Description

June 7, 1960 H. sTAcH HOT AIR REGISTER Filed om. 15, 1958 INVENTOR. ,'cejn/ Smc/l MM W ,47'7'0'0/5/ United States Patent:`
Hor Am REGISTER Helen Stach, 15273 Fordham, Detroit, Mich.
Filed od. 15, 1958, ser. No. 767,376 i z ciaims. (ci. 98-101) In general my invention pertains to a household heating system in which air, heated by a furnace, rises through ducts and passes through outlets or registers in the walls of the respective rooms into said rooms.
More specifically, the invention is directed to the said outlets commonly known as registers. As a rule, a register includes a housing having a rectangular frame at the front portion thereof said front portion projecting into the room in which the register is located. The register is mounted at the outlet end of an air duct and is of a size to exceed the area of the opening of said duct.
Disposed within said frame or forming a part thereof is a grill or screen through which the air from the duet may pass into the room. The register includes also a damper which is located behind the grill and which may be operated from insidethe room 'by means of -a handle extending outwardly.
The housing of the register is permanently secured to the wall and no access may be had to the interior of the register without disconnecting the whole front portion of the housing including the frame part. This procedure may result in cracking the plaster in portions back of the frame and adjoining said frame.
In time, the air passing lthrough a register will deposit in its interior, including the damper, a quantity of dust, and as the front partion of the register, including said grill, is permanently set in its place, there is no way of getting into 'the interior of the housing for the purpose of removing the dust. A removal of the housing or the front portion of the housing, as the case may be, may result in cracking the plaster of the wall in portions in which the register is set, 'back of said frame, and in portions adjoining said frame.
In view thereof, I have devised a register in which the grill at the front of the housing is a separate element from other elements thereof, said grill being of a type which may be easily and readily Withdrawn from its normal location to afford access to the interior of said register.
I shall now describe my improvement with respect to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the register;
Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view of the register on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the view including a part of an air duet;
Fig. 3 is a' sectional view of the register on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the frame of a modified register;
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of a grill which is adapted to be used in conjunetion with 'the frame shown in Fig. 4.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The register shown in the drawings includes a housing which is mounted close to the fioor level 11 of a room, the front portion of the housing projeeting forwardly of the surface 12 of |'the wall 13 of the room in which the register is located.
2,939,377 Patented June 7, 1960 rice The housing includes two rectaugular side walls 14, a top wall 15, and a bottom wall or 'base 16. At the front the housing is defined .by a marginal wall which forms arectangular frame. The frame is composed of two Vertical sides 17, a top portion 18 integrally connected to said sides, and a bottom portion 19 being disp'osed in the same plane. Each of the side members 17 includes a marginal portion or flange 20 which is bent inwardly so that said marginal portion is disposed parallel to the respective side wall '14 of the housing (Fig. 3). Bach of said marginal portions 20 is provided with a Vertical guding groove or channel 21 to which I shall refer again. The top portion 18 of the frame includes a marginal portion which is bent inwardly to form a horizontal ledge 22 (Fig. 2). The ledge contains a slot 23 which extends from one marginal portion 20 to the other.
The marginal portion 24 of the lower or bottom member 19 of the frame is bent inwardly to a position parallel to the bottom 16 of the housing, and contains a slot 25 extending from one marginal portion 20 to the other.
' The slots 23 and 25 are disposed in the same Vertical plane which also passes through the guiding Vertical grooves 21. v
Fitting into the slot 23 from above is a grill which has the form of a rectangular plate having straight Vertical side edges 27. At the top the marginal portion of the plate is turned into a horizontal member 28 which serves as a grip for the handling of the plate. The bottom edge of the plate is defined by a straight horizont-al line 29. The plate contains a central Vertical slot 30 which extends from a point close to the top of the plate downwardly to a point close to its bottom edge '29. In addition, the plate contains a plurality of slots 31 which in this case are Vertical but in place of which the plate may contain any type of openings, as the only object of having these openings is to provide outle'ts from the duct into the room in which the register is located.
The side edges of the plate fit into the respective channels 21 of -the frame, while the lower end of the plate is adapted to enter into the slot 25 in the horizontal portion 24 of the bottom member 19 of the frame.
Hinged within the upper portion of the housing of the register, as shown at 32, and extending downwardly, is a flat damper 33 which normally covers the opening 34 in the back of the housing of the register. The opening forms an inlet into the housing from an air duct 35. The. damper' is provided with a handle 36 which passes through the aboVe-named slot 30 in the grill plate for manual operation of the damper from inside the room in which the register is located.
A modified structure of the front portion of the housing and a modified grill is shown in Fig. 4. The grill plate 40 is provided with a single hole 41 at each side. The front end of the housing has the form of a frame 42 which, along its inner edge, has a marginal depressed portion 43 for reception of the grill plate. A hole 44 in each side member of the frame serves for reception of fastening means, such as screws, which may be passed through the holes 41 in lthe grill and |threaded into the respective holes 44. The manner of securing the grill to the plate is only suggestive, as any other means may be used for the purpose. A -hinged grill would 'be one example.
It will be noted that the grill plate contains a Vertical slot 45 for accommodation of a handle, such as handle 36 shown in Fig. 2, and a plurality of slots 46 for passage of air therethrough.
After having described my improvement, what I wish to claim is as follows:
1.
