  • This invention relates to eye protective devices, such as goggles, and has for its principal object the provision of a goggle which will be relatively simple in structure yet eicient in operation. Another object is to provide a goggle having improved means for Ventilating the interior thereof. A further object is to provide improved means for detachably securing a lens member in a goggle. 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-14) This invention relates to eye protective devices, such as goggles, and has for its principal object the provision of a goggle which will be relatively simple in structure yet eicient in operation. Another object is to provide a goggle having improved means for Ventilating the interior thereof. A further object is to provide improved means for detachably securing a lens member in a goggle. Still another object is to provide a goggle having such structure that it may be easily and readily manufactured and serviced. A further object is to provide means for locating or centering the lens members so that insertion of the lens member is facilitated.
These and other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.

Fig. 1 is `a front view of a goggle, embodying our invention, with parts shown in section.

A preferred embodiment of our invention is disclosed in the drawings wherein indicates, generally, a goggle frame which is formed of a pliable, plastic material and has the rim portion 11 which defines a lens receiving aperture 12 extending across the entire front of the goggle. The lower central part of the rim portion 11 extends upwardly so as to define a nose rest 13.
Extending continuously around the inner side of rim portion 11 is a groove 14 in which is positioned the edge of the transparent plastic lens member 15. The upwardly extending central part of the rim portion 11 has an enlargement 16 which is provided at its upper part with the lug 17 which extends upwardly from the bottom of the groove 14. The lens member has a correspondingly shaped notch for receiving the enlargement 16 and the lug 17. This construction insures an accurate positioning of the lens member and so facilitates the insertion of the lens member within the groove 14 since the lug 17 acts as a pilot or guide member.
Since the frame member is formed of a pliable, plastic material, it will be understood that the parts will yield so that they may be separated for the ready insertion or removal of the lens member. After the lens member 15 is snugly positioned within the groove 14, the parts are held in lens locking position by means of a pliable strap 18 which has its lower end integrally formed with the central part of the lower rim portion. The strap 18 extends upwardly across the outer face of the lens member 15 and the free end of the strap is detachably held by means of the snap fastening elements 19 and 20 which are carried, respectively, by the strap 18 and the shield means 21 of the goggle. The shield means 21 is integrally formed with the rim portion and extends therearound and rearwardly where it terminates in the face engaging ange 22. A suitable elastic headband 23 is secured to lugs 24 formed in the sides of the shield means.
2,936,459' Patented May 17, 1960 ICC While the shield means may be perforated so as to provide some ventilation within the goggle, other ventilation is provided by a multiplicity of conduits 25 which are integrally formed within the rim portion 11. The outer openings 26 of the conduits 25 are located on the front face of the rim portion 11 and are positioned around the lens member as shown in Fig. l. The conduits 25 extend from the front face of the rim portion inwardly beyond the plane of the lens member 15 and thence inwardly toward the center of the lens member and terminate in the inner openings 27. By this construction, air may enter the conduits from the front face of the goggle and be directed onto the inner face of the lens member 15 so as to provide elective ventilation and prevent steaming on the inside of the lens member.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that we are able to attain the objects of our invention and provide an improved goggle which can be readily made, as by molding of plastic material. The lens member 15 is preferably stamped from a sheet of transparent plastic material. By means of the lens locating or centering lug, the removal and insertion of the lens member is greatly facilitated. Effective ventilation is provided by the conduits which lead rearwardly from the front surface of the goggle and around the edge of the lens and thence inwardly so that the inner outlets lie substantially in a plane which is rearward of the lens. The strap 18, which is integrally formed in the molding operation, provides a simple yet efficient means for securely holding the parts together and thereby retaining the lens in position. Various modifications may obviously be made without departing from the spirit of our invention as pointed out in the appended claim.
We claim:
A goggle comprising an integral frame formed of pliable, plastic material and having a rim portion dening a lens receiving aperture, an enlargement integrally formed with the lower part of the rim portion and extending upwardly from the central part thereof to provide a nose rest, shield means integrally formed with and extending rearwardly from the rim portion and terminating in a face engaging ilange, said rim portion having a continuous internal groove extending entirely therearound, a one piece lens member formed of sheet material and having its edge positioned in said groove, a pliable strap having its lower end integrally formed with said enlargement and extending upwardly and across the face of the lens member and over the rim portion to the shield means, coacting fastening means on said shield means and the free end of said strap for detachably securing the end of the strap whereby the frame securely holds the lens member, and means for Ventilating the inner portion of the goggle comprising a multiplicity of air conduits integrally formed in the rim portion, each conduit extending from an opening on the front surface of the rim portion and spaced from and around the bottom of the groove to an opening on the inner side of the rim portion behind the lens member whereby air may ilow from the front face of the goggle to the inside thereof.
