INVENTOR Boris G. Metoff ATTORNEY States. Patent Application December 9, 1958, Serial No. 779,125
1 Claim. (Cl. 51-34 This invention relates to a sanding tool,'and it concerns more particularly a sanding tool for attachment to a'drill press. a 1
An object of the invention is to provide a power-driven sanding tool for use insmoothing the surfaces of articles formed of wood and like materials.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for a drill press comprising a rotary sanding tool which is attachable to the spindle of the drill press whereby the sanding tool is rotatable about its axis as well as movable reciprocally relative to the work.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in combination with adrill press, a rotary sanding tool comprising a vertically disposed rotatable shaft having its upper end received in the tool holder of the drill press whereby it is removably connected to the spindle thereof 2,930,164 Patented Mar. 29, 1960 a 2 ing a sanding tool embodying the invention incorporated therein; r
Figure 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the lines 2--2 of Figure l; v
Figure 3 is an elevational view on an enlarged scale, partly broken away, of the sandingv tool; and
Figure 4 is a sectional plan view taken on the lines 4-4 of Figure 3'.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates generally a conventional drill press. The drill press 1 has a sanding tool embodying the invention, indicated generally by the numeral'2, incorporated therein.
The drill press 1 has a frame or pedestal including a base portion 3 and an upstanding portion 4. A worksupporting table 5 is adjustably connected to the upstanding portion ,4, above the base portion 3, whereby it may be raised and lowered.
The drill press 1, is driven by a motor 6 through a pulley. wheel 7, a belt 8,and the usual mechanism enclosedwithin a casing 9 supported on the upstanding portion 4 of the frame above the work-supporting table 3 5. A vertically disposed spindle 10 extends below the casing 9 and has a tool holder 11 connected to its lower end.
A lever 12, which is positioned on one side of the casing 9, is attached to the outer end of a shaft 13,
andis driven thereby, as well as movable reciprocally therewith, and a cylindrical elementhaving an abrasive peripheral surface aligned axially with the shaft and rigidly connected to its lower end.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in such an arrangement, means responsive to rotation of the shaft and acting on the lever controlling the reciprocal movement of the drill press spindle whereby the sanding tool is automatically raised and lowered simultane ously with its rotary movement.
Another objectv of the invention is to provide, in the structure described, a gear housing having a bore therein surrounding the shaft and positioned above the cylindrical element, an internal cavity in the housing communicating with one side of the bore, bearings in the bore whereby the housing is journaled on the shaft, thrust bearings on the shaft restraining the housing against longitudinal movement relative to the shaft, a worm gear on the shaft within the bore, a crank having a horizontally disposed shaft journaled in the housing and traversing the internal cavity therein, a pinion gear in the cavity meshing with the worm gear on the first mentioned shaft, the pinion gear being mounted on the crank shaft and rotatable therewith, one end of the crank shaft extending outwardly of the housing and having a crank arm connected thereto, the crank arm being positioned at right angles to the crank shaft and being movable pivotally in the vertical plane, an eye bolt inserted through a transverse opening in the crank arm whereby it is pivotally connected to the crank arm in spaced, parallel relation to the crank shaft, flexible means connecting the eye of the bolt to one end of the lever controlling the reciprocal movement of the drill press spindle, and a horizontally disposed rod rigidly connected at one end to the housing and bearing against an upstanding portion of the drill press frame to restrain the housing against rotation with the drill press spindle.
The invention will be readily understood by referring to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a drill press havwhich actuates means enclosed withinthe casing 9 for controlling the reciprocal movement of the spindle 10. The lever 12 is spring biased, by means not shown, so that in operation one end of the lever 12 is pulled downwardly from its uppermost position, to lower the spindle 10, against the resistance of the spring, and is returned to its uppermost position, when released, by the action of the spring.
The sanding tool 2 includes a vertically disposed rotatable shaft 14, the upper end of which is received in the tool holder 11 of the drill press 1 whereby it is removably connected to the spindle 10 thereof and is driven thereby, as well as movable reciprocally therewith. A cylindrical element 15, as hereinafter described, which has an abrasive peripheral surface, is aligned axially with the shaft 14 and rigidly connected to its lower end.
The cylindrical element 15 comprises a solid body of resilient material having a central bore 16 surrounding the lower end of the shaft 14. The shaft 14 hasa downwardly facing shoulder 17 above the cylindrical element 15, and a nut 18 is threaded on the shaft 14 below the cylindrical element 15. A pair of metal washers 19 are positioned between the ends of the cylindrical element 15 and the shoulder 17 and the nut 18, respectively.
A sleeve 20, which advantageously may be formed of paper or fabric, and which has an abrasive peripheral surface consisting of sand or the like embedded in an adhesive coating, surrounds the cylindrical element 15. The sleeve 20 is stretched tightly over the cylindrical element 15, and advantageously may be secured thereto by friction, the cylindrical element 15 being expanded somewhat upon tightening the nut 18.
A gear housing 21 has a bore 22 therein surrounding the shaft 14 and positioned above the cylindrical element 15. An internal cavity 23 in the housing 21 communicates with one side of the bore 22. A pair of bearings 24 in the bore 22 surround the shaft 14 whereby the housing 21 is journaled on the shaft 14. A pair of thrust bearings 25 on the shaft 14 restrain the housing 21 against longitudinal movement relative to the shaft 14. A pair of split rings 26, which surround the shaft 14, are re ceived in annular grooves provided therefor in the shaft 14, above and below the thrust bearings 25, respectively, whereby the housing 21 is removably secured to the shaft 14 in spaced relation to the ends thereof.
A worm gear 27 is formed on the shaft 14 within the I bore 22. A crank 2 3 has a horizontally disposed shaft 2. iou nal in the h 21 nd r rs ng, he. nt nal cavity 23. A pinion gear 30 in the cavity 23 meshes with the worm gear 27 on the shaft 14. The pinion sear 3 s m un d n the s a t 2 and rat tahle therewith. One end of the crank shaft 29 extends-ontwardly of the housing 21;;and has a cranktarrn lyl, connected thereto. The crank arm 31 is positionedat rightangles to the crank shaft 29,, and is movable pivgtally in the vertical plane.
An eye bolt 32 is inserted through a transverseopening in the crank arm 31 whereby it is pivotally' connected to the crank arm 31 in spaced, parallel relation to the crank shaft 29. A chain 33 connects the eye of the bolt 32 to one end of the lever 12, which gontrols the reciprocal movement of the drill press spindle as algove described. a
A horizontally disposed rod, 34 is rigidly connected at one end to the housing 21, and bears against the upstanding portion 4 of the drill press frame to restrain the housing 21 against rotation with the drill press spindle 10.
In Figures 1 and 2 the work, which may consist of a piece of lumber or the like, is indicated by dotted lines.
The invention may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, w
