(ci. 10m-494i i presses proposed of the type referred to and many styles of presses have beenl built and sold commercially in These presses, as is well'y known in the trade, have relatively high pressures set up therein and in generalfthe presses are of a heavy,-massive construction so as to stand the forces exerted thereonand to give effective service life.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved type of a press of the class described characterized by the provision of a plurality of spaced, parallel press frame plates suitably secured together to form a unitary frame structure therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a press frame made from a plurality of rolled plateshaving center apertures cut therefrom and with no metal castings being required in the frame.
Another object of the invention is to tie together a plurality of parallel, spaced frame plates, in a press frame, by a pair of laterally directed plateswelded or otherwise secured to all of the press frame plates at opposite ends of a center opening provided therein. 'i
Yet another object of the inventionis to provide a stronger, but lighter, type of a press frame particularly adapted to have the required strength therein at the load carrying portions thereof.
Yet another obpect of the invention is to provide a beam-type frame from vertical and horizontal plates suitably secured together to form a unitary lframe assembly therefrom.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a press frame particularly adapted to be built up readily from pre-formed rolled metal plates and with the frame members being designed for and secured together in proper relationship for individual press loads and requirements; and to provide special types of adjustable guides in a press frame for both vertical and lateral adjustment therein for engaging movable bolster means positioned by the press.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will be made more apparent as the specication proceeds.
In order to understand the invention more completely, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the multi-frame press embodying the principles of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the press of Fig. 1.
When referring to corresponding parts Shown in the drawings and referred to in the specification, corresponding numerals are used to facilitate comparison therebetween.
Patented Apr. 1960 Generally speaking, the press of the invention comprises a plurality of spaced parallel at frame plates made of rolled steel with each plate having a large center opening therein, tie plates welded to and extending between all of said frame plates `at opposed margins'of the center openings, plate means welded to and extending between the frame plates at opposed ends thereof and lying parallel to the tie plates for reenforcing action, guide means positioned between and extending longitudinally of the frame plates intermediate pairs of the spaced frame 'plates to engage bolster means in the press, and means for adjusting the guide means in the press.
Attention now is particularly directed to the details of the structure shown in the drawings, and a press 1 is indicated in the drawings and comprises a plurality of metal frame plates 2, 2 that extend vertically of the press 1 in parallel, evenly spaced relationship.A These metal frame plates 2 are preferably made from rolled metal sheets, usually steel, and the plates are of generally ing or otherwise cutting portions of the Iframe plates therefrom.
The frame structure for the press 1 is at least partially formedl by a pair of at metaltop and bottom tie plates 4 and 5, respectively, that are positioned at the opposite vertical margins of the center openings 3 in the plates 2. The top tie plate 4 and the bottom tie plate 5 are welded, for example, to each and every one ofthe frame plates 2 for securing them together and effectively transferring load therebetween. The frame structure for th'e press 1 includes a plurality of spacer plates 6-that are positioned intermediate adjacent pairs of the frame plates 2, 2 advjacent the top portion thereof and which spacer plates 6 can be welded ortotherwise suitably secured to the adjacent frame plates for reenforcing the plates and making a unitary structure therefrom. Figs. l and 2 of the drawings both show that axially inner and outer spacer plates aand 6b may be provided in the press l'with such inner spacer plate 6a beinglonger than the outer spacer if desired, only the center portion of the press 1 need be so reenforced, or if desired one thicker plate could be supplied adjacent the center portion of the press and with a thinner plate or plates being used adjacent the lateral press frame plates 2, 2. A tie plate (not shown) might be used at the top edges of the plates 2, if desired.
One or more base plates 7 may be secured to and extend between the frame plates 2 at the base or lower end thereof to further reenforce such frame plates 2 and the beam-like type of a frame structure formed therefrom, and to provide a support for the press. This base plate 7, as shown in Fig. 1, may have three sections 7a, 7b and 7c provided therein with all of such sections being welded or otherwise secured to each one of the frame plates 2 and extending the depth of the press 1 for reenforcing the frame plates. The base plates aid in maintaining the frame plates 2 in lixed parallel, spaced association with each other.
A ram 8 is shown as being removably positioned within the center openings 3 in the frame plates 2 and such ram 8 is received in a suitable ram pot 9 that has conventional hydraulic control means (not shown) connected thereto. Such ram 8 carries a bolster or equivalent platen member 10 at the upper end thereof. The bolster 10, in turn, is adapted to engage and position a plurality of platens 11 which likewise are positioned within the center openings 3 of the frame plates 2 and are movably secured therein by any conventional means. Molds M are received between the platens 11.
VAs another 4feature of the invention, the bolster 10 has pairs of guide blocks 12 secured to opposite lateral or marginal portions thereof 'and which guide blocks are .tadapted to engagewith speciallyj positioned guiderneans provided by the invention. Such guide means 'comprise .anglesl which-extend verticallyA of the press 1 intermediate pairs of the frame plates v it. Theseangles or posi- `tioning means secured thereto have suitable slots (not shown) therein to permit slight adjustment for the-guide angles 13 inwardly or outwardly lateral-ly with relation .to thepress 1 by adjustment of the control means provided therefor. Such slots engage threaded rodsr14 which .extend between adjacent pairs of the plates 2 and are `welded or otherwise suitably secured thereto. These rods 14 position the angles 13 in desired adjustment front to :rear ofthebpress frame 2, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The rods 14 have lock nuts 15 provided thereon rv,for positioning and holding the guide angles 13 in a :fixed position afterrproper adjustment thereof has been made. Adjustment in the position of these guide angles 13.laterally inwardly and outwardly of the frame means is controlled by a pair of adjusting screws 16 that engage each of the, guide angles 13 adjacent opposite ends thereof and which in-turn are positioned by slots 17 provided infguide bars 18 suitably secured toand extending be- .tween pairs of the metal frame plates 2, 2 as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Suitable lock nuts 19 engage with these screws 16 for aiding in retaining them in a given position on the positioning bars 18 so that the ,guide angles 135can be adjusted both laterally in the press 1 as well as from front to rear thereof to compensate for wear in thel guide blocks 12, or similar members that `engage these guide angles to position the bolster 10 ac- `curately in the press 1.

.From the foregoing, it should be observed that a desirable type of a press has been provided by the invention and that such press is made from a plurality of rolled metal plates which have center openings cut or otherwise formed therein and that no cast members need `be used in the press. In addition, the frame of the press 1 is of an open beam type construction which provides VVa maximum of strength with a minimum of weight and with 'a minimum overall size in the press. The frame plates can be varied in thickness and/ or spacing for varying strength requirements. By the open frame structure provided, it is possible to mount guide means in a novel adjustable manner in the press so that an additional novel structure and functioning isprovided in such press. Thus the objects of the invention are achieved.
While one complete embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein, it will be appreciated that modiiication of this particular embodiment of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a press, a plurality of spaced parallel flat frame plates of rolled steel each with a large center opening therein, tie members Welded to and extending between all of said frame plates at opposed margins of said center openings, reenforcing means welded to and extending between said frame plates at one end thereof and lying parallel to said tie members, and reenforcing means welded to and connecting said frame plates at the opposite end thereof, bolster means received in said center openings, vguide angles extending longitudinally of said framerplates intermediate pairs of said frame plates to position said bolster means in the press, rods extending in -the direction of from front to rear of the press between 'pairs of saidframe plates adjacent said center openings thereinmeans securing said guide angles to said rods for adjustment -front to-rear of the press, and means engag- ;ing said Y.guide angles and carried by the same frame yplates at ysaid rods for adjusting said guide angles laterally `of the press.
