SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ',Patent No. 292,79*?, dated February 5,1884.
rThis invention relates to furniture-casters of that class in which the housing is arranged to oscillate with reference to the furniture to which the caster may be attached, as wellas to swivel around a vertical pivot. y
The nature of the invention will beunderstood from the following description' and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a caster embodyiug my improvements; Fig. 2, a vertical section, viewed from the side; Fig. 3, a rear view; Fig. 4, a front View, and Fig. 5 a perspective view with the door-wheels omitted.
In the drawings, A represents a fiange to attach to furniture; B, a central top boss on this stem; '0, a central under boss on the stem;
D, the wheel-housing; E, the two floor-wheels;-
F, a curtain forward of the wheels, pendent from the roof of the housing; G, asimilar curtain nearer the axis of the door-wheels; H, a block fitting between the curtains at their lower ends; I, a pin or rivet passing through the block and through the bosses B C and securing the block to the flange-piece; J, a journal of the front of the block, tting a bearing-hole in the foot of the front curtain; K, a journal on the rear of the block, fitting a halfbearing in the rear curtain, G, and prolonged to the rear to pass over the wheelaxle between the inner hubs of the wheels; L, the wheelaxle, and lVI a slot in the roof of the housing for the admisson and free movement of the boss C.
`The pin I forms the axis of the housing as it swivels upon the furniture. The pin may be tted loosely in the block or in the bosses, or in both; or it may be prolonged above into an attaching-screw to engage the furniture. The flange'A and boss B form simply a means for connecting the pin I with the furniture, and I contemplate the substitution of other suitable usual means. The foot of boss C bears upon the top of the block. The block, with its two journals tting the curtains, permits the housing to oscillate with reference to the pin and the furniture to which the pin is attached, whereby the two wheels are en-` abled to secure an equable bearing upon the iioor.
The half-bearing at the footof curtain G saves drilling and permits the ready insertion of the block with its journals. The prolongation of the journal K over the wheel-axle serves to give a central support to the axle, thus avoiding a central housing-hanger. The location of the axis of the oscillating movement low down near the axis of the wheels permits the proper oscillation of thehousing without danger of cramping.
Instead of the block being provided with journals formed upon it and tted with aseparable vertical pin, as shown, the vertical pin may be formed with the b loclr and the journals of oscillation secured by an inserted rivet or pin, 'and the block, instead of bearing directly against the boss C to receive the weight of the furniture, may support the weight by means of its vertical stem having a thrustbearing up in a socket in the furniture, as is common in swiveling casters.
I claimas my inventionl. The housing D, having'the two curtains pendent from its roof, and the vertical pin I, provided with means for connection to furniture, and joined to the foot of the curtains by a horizontal axle of oscillation, combined sub- 'j stantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The housing D, having curtain F and curtain G, with a half-bearing, the block H, with its journals, and the pin I, combined substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The housing D, with its curtains F G and slot M, the block H, with its journals, the pin I, provided with means for attachment to furniture, and the boss C, resting on the block, combined substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. rIhe housing D, the wheel-axle L, the two wheels E, the pin I, provided with means for H, having journals J and K, and the rivetedpin I,combined substantially as and for the purpose specified.
AUGUST EBERLE.
