TOY COMBINATION CRIB AND CHAIR Filed March 14, 1958 INVENTOR. 55752 5E1. ONEK,
53% 5/majm United States Patent TOY CONIBINATION CRIB AND CHAIR.
Lester Selonek, 1404 Kelton Ave., Los Angeles 24, Calif.
Filed Mar. 14, 1958, Ser. N0. 721,431 2 Claims. Cl. 155-44) The invention relates to childrens toys and has particular reference to a dolls bed which can be converted into a dolls high chair.
Toys which stir the imagination of children and enable them to play with dolls in a manner simulating the behavior of real people have always been in great demand. Therehas also always been a place among childrens toys for 'those toys which simulate the exercise of mechanics even among the smallest of children. There is an evident delight during play for a child to be able to manipulate a toy to make it do different things and to conform to different needs as the interest of the child shifts from one thing to another. a
It is therefore among the objects of the invention to provide a new and improved combination child's toy which in one attitude constitutes a dolls bedand which in another attitude constitutes a high chair.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved childs combination toy crib and high chair which is quickly and easily changed from one to the other without it being necessary to remove or add any parts. r r
Still another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combination toy chair and crib which is very simple and practical in its arrangement and also obvious with respect to the manner of manipulation so that even the youngest child by one simple mechanical movement can quickly convert the toy from a bed to a high chair and then back to a bed again.
Still further among the objects of the invention is to provide a new and improved combination toy for childrens use which is extremely simple and rugged in its construction and inexpensive in view of the multiple purpose inherent in the object.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side perspective view of the combination dolls bed and crib shown in the position and adjustment of a bed;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal, sectional view of the head end of the bed;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, sectional view showing the toy in the position of a high chair; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevational view of a portion of the releasable locking arrangement.
In an embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration, there is shown a combination toy crib, or bed convertible into a chair in the form of a high chair which consists in the main of a head end, indicated generally by the reference character 10, a foot end, indicated generally by the reference character 11, and side members, indicated generally by the reference characters 12 and 13.
In the particular embodiment shown in full, the foot end includes legs 14 and 15 connected together by braces 16 and 17 which are joined by spacers 18. k
j The side members in each instance comprise an upper rail 19 and a lower rail 20 interconnected by spacers 21. Between the lower rails is a bottom 22.
The head end, previously made referenc-e to, consists of legs 23 and 24 interconnected at their upper ends by a fixed head board element 25 and at their lower ends by a brace 26. The parts of the bed or crib, where that term may be appropriately employed to describe the toy in one position of adjustment, are all fixed and immovable. By having the rails, braces, and spacers secured together as shown, they form a rugged and rigid framework which serves in one position as the framework for the toy bed and in another position as the framework for the toy high chair.
In addition to the fixed head board element and the brace, the head end includes a fiat head. member 27 which is fixed in right-angular relationship to a flat slat or bottom member 28. The relationship of these two parts is shown clearly in Figures 2 and 3. The members last defined may be joined in customary fashion by nails and glue.
In the position or adjustment prevailing when the toy serves as a bed, the fiat head member 27 is flush with the fixed head board element 25 and closely positioned with respect thereto. At the same time the flat slat member 28 forms an extension of the bottom 22. Overlaps 29 and 30 assist in holding the elements in the position described assisted by the adjustable retainers. These adjustable retainers in one instance comprise an elongated slot 31 in each lower rail 24 near the head end in which is positioned a pin 32, the pin being anchored in the appropriate edge of fiat slat member and extending into the slot 31 in each instance in a loose, rotatable, and sliding relationship. There are also provided at upper ends of the legs 23 and 24 notches 33 and 34. In the notch 33 is a pin 35 which is fixed in the adjacent edge of the 'flat head member 27. Similarly, a pin 36 fixed in the shown in Figures 1 and 2, the relationship just described.
applies. In that position the engagement of the pins 35 and 36 in the notches 33 and 34 hold the fiat head member in vertical position flush with the fixed head board member 25 with the aid of the overlaps 29 and 30, and the engagement of pins 32 in slots 31.
