- INVENTOB JZZaman 77fa7'cu ATTORNEYS WITNESSES! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON'MAROUS, or NEW-YORK, N. Y.
NECKSCARF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent ne 'aeasoe, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed June 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON lVIARCUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neckscarfs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, especially,to that class of neckscarfs which are composed of a head and an apron united in imitation of a sai1- or-knot, so called, and of a neckband having one end attached to the headand the other or free end arranged to pass through for engaging a stabber. Heretofore in this class of scarfs the terminal of the opening for the passage of the free end of the neckband was at the lower end of the head, and the adjustment of the band was attended with consid- .erable inconvenience, due to the fact that the free end of the band was obliged to pass through the entire length of the head before it could be grasped and drawn through the latter. To overcome this disadvantage is the object of my invention; to which end it consists in making the lower edge or terminal of said passage of the head diagonal, thus allowing the neckband to be drawn therefrom intermediate of the top and bottom of the head, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
This invention ,is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents .a front view; Fig. 2 is a rear view. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of parts. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the head, B the apron, and O the neckband, of the scarf.
These parts are united in substantially the.
usual manner, and the apron, as well as the band, are of ordinary form. The head A, however, is constructed as follows: A piece, A, of the desired fabric is cut to the'shape shown in Fig. 3, and is folded on the line 8, as shown in Fig. 4; then on theeline f, as
shown in Fig. 5; and, finally, on theline g.
The rear end of the folded piece is then fastened by stitches or other suitable means, when the head is ready for use. The fold e serves to form the inner section or breast, I, of the head, the fold f one half, J, of the back, and the fold g the face K, the remain der of the folded piece forming the other half, J, of the back. The back section J is diagonal, and its edges are left free or unat-.
' is obviously facilitated.
-0, for holding the neckband in position.
is preferred to line the headpiece A, in order tached, except at the. point of intersection thereof with the other back section, J, where a few stitches are made to keep the section J in symmetrical position; but before making these stitches the end of the section J, which is the end of the folded piece, is inserted under the sectionJ and stitched or otherwise fastened to the inner section, I. Theback section J forms the passage in the head for the free end of the neckband G, and due to theplane of this section and the free or unattached condition of its inner or lower edgc which latter forms the terminal of said passagethe neckband may be drawn from the head at a point intermediate of its top and bottom, whereby the adjustment of the band 011 said free edge Z of the section J is secured. the usual stabber, It
to give to the head the proper body or fullness; but 'in some cases, asin scarfs for summer wear, said piecemay be left plain. It is evident that the diagonal edge or terminal l of the balid passage can be produced by folding a piece of fabric in other ways than herein describedrand I do not therefore wish to be restricted to this manner of folding, although it is preferable because of the perfect imitation of a sailor-knot thereby produced.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a scarf of the character specified, the
head A, composed of a strip folded to form a across the back section J and unattached thereto intermediate its upper and lower edges, whereby the neckband can be drawn through the heads at points along the width of the back J, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing "witnesses. SOLOMON MARCUS. n s.]
