To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. Ensrwrcx,
' of the city, county, and State of New York7 have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Revivifying Bone-Black, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The ordinary process of revivifying boneblack after it has lost its effectiveness from use consists in iii-st thoroughly washing the boneblack in water, drying it, and then reburning it in retorts out of contact withV air.
The apparatus in general use for reburning the'bone-black consists of a number of vertical retortsplaccd in a kiln, which retorts pass through the top and bottom of the kiln. At the top the retorts receive the bone-black, which, after being subjected to high heat, passes out at the bottom into sheet-iron coolers exposed tothe open air and often there is placed over the kiln 4containing the retorts an apparatus for drying the bone-black before it enters the retorts by heat obtained from the f waste gases from the kiln, thus effecting a saving'in fuel.
My invention seeks to effect a still further saving in fuel; and it consists, first, in utilizing theheat given off from the bone-black coolers, and, secondly, in utilizing the heat contained in the heated air that has been passed through the bone-black in the drier.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l shows,in sectional elevation, taken on the line w m of Fig. 2, a combined boneblack drier and kiln embodying the-principles of my invention. 4Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken on the line y y of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View taken on the line .a .e of Fig. 1.
The boneblack kiln A, retorts B, placed therein, coolers G, and the valves D at the bottorn of the coolers, are of the ordinary construction.
Around the coolers C are placed the boxes E, to which a forced current of air is suppliedv from blower F through pipe G and one or more branch pipes, H.

Upon the walls which inclose the chamber J is placed thebone-black drier M, whichin this instance s constructed with the central air-passage, N, and side triangular air-passages, O,into which latter passages the pipes L discharge hot air through the side pipes, l?, and valved openings f. The central air-passage,.N,is closed at the top and connected, through opening N and pipe Q, with the tortuous pipe R, placed in the box S, situated immediately'in front of the blower F. From the central passage, N, the hot air, after passing through the bone-black, passes through the pipe Q and tortuous pipe R, and exhausts into the open air at g. The
tortuous pipe R is connected at its lower i'olds with the pipe T, for conducting away water and other matter that may condense in the pipe R; and in the box S are placed the spaceplates h, for deflecting the current of air from the"blower F,-for bringing it in contact with all parts of the pipe R. lThe working of the apparatus is as follows: A force of aircreated by the blower F passes into and through the box or receiver S, and during its passage extracts the heat of the hot air and vapor passing through the condensingpipe R. Thence the warm current of air passes through the pipes G H into the lower part-of the cooling box or boxes E and :around the bone-black coolers C, therein inclosed, to the pipes I at the upper part of the said box or boxes. In passing over and around the coolers G the air absorbs va large portion of heat IOO -kiln-house by radiated heat and vapor is from the bone-black in the coolers. From the pipes I the current of air continues on through the pipes L (where it becomes highly heated) to the bone-black drier M, where it passes through the bone-black and evaporates the moisture contained in the wet boneblack. The current of air passes thence, carrying with it the lvapor formed, through the pipe Q, to the condensing-pipe R, where the vapor is condensed, the heat therein contained being absorbed by the current of air entering the box or receiver S, and the air isvdischarged 'at the end of the condenser into the open air at g.
The advantages which this process possesses over any now or heretofore used and the iniprovements thereby effected are, that a large portion of the heat which, by the ordinary methods of. revivifying bone-black, is lost, is herewith reclaimed for useful purposes-viz., the heat which is radiated by the coolers into 1 the open air, and the heat of vaporization in the drying of the bone-black, which is absorbed' by the air-current when the latter enters the box or condenser S, after lea-ving the blower-and the excessive heating up of the avoided. The current in the cooler box or boxes E may be diverted by partitions set in the same in such manner as may be desired. The box or condenser S and cooler box or boxes E need not both be used in one combination, but may be separately applied*the condenser with the drier and the box o r boxes E with the drier-and theA air heated maybe used for other purposes than drying the boneblack, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to 'secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the bone-black coolers C, of a casing ysurrounding the coolers vfor conning a current of air in contact with the coolers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth,
