Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASPLAN BELDAM, OF LONDON, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
PACKING FOR STUFFlNG-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,783, dated February 5, 15.84.
Application filed September 13, 1883.
dated May 29, 1876,) of which the following is a specification. V
The object of my invention is to make a metallic packing that will resist high-pressure steam, and that will reduce friction to a minimum; and to this end I make use of a novel combination of canvas, felt, or other fibrous material with corrugated, plaited, or folded sheets of metal rolled up together in a circular or other suitable form, and interlayered with lubricating-grease,which combination is effected in the manner hereinafter described, the mode of construction being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, showing the com-- pound fabric of metal and canvas before the same is rolled up, andwhereinA is a layer of felt, canvas, or other fibrous material. B is a layer of thin sheet metal, corrugated, plaited, or folded, as shown by the lines 0 O. F F are arrows showing the direction in which the fabric is rolled up in a lateral direction across the plaits or folds.
Figs. 2. 3, 4, and 5 are sections of the packing, showing various-shapes inwhich the same may be made up.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
To construct this packing, Itake athin sheet, B, of white or other suitable metal, corrugated, plaited, or folded, as shown by the lines 0 C, on which I spread a suitable lubricatinggrease, and I then cover it with a layer of canvas, felt, or othersuitable fibrous material, A, on
(No model.) Patented in England May 29, 1876, No.2,254.
which again I spread a layer of lubricatinggrease. I then roll up the whole in a lateral inanner across the corrugations or plaits of the metal in the direction shown by the arrows F F until thepacking attains the desired thickk ness, the outside layer being always the canvas, felt, or other fibrous material, the packing being thus composed of successive layers of canvas or felt, lubricating-grease, and corrugated or plaited metal.
The packing can be made of round, square, triangular, or other section, as shown in Figs.
. 2, 3, 4, and 5. The corrugation or plaiting of the metal allows the packing to be bent into any sized circle or other form without fracture.
By the mode of construction above described, it will be seen that each layer of metal forms a complete protection to the elastic fibrous Web of canvas or felt, thereby preventing wear and depreciation, and effectually resisting the action of high-pressure steam, while at the same time friction is reduced to a minimum. The packing being elastic, is adapted to any diameter of gland, and can be bent into any form without fracture.
Having now described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a packing for stuffing-boxes of steam engines and pumps, andfor other joints'required to be made steam, air, or water tight, the'combination of athiu sheet of corrugated,
plaited, or folded metal with a layer of can vas, felt, or other fibrous material and interlayered with lubricating-grease, the whole being rolled up in a lateral direction across the corrugations or plaits until the packing attains the requisite thickness, substantially as herein set forth. 7 V
