' WILLIAM F. STARK,
.VOLTAIC' PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PLASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,679, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed September 20, 1883.
T0. aZZ whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. STARK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Porous or Adhesive Plasters, of which the followingis a full and complete description, refmetals by contact with the acid secretions of the body; and it relates more particularly to the mode of placing and attaching such metallic pieces on the plaster.
I am aware of Collins patent, No. 116,562.
' July 4, 1871, and aware, also, that it is not new to provide in porous or adhesive plasters metallic strips or wires, to produce a galvanic action.
What I wish to accomplish by my invention is to provide against the skin-poisoning resulting from the contact of copper with the body; and this I accomplish by attaching the zinc to the adhesive side only of the plaster, and the copper to the reverse, connecting, however, the zinc and copper in such a manner, as described below, that a voltaic current will be excited between the two metals when the plaster is applied.
In the accompanying drawings is shown in plan in. Figure l and in section in Fig. 2 a porous plaster with my galvanic cells attached.
P represents the plaster. The cells are shown in the shape of disks or buttons z and c. The buttons 2, which are made of zinc, are shown in the shape of an eyelet-disk, and are riveted through the plaster over the perforated disks or buttons 0, of copper, on the other side of the plaster.
(N0 model.)
Although in the drawings disks are shown,
' I do not wish to confine myself to the shape ofthe pieces of metal.
. It will be readily seen that when the plaster is applied, although the copper pieces do not come in contact with the skin, still they may,
through the holes of the eyelets, be acted upon by the acid secretions of the body, and a volh .taic current will therefore be excited between the zinc and copper.
.The little cells or elements of zinc and copper may be attached to the plaster in any required number, and may be connected together, if desirable, in the usual manner.
Instead of having all the zinc disks on one side of the plaster and all the copper disks on the other, as shown, they may be alternated, so
as to bring disks of both metal in contact with the skin, in which case the copper should be silver-plated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a porous or adhesive plaster, of the eyelets of zinc on the adhesive face thereof, and the perforated pieces of copper on the reverse side, for the purpose of creating a voltaic current and yet avoiding the cont-act of copper with the skin, substantially as described.
2. In a porous or adhesive plaster, the voltaic elementcomposed of an eyelet-piece of zinc attached through the plaster to a corresponding perforated piece of copperon the reverse side of the plaster, for the purpose set forth, and substantially as described.
WILLIAM F. STARK.