When the bed is to be changed into a high chair, the child, by grasping a handle 39, lifts the pins 35 and 36 from notches 33 and 34, which motion at the same time shifts the pins 32 toward the right hand end of the slots 31 and the flat head board member and slat member, joined together as they are, may be pivoted about the pins 32 from the position shown in Figure 2 to the position shown in Figure 3. in the last identified position, the pins 35 and 36 come to rest in notches 37 and 38 which are adjacent the lower ends of the legs 23 and 24. In this last defined position of adjustment, the pins 32 come to rest at the lower ends of the slots 31, as viewed in Figure 3. Consequently, there is a support for the fiat slat member 28 which becomes the seat of the high chair, and also becomes a support for the flat head member 2'7 which becomes the back of the high chair; and the seat and back portions thus defined are firmly held in position.
As shown, the foot end 11 of the bed in the high chair position serves to support the structure by engagement of the legs 15 and braces 16 and 17 with the floor. Obviously, therefore, the side members become, in effect, the legs of the high chair and the fixed head board element 25 appropriately becomes a tray for the high chair. To convert back again from a high chair to a bed, the
child merely again lifts .upon the handle 39 raising pins 35 and 3.6 from notches 7 n n at the same time moving pins 32 upwardly within the slots 31. The com bination head member 27 and slat member 28 is then again tilted counter-clockwise with respect to the pins 32, as viewed in Figure 3, back to a position where the pins 35, v3 6 again fall into the slots 33, 34 and at the same time he pins 2 slid ac al g t lo .1 and the overlaps 29 and 39 re-engage.
,In both positions, namely, bed position and the high chair p i i n, the com inati n h d member nd l member are firmly secured, although readily releasable. Hence the interchange between the two adjustmen is ex m y s mple and. bvious to the smallest child and needs n me hani al manipulation other than simp y ifting up on the handle to chang ei h r y- Th re has accordingly b en herein shown and described a very simple and rugged com inati n toy which incorpora es all of the es ential elements of two entirely diiferent toys constructed in a form which is readily usable.
Whilel h ve herein shown an escri e my inven i n in what .1 have conceived to be he m s p actic l a preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures m y h mad therefrom within the s pe o my inve tion, which i n t to be limited to the details disclosed herein but is to be accorded the full scope of the claims so as to emb a e any nd all eq ivalent d vices.
Having describ d inv n i n, what I claim s new and desire to se r y L tters Paten i 1.. A toy forming a combination be and chai comprising aiirame having a head end, a foot end and side members conne ti g said h n foot ends, .a p ir of gs on he foot end, a p ir f eg n he he en and a lower rail on e ch side mem er t h t he respectively adjacent legs on the head and foot ends, said head end C mprising a fixed head boa-rd element attached to upper ends of the legs at said head end, and a movable head board element comprising a flat head member and a fiat slat member attached to each other at adjacent transverse edges in right angular relationship, means forming a pair of aligned slots in the respective rails adjacent the head end, a pivot pin in each side edge of the slat member pivotally received in the respective' slot, said pin being movable along the slot during adjustment, a pivot pin in each side edge of the head member, means forming a pair of notches in upper ends of the legs on the head end receptive of said last identified pins with the toy in a bed adjustment and means forming a pair of notches in the lower ends of ,said last identified legs adjacent the lower ends receptive of said last identified pins with the toy in a chair adjustment wherein the slat member jorms a chair Seat and the head member forms a seat back when the foot of the frame rests on the floor.
2. A toy forming a combination bed and chair, comprised of two relatively movable parts, which include: a bed frame adapted to stand either in bed position or upright on its foot end in chair position, said bed frame having an opening at the he d board end; a m ttress support in said bed frame extending from the foot there.- of to a point spaced from the head a distance corresponding to seat depth; a chair member comprised of a back and seat rigidly connected to each other in fixed angular relationship and fitting into said frame with the back fitting said head board opening and the seat extending to said m ttress uppo t rm a par thereof; slid ng hinge means n id e for rotatably mo nting s id chair member in said bed frame; and two position look ing mean for ho ding said chair member selectively in position as head board and mattress support or -;1'ota ted-- into a seat position h sai b frame stan ing p ig onitsfoot end.
