HENRY L. BLODGETT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOFORTI-I VINDOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-CORD FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,554, dated February 1 Application tiled January 23, 1883,. (No model.)
views of the cord-fastener detached and en- I larged, Fig. 5, a top view of the fastener; Fig.
6, a bottom view, and Fig. 7 a vertical section ofthe lower end. g
The object of this invention is to improve the sash cord fastener patented to W. Goforth August 8, 1882,`by giving the fasteneramore 2o secure hold on or attachment to the sash, and
to combine therewith a sash-lock; and its nature consists in the several combinations and improvement of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed as new.
In the drawings, A B indicate the upper and lower sash; C, the cord-tubes5 D, the top plate; E, notch; F, side arm; G, the cord; H, the fasteningpin; a, vertical slit 5 b, crossslit, c, notch in the under edge of the slit b,- d, projecting lip or incline on the armF; e,
notch or stop in the lip d,- f, connecting-pin; y, contraction'or shoulder in the tube c,- h, a tapering or wedge-shaped screw for wedging the end of the cord within the tube under the 3 5 shoulderin the latter.
The tube C in its general construction is similar tom that shown in the patent referred to-that is to say, it `is a completetube atits lower end and a partial tube at its upper end- 40 a suflicient portion being cut away to permit the cord `to pass into or out of it, andthe plate D may have the notch Vof the corresponding plate in said patent or not.
The plate D is provided with a side arm, F, 4 5 which is of sufficient length to reach the sash B, as shown in Fig. 2. The end of this arm is turned up or otherwise made so as to form or have an inclined projection, d, tted to pass under a projecting pin, f, on the sash B. This 5o incline is provided with a notch or stop, e, to
hold the arm F in its proper position.
The pin f may be a smooth pin or aheaded screw. The head-screw will serve to prevent any separation between the sashes A and B when they are locked, while the-smooth pin will require a lesscorrect fitting. It will of course be understood that this pin is not to -proj ect so far as to prevent the passage of either sash past the other, and that, therefore, when the sashes are in exact line with each other, it 6o will be necessary to set this pin in a small ie cess formed for that purpose. Usually such a recess will not be required, as the ordinary off set is sufficient to allow the sash to pass freely.
The lower end of the tube C is provided with two slits, a b, in the form usually known as baycnet-joints77 or catches The horizontalportion Z) of these catches are provided with notches @,which hold the tube C in place when the strain of the sash-weight is upon the `cord G, 7o and it aids in forming a lock for the arm F, as it prevents the easy rotation of the plate `D, and the horizontal portions b are made of a. length sufficient to prevent the unfastening of the tube in turning the arm F to lock or unlock the sashes, and to prevent an undue turning of the plate D a limit-stop may be applied to the sash. A coupling-pin, H, is driven in or run throughthe sash, as shown in Fig.l2, in such position 'that the notches a; b of the 8O tube. C will engage with said pin and thereby lhold the tube C firmly in place, and the notch c will prevent it from getting out as long as there is any strain on the cord. By taking the strain of the cord off by hand or otherwise, the tube C can be rotated and drawn without difficulty, as it is not necessary to have it iit so tight as to make its rotation diiicult. The placing of the -pin H down in the sash gives it a strong hold, lso that heavy glazed sash may 9o be securely held without danger of pulling the tube out, as is the case when they are only held by a single wood-screw at the top.` The ap plication of this catch to the tube C makes it necessary to free the lower end of the tube from the cord. To accomplish this purpose of getting the cord out of the way and give it a firm fastening, I provide the interior of the tube with an annular shoulder, g, which the end of the lcord passes, and then insert a com- 10o mon wood-screw, It, which securely attached the end of the cord to the tube by wedging the end of the cord Within the tube under the shoulder g.
The operation of this improved device will be readily understood from its description, and it will also be understood that for the upper sash the plate D and its attachment will be omitted, and that when the plate D and arm F are both applied to each side of the lower sash the arms F niust be made right and left.
That I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The combiiiation, with the sashes A and B, of the horizontal rotating plate D, having the laterally-proj ecting` side arms, F, provided with the vertical projection d for engaging` the pin on the sash, substantially as described.
HENRY L. BLODGETT.
