WITNESSES: INVENTOR WM ywww' A ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BRYAN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR on ONE-HALF TO ALPHONSO GOODRICH, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,713, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed June ll, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all, whom it may concern I Be it known that I, GEORGE BRYAN, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Oouplings, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention is to provide a self-adjusting linksupporter located within the draw-head, as will hereinafter be shown.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 2 is a' front viewof a draw-head, showing my improvement. Fig. 3 is a view of the selfadjusting link-supporter, and Fig. 4 is a view of one of the side pieces of the link-supporter.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts in the different drawings.
A is the draw-head of a car-coupling, having the pin B and link 0. In the mouth of the draw-head is placed the se1f-adjusting1inksupporter D, which is made in the form shown in Fig. 3. It is attached to the sides of the mouth of the draw-head by means of bolts passing through eyes or holes F at the upper ends of the sides or arms E and into the sides of the jaws. The link-supporter swings or plays freely-upon these bolts, and is-so suspended in the mouth of the draw-head that it hangs flush with the oval faceof the head, as shown at Fig. 1. When the link Ois inserted in the draw-head, it rests upon this supporter.
When two cars of equal height are coupled together, the link is in a horizontal position, as shown at a, Fig. 1; and when two cars of unequal height are coupled together, it is in an oblique position, as shown at b and c, as I the Case may be. The widely-opened mouth of the draw-head freely allows this canting of the link, as required.
I claim In combination with a draw-head of a can coupling, the self-adj usting linksupporter D, as and for the purpose shown.
GEORGE BRYAN.
