SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,779, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed 'November-14, 1883. (No model.) Patented in France May 5, 18533, No.155,301.
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, Diivin PERRET, engineer, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland,
. residing at Neuchatel, in Switzerland, have invented an Improvement in lVatches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to reduce the number of parts in the mechanism for setting the hands of watches, so as to provide a device that shall be very simple in construction and not liable to get out oi' order.
The parts composing my device for setting the hands of watches consist of a wheel upon the central or minute-hand arbor, a wheel within a recess in the cap-plate, and meshing with the first-named wheel, and a key that is made with a square end, and a cylindrical portion between the squared end and a knob or button-head outside of the cap-plate. -Vhen the key is drawn outwardly, its squared end passes into the square opening in the center ofthe wheel, and by turning the key by means of the head motion is communicated through t-he gearing to the arbor of the center-wheel, and the hands are turned for setting them. W'heu the key is pushed in, the cylindrical portion of the key comes within the square of the wheel; hence the turning of the key does not rotate said wheel, and no movement is given to the hands.

P is a cap-plate, that replaces the usual hinged inner case of a watch. This plate P is held in place by screws 2 2, that pass into the ring oi' the watch-case; but said plate may be secured in any desired manner. In consequence of this plate P not being hinged, I provide an opening in t-he plate P, in order that the balance O may be visible, and this opening is covered by a glass, t, held in place by a ring, L, that is screwed or otherwise fastened to the plate. I also provide a second opening at F S in said plate, to give opportunity for moving the regulator T. P might be made wholly of glass.
R is awheel secured to the arbor of the center-wheel of the watch, and r is a wheel that occupies a recess in the plate P, or the space between the plates P and Z), and gears with t-he wheel It. has a square hole at its center, of a size to receive the square q upon the stein of the key Q. There is a plate or bridge-piece, Z, nextthe plate P, to hold the wheel yr in place, and there is a hole in this plate Z) of a size to allow the squared portion q of the key to turn freely therein. The key Q has acylindrical portion between the squared portion and the knob or head, and when the key is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the squared portion l is cut of the square hole in the wheel fr, and the cylindrical portion of the key is within the square of said wheel 1'; hence any turning movement given to the key does not rotate the wheel i', and the wheel l1' is free to revolve around the cylindrical part of the key. XVhen the key is drawn outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4, the squared portion q lls the square hole in the wheel o', and by turning the key by means of the head or knob the wheel 1' is turned, and by it motion is given to the center-arbor of the watch and the hands are turned i'or setting them. The squared portion of the key prevents the key being pulled out too far and detached from the plate P; and if the key should not be pushed in after setting the hands it will be pushed in by the ease E when that is closed.
It will be evident that the key Q, with its square, might be used to wind the watch, the key passing into the arbor of the spring-barrel, or the wheel r being geared to a wheel upon the arbor of the spring-barrel.
I claim as my inventionl.
