MORTISING TOOL FOR FACEPLATES Filed March 13, 1959 FIG I United States Fatent O l MORTISING TOOL FOR FACEPLATES Ernest L. Schlage, Burlingame, Calih, assignor to Schlage Lock Company, a corporation Filed Mar. 13, 19515. No. 199,131,
Claims. Cl. 145-25 This invention relates to a mortising tool adapted to be used in forming a shallow mortise in the edge of a door in which is received the faceplate of a latch or lock unit.
In the installation of modern cylindrical and tubular locks a hole is bored in the door from the edge parallel to the opposite faces of the door for the purpose of receiving therein the latch housing. A rectangular faceplate is then secured by screws to said edge so that the latch bolt projects therethrough. By the present invention a tool is provided for defining and partially forming the shallow rectangular recess or mortise within which the faceplate is received. Said mortise is located, by means of the tool herein disclosed, in its correct position relative to said bore.
Heretofore, various tools have been provided for cating and forming the faceplate mortise. One example of such prior art tools is disclosed in Quigley Patent No. 2,422,367, dated June 17, 1947. I
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a more rugged and accurate tool than has heretofore been provided.
Another object 'of the invention is the provision of a mortising tool which incorporates marking means for marking the proper location of the screws which secure the faceplateto the door; In this connection it will be understood that if the carpenter drills holes in the door edge for the faceplate screws and said holes arenot properly located relative to'the faceplate mortise some difiiculties may be encountered in properly positioning the faceplate. For example, the faceplate may not be guided into the mortise when the screws are tightened or the screws may be cocked relative tot he faceplate 'resulting in the sharp edges of the countersunk screws projecting beyond the outer surface of the faceplate.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a mortising tool in which the portion of the tool which enters the latch housing bore to guide the cutters to the proper positions on the door edge is integral with the body of the tool thus enhancing the accuracy of the tool.
Yet another object of the invention is to simplify the construction of the mortising tool and reduce the number of parts thereof by incorporating the screw hole marking means with the cutter securing means.
Other objects and advantages will be seen in the following specification and in the drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a vertical fragmentary section through a door showing the tool in section.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective of a door showing the here which receives the guide portion of the tool therein.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the tool.
Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective of the various portions of the tool in their proper relative positions.
In detail, and with reference first to Figs. 1 and 2, the invention is adapted to be used on a door generally designated 1 having an edge 2 in which a bore 3 is formed 2,938,554 Patented May .31, 1960 ice for receiving therein the latch unit, not shown. A larger bore 4 (Fig. 1) is also formed in the door extending between the opposite faces 5 for receiving therein the latch actuating mechanism which is not involved in the present invention.
The tool comprises a body generally designated 7 which includes a relatively heavy rectangular portion 8. Projecting from one side of portion 8 and integral therewith is a guide member 9 which is cylindrical in form to be snugly but slidably received in bore 3. Preferably said guide member is cut away to provide a pair of vertically extending flat faces 10, 11 (Fig. 4) for 'a purpose to be described.
Projecting from the opposite side of the rectangular portion .8 of body 7 is an elongated generally cylindrical handle portion 14 provided with a flat axially outwardly directed face 15 (Fig. 1) which is adapted to be struck by a hammer while the'handle 14 is held by the user.
A pair of channel shaped cutter members generally designated 17, 18 are adapted to be secured against the axially directed face 19 of the rectangular body portion 8. Cutter 17 is provided with a pair of vertically extending flanges 20, 21 connected with a web 22. In a somewhat similar manner, cutter 18 is provided with a pair of horizontally extending flanges 24, 25 connected by a web 26. Flanges 20, 21 of cutter 17 are slightly narrower than flanges 24, 25 of cutter 18 so that when said cutters are placed together with their webs in engagement as shown in Fig. 3 the cutting edges formed on the flanges of both cutters are all coplanar and form a rectangular cutting frame around boss 9.
To permit said cutters to pass over guide member 9 thewebs 22, 26 are provided with central openings 28, 29 respectively which are complementary in shape to guide 9. It will be noted that the vertically extending straight edges 31, 32 of opening 28 and the vertically extending straight edges 33, 34 of opening 29 are positioned alongside the vertically extending flat faces 10, 11 of guide 9 thus insuring that the cutting edges of one cutter are exactly perpendicular to the cutting edges of the other cutter.
. For the purpose of securing the cutters 17, 18 to the rectangular portion 8 of body 7 the latter is provided with a pair of axially extending holes 37, 38 adapted to receive therein sleeves 39, 40 (Fig. 4). Cutter 17 is provided with corresponding holes 41, 42 and cutter 18 is provided with holes 43, 44 also for receiving sleeves 39, 40 therethrough.
As best seen in Fig. 1 the length of holes 37, 38 and the length of sleeves 39, 40 and screws 49, 50 are predetermined to when said screws are tightened the points 57, 58 are substantially coplanar with the plane of the cutting edges of cutters 17, 18 so that the operations of cutting the mortise and embedding the markers in the door edge are performed simultaneously.
In operation the guide 9 of the assembled tool is inserted in bore 3 of the door with the cutting edges of cutter 17 vertical and, of course, parallel to the opposite faces 5 of the door. When the cutting edgm are The vertical cutting flanges 20, 21 are thus embedded'in the door to form cuts 60, 61 and the flanges 24, 25 form cuts 62, 63. At the same-time, points 57, 58- form indentations 64, 65;, 1 i. i 7 i 7 It is then a simple matter for the carpenter to drill the two holes for receiving the faceplate screwsfand to chisel out' the shallow mortise "defined by lines 60, A
61, 62, 63 to receive the faceplate. g
It will be noted that thecutting edges do not actually intersect each other but terminate short of each other. It is a simple matter, however, for the carpenter to complete the rectangular cut with his chisel.
The above described tool is relatively inexpensive to make and is foolproof in operation. In additiongthe cutters are easily removed andrepla'ced when it becomes necessary to sharpen theme The abovedetaileddescriptionof the preferred form of the invention is not to be taken as restrictive thereof as it is obviousthat various modifications in design may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention as defined in the following claims.
