Description
UNITED STATES PATENT 'OEFTCE.
OWEN H. JONES, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, vASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK C.' SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAIR-VENTI LATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.r 293,578, dated February 12, 1884:l
I Application filed February 15, 1883. (No model.) l
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN H. JoNEs, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had yto the accompanying drawings, in Which-like letters of reference indicating like parts- Figure l is a side view of a section of a carfloor with my device attachedthereto; and Fig. 2 -is a sectional view of the saine, illustrating the detail of construction.
Heretofore various devices have been used as car-ventilators,many of which are objectionable, because of being complicated, -and many do not accomplish the desired result-to wit, the thorough and complete ventilation of the car; and the object of my invention is to accomplish the thorough ventilation of a car with a simple and cheap apparatus.
. My invention consists in providing a car with aventilator tube or box having an exittube pi'voted to turn and present the opening in a direction opposite to that in which the car is moving, the interior of said box being suitably connected with the interior of the car.
In the drawings, a represents a section of car-floor; b, an air-box; c, an exit-tube; d, a
in any direction. The motion of the car causes the vane d to present its edge. in the direction in which the car is moving, thus causing the opening in the tube c to be turned in a direction opposite to that in which the car moves. The current of air'formed around the orifice in the tube by the rapidly-moving train exhausts the air from the tube and box, and thus from the interior of the car.
The ventilation may be controlled by opening or closing the registers f. I prefer to conneet' the exhaust-tubes with the interior of the car at the bottoni, where thebody of cold and impure air is found. They may, however, be connected at other points, if desired.
The tube c may be secured to the box b with the well-known collar-connection, which permits it to turn. I prefer, however, to hold this tube in position by the rod h, passing from abearing in the tube to one or more crosspieces, g, in the interior of the air-box;
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lis- 1. The combination of air-box b with airpipes e e, said pipes being provided with registers, and said box being provided with an exit-tube adapted to revolve onthe air-box, and provided with ameans to turn the opening in a direction opposite that in which the car is moving, substantially as shown.
2. As a car-ventilator, box b, pipes e ve, tube c, having vane d,'and a rod, h, all constructed and operating in combination substantially as shown. d
OVEN JONES.
