Be it known that I, GEORGE J. Snnunn, a citizen of the United States of America, residampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CutterHeads, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip# tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
A This invention relates to improvements in cutterheads for. matching, groo'ving, and iinishing the edges of lumber, of that class composed of two sections operating conj ointl y, and which are vertically adjustable. In this respect .my inventionhas special application to that kind of cutter-head shown and described in Letters Patent No. 241,432, dated May 10, 18817 granted to Geo. J. and Samuel J.'Shimer.
My invention consists, iirst, in anovel locking device, whereby the removable section of the cutter-head is secured in any determined position in relation to the xed section; and, second, in thenovel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed.

The letter A represents the cutter-head, composed of two sections or parts-the lower or sta tionary section, B, and the Lupper or adjustable section, C. The section B (see Fig. 4) is constructed with a central hub, l), and bored to suit the dimensions ofthe rotating spindle.

in which a set-screw passes from the adjust- 5o able section, as hereinafter more fully stated, against the spindle, and has in its upper portion exterior screw-threads for the purpose of receiving the locking-nut. The baseof this stationary section B is formed with the circular walls b, extending between the bit-holders, and forming against their inner faces a seat or Shoulder. The base ofthe hub and tool-holders is solid, and the toolholders 'E E are made of such strength and dimensions as to receive the 6o tools and meet any strain the required work `may demand. They are arranged, as shown,
at right angles to the axis of the rotation, directly opposite each other and on the same plane. The section C (see Fig. 3) is construct- 65 ed with a depending central sleeve, F, of such exterior diameter as to pass readilyover the hub 'of the stationary section and to permit of easy vertical adjustment, as desired, and is also constructed Vwith the circular walls c, con- 7o necting the re-enforced side. segments, G and G', arranged directly opposite each other, and carrying the cutter-tools.v Between the sleeve F andu the walls c and side segments, G and G', is a space which the coil-spring ts, the section resting on the same. In the side wall of this section, being the one opposite the slot in the hub of the lower section, is iitted a set-screw, H,`which extends through the wall and in the slot a, against the spindle, and lines the tool securely in place. This section G'v has also formed on the upper surface, about the bore, y the wall I, in turn formed with the V-shaped projections g, or their equivalents, substantially as shown, for the purposes hereinafter stated. The side segments or bit-holders of the respective sections are formed with the mortises d, to receive the bits or cutters, and provided with set-screws e, adapted to nt in the screw-holes ff at` or near each end, on the upper surface, to secure the bits or cutters to their seats, according to the direction of rotation. Ihe mortises in the respective sections are, as usual, arranged parallel to each other, and on the same plane. Arranged within the circular walls of the lower section and loosely about the hub thereof is the coil-spring K, or its equivalent, which, when the upper section of the cutter-head is passed over the hub of the lower section, fits tabout the depending sleeve F of the former and exerts sufficientv projections 7L, or their equivalent, corresponding to the spaces between the projections g on the wall I of Ithe upper section of the cutter. It will now be observed that when the nut L is screwed down on the wall I the action of the spring keeps the nut and the section together, and the contact of the uneven surfaces vof these parts effectually prevents the nut from becoming loosened by the rotation of the cutter-head.
The parts constituting-thc cutter-head are put together in the following manner: The coilspring is -passed over the hub of the lower section, finding its seat on the base of the chamber between the hub and the side wall thereof, after which the adjustable section is passed over the hub ofthe lower section,with the segments at right angles to those of the latter, and
with the set-screw on the side next the slot in the hub, the spring passing up in the space between the depending sleeve of the section and the walls until it rests against the roof of the chamber between them, when the lockingcollar or wall, I, surrounding said aperture, u

2. A cutter-head composed of two parts capable of vertical adjustment, the under section whereof is formed with a central screw-threaded hul-b and circular side walls, and the upper section whereof is formed with a depending Asleeve and circular side walls, and having formed on its upper surface'and around its central opening a circular wall with V-shaped projections or their equivalents, in combination with a locking-nut formed with V-shaped projections or their equivalents on its under surface, substantially as described.
The combination, with the lower section provided with a central hub, in which is formed a vertical slot, a, of the upper section fitting over said hub, and provided with the set-screw II, arranged to pass through the slot in the hub, the elastic cushion between the two sections, and suitable means for securing the upper section tothe hub, substantially as described..
