Description

(No Model.)
P."P. MONTGOMERY.
FOLDING MAP R'AGK. No. 294,254.: Patented Feb. 26,1884. S
INVENTOR.
4 UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. MONTGOMERY, OF SAN J OSE, CALIFORNIA.
FOLDING MAP-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,254, dated February 26, 1884.
- Application filed October 13, 1ess. (1a model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK I. MONTG MERY,
of San J os, in the county of Santa Clara and the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which V Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved folding map-rack, showing the same in its open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the rack in its closed position; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line at :r, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to folding mapracks; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the front end pieces of my improved map-rack, which are bent to form steps A, to the vertical sides of which are attached eyes A, in which are journaled the ends of the rollers upon which the maps or charts are secured. The lower ends of the front end pieces, A A, are pivoted or hinged'to the lower ends of the rear end pieces, B B, the extremities of the front and rear end pieces, A and B, being connected by horizontal rods 0 O O.
D D represent short rods, which are hinged at one of their ends near the upper extremities of the rear end pieces, B B, and are provided on their other ends with hooks D, adapted to engage with suitable rings, F, secured upon the front end pieces at their upper extremities.
G G represent the spring-rollers upon which the maps or charts are rolled, and which are of ordinary or suitable construction,
H represents a box, which forms a part of the map-holder, and which is firmly secured to the lower horizontal rod, 0, of the rackframe. The maps or charts may be placed within this box when not in use, and are thereby protected from dust and dirt.
From the foregoing description, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, the construction of my improved folding maprack will readilybe understood without requiring further explanation.
It will be seen that my improved map-rack has many advantages. First, it saves time, as the maps, as previously described, are mounted on spring-rollers, and can be readily pulled down and let up again, while the maps or charts, when not in use, may be removed from the frame or rack and placed in the box H, being thereby preserved from dust and dirt and from being lost or in any way dofaced or mutilated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a folding map-rack of substantially the described construction, the combination of the front end pieces, A A, bent to form steps A, and provided with eyes A, adapted to receive the ends of the spring-rollers, upon which the maps or charts are mounted, and having rings Fsecured upon them at their upper extremities, rear end pieces, B B, connecting horizontal rods 0 O G, and hinged rods D D, having hooks D, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The-combination of the folding maprack herein shown and described, consisting of the front end pieces, A A, bent to form steps A,
and provided with eyes A and rings F, rear end pieces, B B, connecting horizontal rods CO0, and hinged rods D D, having hooks D, with the box H firmly secured to the lower horizontal rod, 0, of the rack-frame, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
'FRANK P. MONTGOMERY.
