THOMAS A. EDISOX, OFl M'EXLO PARK, XIY JERSEY, ASS'IGXOR TO THE EDISON ELECTRIC LIGHT COMIAXY, OI-` SEH' YORK,- X. Y.
INCANDESCNT ELECTRiC LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nc. 293,434, dated February 12,- 1884.
Application led August 7. lez-2 (No model.)
To all whom, z't may concern:
Be it known that, l, TnonAs A. EDIsoN, of Menlo Park, in the eounty of Middlesex and tate of New Jersey., have invented a new and usefulI Improvement in the Manufacture ot'Ineandeseing Electric Lamps. (Case No. 377;) and I do herehy declare thatI the lfollowing is a full and exact description of the same, referenee being had to the aeeompanyinr drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.` l
I have. found that i'n the mauutleture of incandescent elet-tric lamps the best mode of attaehing the ineamlesei'n;r etpnnluetor to the wires leading thereto is to eleetroplato the joint or union between them. In order to perform this operation, it is neeessar to first attach the wires to the enlarged I end lof the earhon hy some temporaryY meehz'tuieutl means.
To furnish convenient and etlieient means for this` purpose is the ohjeet of my invention. )Iy arrangement is as follow-s: The copper inner extremities ot' the leading-in wires are formed into long tlat strips, whose width should be about equal to that of the enlarged ends ofthe eat-hon. Each strip is then bent overtwiee lengthwise on itself, and the enlarged earhon ends are inserted in the upward head.l The sides ofthe st rip may he pressed down upon the. carbon `as elosely as is necessary to hold it. The joint is then electroplated, preferably in the manner shown in my previous application,(Serial N 24,440.)
The aeeompanyifng drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a view showing the carbon held held during the operation of' eleetroplatin".
\\'hat I elaim isl. In an ineamlesei-ug eleetrie lamp, the device for holding an end ot' the carbon during,r the process of eleetroplating, consisting of 'a 'tlatipieee ot' @opper lient twiee lengthwise upon itself, substantially as set forth. i
2. The leading-in wires of an ineandeseing eleetrie lamp, havingr their inner extremities formed into or attached to thitxnetal strips, eaeh heut tw'iee lengthwise upon itself, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
This spreitieation signed and witnessed this 5th day of Det-einher, LSSI.
