The frame A is held together by the usual bindingrods, A. (Shown in Fig. 9.) v
B represents the bed, upon which the stuff to be planed is placed. The back plate, B', is made adjustable vertically by means of the usual set-screws or bolts, so as to regulate the depth of the cut. ,Y
G represents the grooved feed-rollers fastened to the shafts G C2, which shafts workin boxes D, D, D2, and D3. The boxes are held down with sufficient force by the weighted levers E E E2 E3, which are jointed by pins or bolts g to the arms g, the weightsF beingarranged so they can be moved along said levers, so that the pressure of the feed-rollers C may be adjusted. Each lever E E E2 is provided down.
Fig. et is avperspective` down, said `rods being jointed or connected in the usual way to said levers, so as to be adjustable lengthwise. They are arranged so as to pass up above the top of the machine, and terminate in a curved portion, f, adapted to rest upon the top of the-boxes andpress them (See Figs. l, 8, and 9.) The lever E3, the end of which is shown in Fig. 8, is jointed machine by a vpin or bolt, g', and is otherwise constructed like the levers E, E', or E2. It is also jointed in the usual way by a pin or bolt to the lower end at e' of the vertical bar G,

(see Fig. 5,) which bar Gr is connected to or forms a part of the box D2, and is adapted to move up or down with it.' The bar G is kept in place and in line at the top by the box D2, which is provided with atongue or rib, a, at each end and iitted into corresponding grooves in thev frame, so as to be held securely in line and be capable of a free movementnp or down. (See Figs. 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7.) The lower end is kept in place by a cap, e, bolted to the frame, so that the bar G shall have a vertical movement up ordown. (See Figs. 2 and 5.)
The object in holding the -box D2 and its vertical bar or brace G securely in line while it has afree up-and-down movement is that it allows all the necessary movements to the box,
and carries one end of the feed-roller shaft C',
and also thefeed-rollers, driving-pulleys, and c i gearing, or all the gearing necessary for giving the required movements to the feed-rollers at the back end of the machine.
v To allow the feed-roller shaft Gto oscillate at the back end of the machine as the box D2 Vmoves up or-down,A it is tted into the rocking box d, arranged in the box D2.. (See Figs. 6 and 7.) The said box d is provided with iiat sides h 7i, 'which prevent it from turning in the opening d in the box D2. (Shown in section, Fig. 7 and by the dotted lines in Fig. 6.) The other parts of Vits surface being rounded,
as shown, it is'free to rock or oscillate in the IOO (shown in Figs. 1,"2, and 9.) The holds or carries the large gear-wheel J and pinion J, and the shaft I2 carries the drivingpulley K, loose pulley K, and the pinion L. By this construction the gearing all moves freely without any danger of binding. The face of the gear-wheel l being made narrow, allows the necessary oscillation of the shaft C without causing its teeth to bind in the teeth of the pinion J. rllhe pulley K is shown in Figs. 1, 8, Vand 9, and the pulley K and gearwheel J are shown in Figs. l and 9, and are also indicated by the dotted lines J and K in Fig. 2. The front boxes, D D', which carry the feed-roller shafts C C", are provided with trunnions b b', which iit in vertical grooves in the openings in the upper part of the frame. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) By this arrangement the boxes can move up or down, or oscillate at either side, or either box can oscillate independent of the other. rllhe two boxes arc kept together by a pin or trunnion, c, on the box D, which fits into a corresponding recess in the box D', (see Fig. 3,) so that either may turn von the trunnion without turning the other, or both may turn together. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) The feeding-roller shafts C C2 are geared together by the pinions c c'Z and the intermediate connecting-pinion, c, (see Figs. l, 8. and 9,) so that a rotating movement given to the shaft C will be transmitted to the shaft C2, causing it to turn in the same direction, and without in any way causing the gearing to bind, so that they will at all times move easily without being interfered with by the vertical or other movements of the boxes D D; and the construction is such that the pressure of the feed-rollers will not be alfected in any way by the power required to drive them and their connecting-gear, thereby leaving the pressing action of the feed-rollers free to be acted on only by the weights, so that the feeding power is at all times the same.
M represents the driving-pulley for thc cutters or planing-knives, which being made in the usual way and well known, will require no further description here.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The usual high speed is given to the cutters by a belt on the pulley M, operated in any well-known way, and the feed-rollers C receive their rotary feeding movement by a belt on the pulley K, which transmits its motion from its pinion L to the large gear-wheel J, and from that by its pinion J to the gearwheel I on the shaft G, thereby operating it and its feed-rollers. The shaft CAl and its feed-rollers receive the required movement from the shaft G, and the pinion c', fastened to its opposite end, which transmits its motion to the intermediate pinion, c, and from that to the pinion c`z on the shaft C, thereby giving to said shaft and its feeding-rollers theproper feeding movement. The stuff to be planed is passed in over the table B, under the feed-rollers C, in the direction ofthe arrow. The back end of the shaft C2 is sctinabearing or box, Diwhich is also provided with trunnions similar to the boxes D or D', or it may have a rocking box, d, similar to that in the box D2, so as to allow the necessary oscillating movement to the box as it rises and falls.
An equivalent device for the trunnions b or b would be a tongue or rib, a, similar to that shown in Figs. 6 and 7 but having its sides rounded or convex, so that its upper and lower ends would be sufficiently narrowto allow the necessary oscillating or rocking movement to the boxes.
)Ve claim as our invention- 1. The weighted box D1", rigidly fastened to or forming a part of a vertical bar, G, and arranged to slide in grooves in the frame of the machine. the bar G being secured in a box near the bottom, and provided with the gearing I J J lL K K, for operating the feeding mechanism, in combination with the shaft C, its feeding-rollers, rocking box d, and the weighted box D7 for supporting the opposite end of the shaft C', and its connecting -gcaring for operating the shaft C2 and its feeding-rollers.
2. The feeding-roller shaft C, its operating mechanism, and weighted movable box D, in combination with the connected movable boxes D D', having an independent oscillating movement one way and a connected movement the other way, substantially as specified, and the pinions c, c, and c'l, for giving the necessary feeding movement to the shafts C' Cz and their feeding-rollers without interfering with the upward or downward movements of the said pressure and feeding rollers by reason of the action of the gear-wheels upon each other, substantially as described.
