COMBINED DUST EXGLUDER AND WINDOW FASTENER. N0. 292.839.
Patented Feb. 5, 1884.
Lilhngnphar. Wanhingim n cy UNITED STATES PATENT ,OFFICE.
FREDERIO H. MOORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED DUST-EXCLUDER AND W lNDOW-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,839, dated February 5, 1884.
I Application filed October 6, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIO H. MOORE, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas-- sachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Dust-Excluders and Window-Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
pieces of metal, wood, or other suitable mate; rial hinged and attached to the top of the meeting-rail of lower or inner sash of the window in such a manner thatthe loose fold or flap may fall down and cover the joint between the meeting-rails and a portion of the meetingrail of the upper or outer'sash of the window, and by means of suitable fastenings, staples,
or hooks, 8m, can be securely locked, and also easily turned up to allow the sashes to pass each other in opening the window.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my invention as applied to the ineetingrails of the upper and lower sashes of a window. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec-.
tion through the meeting-rails with the-flap closed. Fig. 3 is a similar section, showing the flap as open. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the flap being of metal and differently hinged. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the same.
A A represent the window-frame, and B B and E the side and center bars of the upper or inner sash in section. 0 G are theglass panes. D is the meeting-rai1 of the lower or inner sash, and D the meeting-rail of the upper or outer sash.
In Fig. 1, G represents a thin narrow strip of wood or other suitable material secured to the top of the meeting-rail of the lower or inside sash, D. To the strip G is attached, by means of hinges H, a similar, but somewhat wider, strip, F, forming a flap which covers the joint between the two meeting-rails, and when the said flap is opened, as shown in Fig. 3, it is thrown back sufficiently far to allow the meeting-rails of the sashes to pass each other.
I I are flat hooks, which are pivoted to the stationary strip G and catch in pins on the flap F, thus securely fastening the flap over the joint, drawing the two sashes together, and at the same time forming a secure fastening to the window and preventing any tampering with the fastenings from the outside. When the strips are made of metal, the inner edges of each are turned to form hinges, and connected together, as shown in Figs. 4. and 5.
The under side of the flap may have a lining of cloth, rubber, or other suitable material, if desirable.
I do not confine myself to the use of either metal or wood alone, as the protector may be made of a combination of both.
Iain aware that a sliding'plate has been arranged on the upper edge of the lower sash, and also that guard-strips have been used on window-sashes and window-screen's. These I do not claim; but
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination of the strip G, secured to the top of the meeting-rail of the lower sash, D, of a window, with the hinged flap F, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the meeting-rails D D in a windowsash, of a hinged cover, F, and hooks I I, the latter pivoted to the strip G, and engaging with pins on the hinged flap F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 85 to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
FREDERIO H. MOORE.
