NITED STATES Mrs P. LILJEHOLM,
OF ST. LOUIS, MISQOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO HENRY GOETZ, OF SAME PLACE.
RAlLWAY-FRElGHT-CAR DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,479, dated February 12, 1884. Application filed November '7, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known'that I, NILs P. LILJEHOLM, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Freight-0ar Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined graindoor and outer door.
Reference is made to the claims for statement of invention.
Figure l is an outside View of the door when closed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section at 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front View of the door when open. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section at 4 A andB are side timbers of a freight-car. C is the floor, D the side walls, and E the door posts. The door consists of an under part,'F, and an upper part, G, fitted together at their meeting edges by a bevel-joint, H. The lower part, F, is supported at the upper portion by trunnions I,which rest in open-topped notches or slots j in metal side pieces, J, which are secured to the side posts, E. The side pieces are set back from the corners of the posts, as shown, so as to form arabbet-bearing for the edge of the part F, which fits closely against the pieces J and the posts E, so that no grain can leak through when the caris loaded with grain in bulk.
K is a metalstrip or cleat overlapping the lower edgeof the lower parts, said edge enter.
ingthe groove thus formed between the cleat and the floor of the car. The upper edge of the thisbeveled edge fits snugly the lower (beveled)edge of the upper part, G, so that the upper part holds the lower part down in place. I prefer to bind and thus protect the upper edge of the lower part or member, F, of the door with a bar, F, of iron, whose ends project and form the round trunnions I. The part of the bar F forming the top of the member is made fiat to fit the lower edge of the upper member, G. The bar F is held in. place by straps Fflwhich are sunk into it on top and extend down upon the outside and inside. The upper part or mem- 'ber, G, is suspended upon hangers L that slide an upper and lower, the upper on a rod, M, that is secured to the side of the 0 car beneath the eaves. The part G can be moved from the closed position shown in Fig.
1 to the open position shown in Fig. 3 without 5 5 moving the lower member or part, F, owing to the manner of connecting them.
Nlis a bar whose ends are secured to the upper part, G, and which stands out from the upper part, so as to. allow the free passage along it of the upper link of a chain, O,whose other end is attachedto the lower part, F. The
means of attachment allows the upper part to be opened or closed when the lower part is shut, and allows the lower part to be opened or closed when the upper part is open; but neither of the parts of the door can be sepa rated fromthe car. The lower part, when open, may be supported by the two trunnions I, resting at one end in a slot, j, and at the other in slid in inclined position to one side on the rod M, the bar N sliding in the upper link of thechain connected to the lower part, F. This R on the lower part, 7 5
the upper part, G, is un 8o fastened from the side posts and lower part and leaves the lower part free to be lifted away from the door opening out of the groove between the strip Kand the floor to one side, the upper link of the connectingchain sliding along the bar N until the lower part is hung on a side piece, J, and hook I.
To replace the door, the lower part is first lifted off its supports, the chain sliding to one side with it on the bar, and then dropped into the groove, its trunnions resting in the open ings j. The upper part is next inclined on its supporting-rod, so as to pass the upper end of the side piece and staples in the way, and slid to normal position over the lower part, the bar N sliding in the upper link of the chain.
I claim as my invention- 1. Afreight-car door consisting of two parts, part secured to ICC Q I warm the car, and the lower part connected to the I member, F, secured in place by the cleat K, upper part by a bar and chain. side strips or pieces, J, with open slots j and 2. The combination of a car-body having it trunnions I, and thenpper member, G, secured door-opening, side pieces having slots at top to the side of the car and bearing on the top of and a strip at bottom to form a groove, a door I the lower member, F, for the, purpose set forth. 20 in two parts, an upper and lower, the lower 5. The combination, in a freight-car door, of part having trunnions to occupy the slots, and a lower n1e1nber, F, supported in position by the upper part supported over the lower part, trunnions I, side pieces, J, a'ndcleet K, and
and the lower part supported in the groove and all-upper member bearing on the lower mem- 10 between the side pieces by the trunnions. 3. The combinatiomwith the lower part hav'- ing trunnions, and a side piece having a slot at its upper end, of the hook to support the Vitnesses: lower part away from the door-opening. SAML. KNIGHT, I 5 4. A freightcar door composed of a lower BENJ. A. KNIGHT.
ber, and supported on hangers L and rod M, 25 substantially as set forth.
