Claims priority, application Germany September 21, 1956 6 Claims. (Cl. 242-65) This invention relates to apparatus for reeling a web of material such, for example, as paper, cardboard, cellulose and the like.
Known apparatus for this purpose consist essentially of a supporting cylinder and a drive for a reeling drum, which drive consists of numerous and complicated means. Thus, for example, apparatus is known wherein a friction roller is arranged on a pivotable bearing arm and, when the bearing arm pivots, :the said roller comes into contact with the reeling drum and causes the latter to 1'0- tate. The friction roller is driven by way of a transmission gear and clutch, through chains, belts or the like. Pneumatic means are provided for moving the bearing arm, said means also engaging and disengaging the friction roller drive. The reeling drum is pivoted by a yet further mechanism driving the reeling.
Such apparatus is complicated and is expensive to make. In view of the high web speeds which are customary nowadays, the driving means are subjected to a high degree of wear and require continuous and careful supervision. When they become defective, time is wasted on repairs, and the resulting stoppages of the machine slows down production. The object of the present invention is to eliminate these disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for reeling a web of material (e.g. paper) comprising a cylinder, driving disc means eccentrically mounted with respect to said cylinder in a position such that a portion only of the periphery of the driving disc means extends outwardly of the cylinder, at driving connection between said cylinder and driving disc means such that the cylinder and driving disc means are rotatable at substantially equal peripheral speeds, a carrier for a reeling drum movably mounted in said apparatus from a position in which the reeling drum is in driving engagement with the driving disc means and is spaced from the cylinder to a position in which the reeling drum is driven by the cylinder, and means for effecting movement of the carrier between said positions, whereby the reeling drum is rotated at a peripheral speed substantially equal to that of the cylinder prior to a web entrained over said cylinder being wound onto said reeling drum.
In this way the advantageous result is achieved that, without complicated driving means and without using a clutch, the reeling drum can be accelerated from rest so as to be rotated at a peripheral speed corresponding to the speed of travel of the web as the position of the reeling drum is changed with respect to the cylinder.
In order to economise in space, the driving disc means comprises a plurality of driving discs having the same or approximately the same diameter as the cylinder. With even a slight shifting of the centre of the driving disc means relatively to the axis of the cylinder, the web which is being wound can be conveyed, without touching the reeling drum which is about to be reeled, between the latter and the cylinder on to another reeling drum which is winding on the web at this time, until the roll nitcd States Patent 0 F 2,935,272 Patented May 3, 1960 changing is effected by pivoting the first reeling drum into the operative position.
Preferably means are provided for varying the relative positions of the axes of the driving disc means and cylinder. Thus the driving disc means may be rotatably mounted on an eccentric bushing which is angularly adjustable with respect to the cylinder, means being provided for retaining the eccentric bushing in a desired angularly adjusted position.
Bushings, antifiiction hearings or the like may be pro vided which run freely on the eccentric bushings. The eccentric bushings may be arranged on the bearings of a shaft in the frame of the apparatus or on a shaft on which the cylinder is mounted. In this way, assembly is advantageously facilitated and it is possible to secure the eccentric position of the driving discs and adapt it to actual working conditions in every way.
In this way the position of the reeling drum relatively to the cylinder, and more particularly the spacing therebetween and the point of contact, can be varied and adapted to the actual working conditions.
Preferably the driving connection between the cylinder and driving disc means is a pin and slot connection. Thus the cylinder may be provided with an outwardly projecting pin or lug which is movably mounted in a slot in the driving disc means.
The driving discs may be arranged directly beside the cylinder and preferably at the end faces thereof.
This invention is illustrated, merely by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of apparatus according to the in- Vention; and
Fig. 2 shows part of a side view of the apparatus of Fig. l, a driving disc and its bearing being shown in section.
The apparatus shown in the drawings comprises a cylinder I, mounted on a shaft 1'5 and provided with an outwardly projecting pin or lug 2 movably mounted in a slot 4 in a driving disc 3 and serves to drive the latter. The slot 4 extends in the radial direction so that, during rotation, movements of the pin or lug 2 in the slot 4 is possible.
The driving disc 3 runs on an antifriction bearing 5 which is mounted on an eccentric bushing '6. The eccentric bushing 6 is mounted on the support frame 14 of the apparatus through the intermediary of a bearing 7 for the shaft 15, the bushing =6 being angularly adjustable about the bearing 7 but being secured thereto at 8 against rotation. Because of the eccentricity of the bushing 6 with respect to the shaft 15, the driving disc it rotates about an axis 10 which is displaced from the axis 9 of the cylinder 1.
The cylinder 1 and driving disc 3 are of substantially the same diameter but, due to the said eccentricity, a portion only of the periphery of the driving disc 3 extends outwardly of the cylinder 1.
It will be appreciated that the. cylinder 1 and driving disc 3 will be driven at the same or approximately the same peripheral speed. Slight speed variations in the driving disc 3, caused during rotation by the movement of the pin or lug 2 in the slot 4, are not important to the operation of the apparatus in View of the slight eccentric shifting of the axes 9 and 10 relatively to one another.
