Description

June 7, 1960 l. H. KRAvrrT BRUSH DEPTH REGULATORS FOR PAINT cANs Filed Oct. 25, 1956 IN VEN TOR. Z-wzff/Zfeftwiz BY MQW ATTEWEK United States Patent O BRUSH DEPTH REGULATORS FOR PAINT CANS Irwin Herbert Kravitt, 8 S. 46th St., Philadelphia, Pa.
Filed Oct. 25, 1956, Ser. No. 618,383 z claims. (c1. is-izLz) This invention relates to a brush depth regulator for paint cans, that is, to a device adapted to be used in a can of paint for insuring that, for the more elicient application of the paint, the brush will be always dipped into the paint to the same depth.
Heretofore, in the use of paint brushes, particularly by amateurs, of the difficulties was that the user would dip the brush into the paint to varying depths, resulting sometimes in having too much paint on the brush, and at other times not enough.
The principal object of the present invention is to provde a simple yet eflicient device adapted to be placed within a paint can, either initially or after the same has been opened, which will oat upon the top of the paint within the can, and provide within the same a uniform measured depth so that when the brush is successively dipped into the paint, the depth will be uniform and substantially the same amount of paint will be taken up by the brush each time it is dipped within the can.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character aforesaid, which is so constructed and arranged as to permit a portion thereof to be removed to permit stirring of the paint Within the can whereby the same may be kept at a uniform consistency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character aforesaid, in which the depth to which the brush is permitted to pass may be adjusted or varied.
The nature and characteristic features of the present invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, in which:
Figure l is a transverse central section of a can of paint having a device therein embodying the main features of the present invention, the same illustrating a preferred form of the invention in which .the device is placed within a paint can prior to the initial sealing of the same;
Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating a modified form of the invention which is so constructed and arranged as to permit the same to be placed within a can of paint after the same has been opened, and which also provides a removable member so that the paint within the can may be stirred and agitated to bring the same to a uniform consistency throughout; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view, but illustrating a form of the invention which is so constructed and arranged that the depth to which the brush is dipped may be readily adjusted.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawing herein are illustrative merely, and that various changes and modifications may be made in the structures shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. l of the drawing, there is shown therein a can 10, of any preferred construction, containing a quantity of paint 11. The top of the can is of the kind so shaped as to permit the IC@v use in connection therewith of the usual sealing lid (not shown).
The device of the invention shown in Fig. l is preferably made of plastic of a specific gravity less than that of the paint in connection with which the same is used.
The device there shown comprises a cup shaped oat member 12, having a flange 13 extending outwardly from the top marginal edge of the cylindrical side walls. The member 12 has a perforated bottom wall 14. Such member may be made of relativev stili plastic if it is desired to place the same within the can before the same is completed. If the device is so inserted within the can before the completion thereof, the ange 13 may exy tend to adjacent the inner surface of the side Wall of the can.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing there is shown a modified form of the lfloat, which is constructed and arranged so that the same may be inserted by the user of the paint after the sealing lid has been removed therefrom. In this instance, there is provided a oat `ring 15 which may be made of material of a flexible character whereby the same may be deformed for the purpose of inserting it within the can, notwithstanding that the external diameter of said ring 15 may be greater than the opening provided in the sealing rim of the can.
The main or body portion of the cup shaped member 12a may be cylindrical as in the preceding form, and may also be provided with a ange 13 which, however, in this instance would be of an external diameter equal to or slightly less than the opening in the sealing ring of the can.
In this form also the lower portion of the cylindrical wall of the member 12a is provided at its lower end with an inwardly extending flange 14B which will serve as a rest for a perforated plate 14h, preferably made of material of a greater specific gravity than that of the paint in connection with which the device is to be used.
By this arrangement, the plate 14b being removable, the paint may, when said plate is removed, be stirred and agitated, whenever it may be necessary to do so to bring it to a uniform consistency throughout.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing another form or arrangement embodying the invention is shown. In this form there is provided a float ring 15b which is internally threaded as at 15C, and the cup-like member 12b is exteriorly threaded complemental to the ring 15b whereby the oat ring may be adjusted vertically with respect to the bottom of the device. Such adjustment is for the purpose of varying the depth to which the brush is inserted into the paint. In this form the perforated bottom 14 may be integral with the side walls, similar to the arrangement shown in Fig. l.
I claim:
l. A brush depth regulator for paint cans, comprising a cup shaped lloat, said lloat =being open at the top and freely rotatable upon the paint within a can, said float lhaving a flange extending horizontally from the side wall of said float, and a perforated bottom through which the paint may pass to the interior of the oat, the outside diameter of the ange being less than that of the top opening of the can, and a liexible oat ring, of larger diameter than the top opening of the can adapted to be deformed and thereby inserted through said top opening into the interior of the can and disposed upon side wall of the cup shaped oat below the flange thereof.
2. A brush depth regulator for paint cans comprising a cup shaped float, said oat being open at the top and freely rotatable upon the paint within a can, said float having a ange of a diameter less than that of the side wall of the can, said flange extending horizontally from the side Wall of said tloat, said cup shaped float having a perforated bottom through which the paint may pass to the interior of said oat, and means for vertically adjusting the ange on the side wall of said float thereby to vary the depth of the paint within said oat.
