe leading to the globe-valve and engine above referred to.
sage or duct G' is a narrow pipe or duct, F', leading down into the lubricant reservoir or cylinder A, with its lower end terminating contiguously to thebottom of the saidreservoir and to the waste or pet cock a.
In operation, the reservoir A being iilled is opened, (the plug or valve B' remaining as yet closed,) when the steaml will rush into and ll the passage-ways and chamber in the casting B, and, as soon as said steam condenses, the plug B' will be opened, establishing communication with the reservoir and allowing the condensed steam or water of condensation to fiow into the latter, whence that into the reservoir, and that from duct C will flow directly into the' reservoir, and sinking by gravity below the lubricant', (a portion thereof remaining or rising into and thereby sealing the lower end of pipe F against the entrance of lubricant thereim) the lubricant C. From this passage it will be seen to enter Ihe quantity of the lubricant fed to the parts to be lubricated is regulated, and to this end is registered by connecting with plug B' the pointer G and scale of graduation G'.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- ' l. Ina lubricator, the combination of the reservoir A, having Screw-plug a', petcock a, casting B, having screw-threaded upper end and apertures C and C', double-apertured plug B', chamber D, having duct or passage F and mirror D', glass D2, secured in frame D3, and
munication with a globe-valve. (Not shown.
Communicating withthelower end ofthe pasp with the required lubricant', the globle-valve from duct C' will pass through the pipe F'` will be forced up through the duct or passagethe chamber D', drop by drop, -through the glass or transparent ,front of said chamber.'
pipe or duet F, substantially as shown, and duet F', substantially as shown, and for the for the purpose described. purpose described. 1o
2. A hibrieator- Consisting of a reservoir, A, In testimony whereof I iiix my signature in having opening therein zi peteoek, a, and presence of two witnesses. b screw-plug a, casting B, having duets C and I CHAR-LES B. MCALVAY.
C', plug B', registering mechanism, and a'serewi NVitliesses: threaded upper end chamber, D, lmviug duet R. LIVERMORE, or passage F, mirror D', glass D2, and pipe or M. QHOEMAKER. f