A carrier 12 is pivotally mounted in the apparatus and has a forkshaped end 12 whose prongs are spaced apart to receive the shaft of a reeling drum 11. Pivotal movement of the carrier 12 is effected by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 17, such pivotal movement causing the reeling drum 11 to describe the are indicated by the arrow 18 and thus to move the reeling drum from the position indicated at A to that indicated at B. At A the reeling drum 11 is in driving engagement with the driving disc 3 but is spaced from the cylinder 1. It will be noted from Fig. 1 that by the time the reeling drum, in moving from A to B, reaches position C the reeling drum is driven by the cylinder 1 and continues to be so driven throughout its movement into position .3.
Accordingly a web 13 (of paper, cardboard cellulose or. the like) fed over the cylinder 1 will not be contacted by, the reeling drum 11 at position A and is contacted by, the reeling drum 11 only when the latter is rotating at the same, or substantially the same, peripheral speed asthat of the cylinder 1 and therefore at a peripheral speed the same or substantially the same, as the linear speed of the web 13. In contrast, therefore, to the prior art, the reeling drum is not rotated from rest on contacting the web 13.
,When therreeling drum, reaches position B its shaft is received within a bearing device-16 which is movable along a horizontal surface on frame 14 of the apparatus. When reeling is complete, the bearing device 16 is in the position shown in Figure 1, the said position being such that the shaft of the reeling drum 11 will have moved out .of the forkedehd 12' of the carrier 12, the latter then being pivoted back to pick up a fresh reeling drum jllat position A;
The fully reeled drum 11 is then removed from the bearing device 16 whilst the new'reeling drum 11, which is already rotating at the correct speed at position A, is moved by the carrier 12, to position B. During pivotal movement of the new reeling drum 11 to position B, the
bearing device 16 is moved (by meansnot shown) towards the left as seen inFig. 1 so that it will be correctly positioned to receive the shaft of the new reeling drum. I claim: I 1. Apparatus for reeling a web of material comprising a support, a cylinder mounted on said support for rotation relative thereto, driving disc means also mounted ,onrsaid support and being arranged eccentrically with respect to said cylinder in a position such that a portion only ofthe periphery on the driving disc means extends outwardly of the cylinder, a driving connection between said cylinderand driving disc means such that the cylinnet and driving disc means are rotatable at substantially equal peripheral speeds, a carrier for a reeling drum rotatably mounted in said apparatus to turn from a position in which the reeling drumis in driving engagement with the driving disc means and is spaced from the cylinder to a position in which the reeling drum is driven by the cylinder, and means for efiecting movernent of the carrier between said positions, whereby the reeling drum is rotated at a peripheral speed substantially equal to that of the cylinder prior to a web entrained over said cylinder being wound onto said reeling drum.
2 Apparatus for reeling a web ofv material comprising a cylinder, driving disc means eccentrically mounted with respect to said cylinder in a position such that a portion only of the periphery on thedriving disc means extends outwardly of the cylinder, a pin and slot driving connection between said cylinder and driving disc means such that the cylinder and driving disc means are rotatable at substantially equal peripheral speeds, a carrier for a reeling drum rotatably mounted in said apparatus to turn from a position in which the reeling drum is in driving engagement with the driving disc means and is spaced from the cylinder toa position in which the reeling drum is driven by the cylinder, and means for effecting movement of the carrier between said positions, whereby the reeling drum is rotated at a peripheral speed substantially equal to that of'the cylinder prior to the web entrained over said cylinder being wound onto said reeling drum.
3. Apparatus for reeling a web of material comprising a support, aicylinder mounted on said support'for rotation relative thereto, driving disc means also mounted on said support and being arrangedeccentrically with respect. to said cylinder in a position such that a portion only of the periphery of the driving disc means extends outwardly of the cylinden'means for varying the relative positions of the axes of the driving disc means and cylinder, a driving connection between said cylinder and driving disc means such that the cylinder and driving disc means are rotatable at substantially equal peripheral speeds, a carrier fora reeling drum rotatably mounted in said apparatus to turn from a position in which the reelingdrum is in driving engagement with'the driving disc means and is spaced from the cylinder to a position in which the reeling drum is driven by the cylinder, and means for effecting movement on the carrier between said positions, whereby the reeling drum is rotated at a pcripheral speed substantially equal to that of the cylinder prior to a web entrained over said cylinder being, wound onto said reeling drum.
5. Apparatus for reeling a web of material comprising a cylinder, driving disc means eccentrically mounted with respect to said cylinder in a position such that a portion only of the periphery of the driving disc means extends outwardly of the cylinder, means for varying the relative positions of the axes on the driving disc means and cylinder, means defining a slot in the driving disc means, an outwardly projecting pin on the cylinder movably mounted in said slot whereby the cylinderand driving disc means are-rotatable at substantially equal peripheral speeds, a carrier for a reeling drum rotatably mounted in said apparatus to turn from a position in which the reeling drum is in driving engagement with the driving disc means and is spaced from the cylinder to a position in which the reeling drum is driven by the cylinder, and means for effecting movement on the carrier between said positions, whereby the reeling drum is rotated at a peripheral speed substantially equal to that on the cylinder prior to a web entrained over said cylinder being wound onto said reeling drum.
