- ROOFING F'ABRm. I No. 293,491.. I Patented Feb. 12, 1884'.
" W JNVENTOR A TTORNEY N, FEIEHS Plmln-lllhupmnhel. Washington. 0 cv UNITED STATES PATENT O F CE,
HENRY M. MINER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES BARCLAY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROOFING FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,491, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed June 22, A1883. (Noinodeh) To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. ll/IINER, a
citizen of the United States,.residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing Fab- 1 ric; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section'of my improved roofing material, and Fig. 2 a perspective of same inform of a roll partially un wound- Thisin'vention has for its object an improvement in ready-made roofingthat is, a fabric provided with a tarred and sanded or pebbled surfacerequiring nothing additional to fitit for use.
My improvement consists in the compound fabric hereinafter fully described and claimed. I take a piece of coarse canvas or burlap or similar fabric, woven in such manner as to be somewhat open in texture, and saturate it with melted tar in any suitable manner. To one side of such fabric I stick a facing of paper, tarred as roofing-paper usually is, and on the other side I place a layer of sand or peb--- bles. The whole is compacted by pressure 30 suitably applied, and forms a very durable roofing fabric, ready for laying in place. i The woven central fabric is completely protected against moisture, since it is covered in by the tar-paper and sand, and therefore will not rot away. It aflords a better foundation for the sand or pebbles than is afforded by paper, by reason of the interstices of the cloth or fabric. The fabric itself is protected from in- HENRY M. MINER.
