3 Claims. (CI. 90-60) This application is a division of my parent U.S. application, Serial No. 448,912, filed August 10, 1954 on Im-. proved Means for Mounting Sine-Bars for Drilling, Milling and Grinding Operations.
The present invention aims to provide a new and improved exceptionally simple and inexpensive, easily operable and reliable clamping means for nonrotatably holding a work piece while work is being performed thereon.
With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the following detailed description, the appended claims and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A horizontally elongated base block 30 is disclosed corresponding generally to the sine-bar block 22 of the above mentioned parent application. shown, however, of somewhat modified construction in that its ends are provided with horizontal attaching flanges 31 and with vertical attaching flanges 32, permitting the use of C-clamps or the like in securing the block to a horizontal or to a vertical support not necessarily forming part of the general combination disclosed in the aforesaid parent application. No claim is herein made to the flanges 31 and 32 in view of another divisional application Serial No. 764,398, filed Sept. 30, 1958 in which they are claimed.
The base block 30 is of horizontally elongated form and is of rectangular cross section. This block has two longitudinal T- slots 33 and 34 which open respectively through the upper side and the front side of said block.
A back-up jaw 39 is mounted on the top surface of the block 30 with its depending positioning rib 40 engaged in the T-slot 33, and said jaw includes a depending side skirt 41 adapted to lie against the front face of the block in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The jaw 39 includes a foot extension 42 through which passes a T-bolt 43 having a head portion 44 mounted in and adjustable along the T-slot 34. The skirt 41 also is secured against the front side face of the block by a screw 45 passing through a bore in the skirt and threaded into a receiving bore in a head 46 mounted in and adjustable along the T-slot 34. The screw 45 turns against a washer 47. The securing devices 43, 44 and 45, 46 serve to secure the back-up jaw 39 at selected positions of adjustment along the block 30. A supplementary securing screw 48 is provided and passes through a bore 49 in the jaw and is threaded into a receiving bore 50 in the block 30. This screw may be employed as a supplementary securing means when the jaw is to be secured in a predetermined fixed position.
This block 30 is' A pressure jaw member 51 also is mounted on the top surface of. the block 30 and has a depending rib 52 engaged in the T-slot 33. The member 51 also has a depending skirt 53 adapted to engage the frontside of the block in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, and a foot extension 54.through which passes a T-bolt 55 having a head 56 mounted in and adjustable along the T-slot 33. v
The skirt 53 also is secured by two screws 57 passing through bores in the skirt and threaded into receiving,
bores in heads 58 mounted in and adjustable along the T-slot 34, said screws turning against washers 59. The securing devices 55-, 56 and 57, 58 serve to secure the presser jaw member 51 at selected positions of adjustment along the block 30. A supplementary securing screw 60 also is provided and passes through a bore 61 provided in the block 30 and into a threaded bore 62 in the jaw member 51. This screw 60 may be used as 'a supplementary securing means when the jaw member 51 is to be secured in a predetermined, fixed position on the sine-bar block.
The jaw member 51 is bifurcated at 63 to provide parallel upstanding pillars 64 and 65, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1. A rectangular socket 66 is formed in the pillar 64 in which to receive the rectangular shank 67 of the pressure plunger 68. A pressure screw 69 is threaded through a bore provided in the pillar 65 and has a square wrench receiving head 70 at one end, and a disk-like head 71 at its other end. The head 71 is equipped with a center stud 72 projecting into a hardened, flat ground thrust plate or ring 73 directly engaging the end of the pressure plunger 67, 68.
It will be apparent by reference to Figure 1, that when the back-up jaw 39 is secured in a selected position of adjustment on the block 30, a work piece W can be placed on the upper surface of the block 30, and by adjusting the pressure jaw member 51 into proper spaced relation to the jaw 39, and adjusting the screw 69, the pressure plunger 68 can be firmly pressed against the work piece to secure the same on the block 30 and against the backup jaw 39.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous construction has been disclosed for attaining the desired end. However, attention is invited to the possibility of making variations within the scope of the invention as claimed.
1 claim:
1. In apparatus of the character described wherein is included a base block, said block including aT-slot openlng through and extending along one upwardly directed face portion thereof, and a T-slot opening through and extending along a laterally directed face portion of said block, and wherein are included work piece holding devices mounted on said upwardly directed face portion and having flange'means depending therefrom and opposing said lateral face portion and the T-slot therein, and T- bolts engaging in the T-slots and adjustably securing the work piece holding devices and said flange means against said upwardly and laterally directed face portions of the block.
2. In apparatus of the character described wherein is included a base block, work piece holding devices mounted on the block, and means adjustably securing the work holding devices on the block so that they can be mounted in selected positions along said block, said work piece holding devices including a back-up jaw and a pressure jaw arranged in spaced relation on the block, said pressure jaw having a rectangular socket therein opening toward the back-up jaw, a pressure plungerhaving a rectangular shank snugly slidable in said socket, and screw means engaging the plunger and operable to move the end of said base block, a pressure jaw mounted upon the other end of said base block and having two upstanding pillars spaced apart longitudinally thereof, the pillar to-' wardtsaid back-up jaw being formed with a poly-sided socket which opens both toward said back-up jaw and toward the other pillar, said other pillar being formed with an opening aligned with said socket, a pressure plunger in opposed relation with said back-up jaw, said pressure plunger having a poly-sided shank slidably re ceived in said poly-sided socket, a plunger operating screw threaded through. the aforesaid opening of said other pillar and having a disk-like head at its inner end disposed between said pillars, and a thrust plate interposed between said head and the outer end of said poly-sided shank, said head being connected with said thrust plate to rotate with respect thereto.
