Claims. (Cl. 166-173) The present invention isrdirected to a wall scratching device. More particularly, it is directed to a wall scratcher which is readily attached to a well casing. In its more specic aspects, the invention is directed to a combination of a wall scratcher and a clamping means for attaching the wall scratcher to the well casing.
The present invention may be briefly described as i11- cluding an elongated base member provided with spaced apart spring members projecting from the base member for engagement with the wallA of a well in which a'well casing towhich the base member is attached is disposed. A clamping means, which may be hinged, embracingly engages the base member and the casing and serves to attach the base member to the casing. The clamping means is provided with locking means for iocking the clamping means into frictional .engagement with the casing whereby the base member and the spring member rotate with the casing.
The clamping means or collar may be provided with various types of locking means which may include yonev or more pipe slip jaws, pipe dogs, rotatable members, such as rollers and spherical members, or the locking means may comprise a tapered pin: arranged in loops on the ends of the clamping means. means may comprise .a cam member on one end of the clamping means insertable in an opening in the other end of the clamping means which provides a cam sur# face for locking the clamping means into frictional engagement with the casing.
The clamping means maybe interconnected with the basermernber by a pin member or it may be interconnected by providing the base member with an indented surface and providing the clamping member with a protrusion which matingly engages with the indented surrfaces. The clamping means and the base member may be interconnected by providing a lateral passagewaythrough the base member and arranging the clamping means in the lateral passageway.
A plurality of clamping members, such as two or three Suitably, `the locking or more may be employed for each base member to hold same for rotation with the casing. The clamping members are suitably spaced apart. Forexample, the base members may have a length of about 5 feet and two or three of the clamping members may be employed to lock and clamp same on a casing. ln short, the clamping means may be a distance within the range of about 2te 5 feet apart. The clamping means may suitably be constructed of Y 'expansible spring metal which allows it to be expanded so that it may slip over the spring members or suitably the-clamping means may be providedV with a hinge and with a latchable member for arranging the clamping member on the casing and around the base member.

Referring now to the drawing Y in which identicaly numerals will be employed to designate identicalparts,
and particularly to Figs'l 1 to 4, numeral 11 designatesa f well casinghaving a plurality of base members 12 attachedthereto by collars 13. The base members 12 are provided with a plurality of spring members 14 which may be spring members, such as'described in ULS. Patent 2,421,434, issued to Carl E. Reistle et al., or they may f be spring members, such as described at page 383 of the Composite Catalog of Oil Field and Pipe Line Equipment, 21st Edition, 1955-56. For example, the base member 12 maybe approximately 5 feet long and may have anywhere from 20 to 40 of the spring members 14 attached thereto.

By rotating the collar 25 with respect to the outer surface of the casing 11,V the roller 26 serves to wedge the collar 25 against the casing 11 and, therefore, hold the base member 12 tightly against the casing 11.
Fig. 7 is similar to Fig. 5 excepting that ball bearings 30 of increasing diameter are provided in a raceway 31 between the inner surface of the collar 25 and the outer periphery of the casing 11. A spring 32 is provided to bias the ball bearings 3d against the casing 11 and collar 25. By rotating the casing 11 to the right the ball bearings are wedged firmly against the casing to hold the base member 12 tightly therein.
Referring to Fig. 8, a modified collar 35 is arranged to embrace the base member 12 and interconnect same by pin 19 in opening 2f). In this modification, collar 35 is provided with a plurality of recesses 36 in each of which is arranged a pivoted dog 37, the dogs 37 being connected to the collar 35 by pivot pins 38, the collars being biased into engagement with the surface of the casing 11 by biasing means or springs 39. If the collar 35 is rotated counterclockwise with respect to the casing 11, the serrations or teeth 49 on the dogs 37 bite into the outer periphery of casing 11 and hold the collar 35 and the base member 12 tightly thereagainst.
Referring now to Figs. 9 and 10, the casing 11 has a collar arranged thereon and interconnected by pin 19 in opening 2@ to the base member 12. In this particular embodiment the collar 45 has a wedge-shaped inner surface 46 which matingly engages with a Wedge-shaped outer surface 47 of at least one slip jaw 48 which is provided with serrations or pipe engaging surfaces 49 to bite against or engage with the outer periphery of the casing 11. It is to be noted that the slip jaws 48 have an outer shoulder 48a against which the collar 45 may rest.
By cooperation of the wedge surfaces 46 and 47, the collar 45 may be tightly held against the outer surface of the casing 11 and thereby hold the base member 12 against the casing 11.
Referring now to Fig. 11, which is a modification of Figs. 1 to 4, the collar 13 is arranged in lateral openings 50 of the modified base member 51, as shown more clearly in Fig. 16. Otherwise, the base member 51 is identical to the base member 12 of the Several other figures. Likewise, the slip jaws 22 are identical to the slip jaws 22 of Figs. 2 and 3. In this modification of the device of the present invention as shown in Fig. 11, the collar 13 is suitably interconnected with the modified base member 51 by means of an indented surface 52 and a protrusion 53 on the collar 13.
The interconnection means embodying the indented surfaces 52 and 53 are shown more clearly in Fig. 12 wherein a modified locking means is provided.
In Figs. 12 and 13 a clamping means or collar 54 s arranged in the lateral passageway 50 of the base member 51 and the ends of the clamping collar 54 are provided with loops 55 and 56 through which a tapered pin member 57 is suitably driven. By virtue of the taper of pin member 57 the clamping means 54 is drawn into tension and securely locked on the casing 11.
In the embodiments of Figs. 1l to 13, the base member 51 is provided with a base portion 51a in which is provided the indented surface 52 which suitably may be an opening and into which the protrusion 53 matingly engages.
Referring now to Figs. 14 and 15, it will be seen that a collar, such as 60, which may or may not be provided with locking members, such as shown in Figs. 1 to 11, inclusive, is provided on one end 61 with an opening 62 defining a cam surface 64. The other end 65 of the clamp collar has attached thereto a cam member 66 which is arranged in the opening 62. The cam member 66 has a cam surface 67 which engages with the cam surface 64. By inserting a suitable wrench member, not shown, in the opening 68 of the cam member 66 and rotating the cam member 66 clockwise, the cam surface 67 is brought into engagement with the cam surface 64 which causes the end 61 to move toward the end 65 and exerts tension on the clamp means 60 and locks same on the outer periphery of the casing 11.
The present invention is quite advantageous and useful in that the conventional method of installing wall scratchers on rotating casing is by welding. Welding of wall scratchers, especially in field installations where alloy steel casing Vis employed and if the casing is not properly preheated prior to welding, causes cracks to develop in the weld which in turn causes the establishment of weak spots in the casing. Furthermore, when the wall scratchers are installed on the casing while the casing is on the pipe rack prior to moving the casing to the derrick iioor, the scratchers are frequently damaged as they are pulled from the rack into the derrick. The present invention eliminates the disadvantages of the prior art in that a latch-on collar which may be hinged is provided. All that is necessary is to arrange the base members carrying the scratchers on the casing at the desired points which may be around the periphery of the casing with one base member being from the other base member or from the other base member and then clamp the base member to the casing employing the device of the present invention. This may be accomplished as the casing is being lowered through the rotary table. However, it is within the purview of the present invention to install the wall scratchers while the casing is in the pipe rack as desired.
From the several embodiments of the present invention, modifications of collars or clamping means which are suitable in the practice of the present invention are shown; these several modifications are given by way of illustration and not by way of limitation.
The nature and objects of the present invention having been completely described and illustrated, what we wish to claim as new and useful and to secure by Letters Patent are:

For use on a cylindrical, rotatable well casing, the combination comprising: an elongated base member; spaced apart spring members projecting from said base member for engagement with the wall of a Well within which said casing is to be disposed; hinged clamping means embracingly engaging said base member and said casing, and attaching said base member to said casing, said hinged clamping means having at least one recess formed therein; and locking means disposed in said at least one recess between said hinged clamping means and said casing, operatively connected to said hinged clamping means and wedgeable between said hinged clamping means and said casing; said locking means having serrated teeth adapted to penetrate said casing when said casing is rotated in a given direction and when said hinged clamping means and said spring members encounter opposition to rotation with said hinged clamping means, to positively connect together said hinged clamping means and said casing for the purpose of preventing relative motion between said hinged clamping means and said casing.

For use on a cylindrical, rotatable well casing, the combination comprising: an elongated base member; spaced apart spring members projecting from said base member for engagement with the wall of a well within which said casing is to be disposed; hinged clamping means embracingly engaging said base member and said casing, and attaching said base member to said casing, said hinged clamping means having at least one recess formed therein; locking means disposed in said at least one recess between said hinged clamping means and said casing, operatively connected to said hinged clamping means and wedgeable between said hinged clamping means and said casing; said locking means including a plurality of pipe dogs pivotally connected to said hinged clamping means in said at least one recess, said pipe dogs having serrated teeth adapted to penetrate said casing when said casing is rotated in a given direction and when said hinged clamping means and said spring members encounter opposition to rotation with said hinged clamping means, to positively connect together'said hinged clamping means and said casing for the purpose of preventing relative motion between said hinged clamping means and said casing.

For use on a cylindrical, rotatable well casing, the combination comprising: an elongated base member; spaced apart spring membres projecting from said base member for engagement with the wall of a Well within which said casing is to be disposed; hinged clamping means embracingly engaging said base member and said casing, and attaching said base member to said casing, said hinged clamping means having at least one recess formed therein; ange means on said hinged clamping means at said at least one recess; locking means disposed between said hinged clamping means and said casing in said at least one recess, slidably connected to said flange means so as to be slidable to a position where it is wedgeable between said hinged clamping means and said casing; said locking means comprising at least one slip jaw having serrated teeth adapted to penetrate said casing when said casing is rotated in a given direction and when said hinged clamping means and said spring members encounter opposition to rotation with said hinged clamping atively connected to said hinged clamping" means and wedgeable between said hinged clamping means and saidv casing; said locking means having serrated teeth adapted to penetrate said casing when said casing is rotated in a given direction and when said hinged clamping means and said spring members encounter opposition to rotation with said hinged clamping means, to positivelyv connect together said hinged clamping means and said` casing for the purpose of preventing relative motion between said hinged clamping means and said casing.

For use on a cylindrical, yrotatable well casing, the combination comprising: an elongated base member having a lateral passageway therethrough; spaced apart spring members projecting from said base member for engaging with the wall of a well within which said casing is to be disposed; hinged clamping means in said lateral passageway, said hinged clamping means ernbracingly engaging said base member and said casing. and attaching said base member to said casing; said hinged clamping means having at least one recess formed therein; locking means disposed in said at least one recess between said hinged clamping means and said casing, operand attaching said base member to said casing, said hinged clamping means further having at least one recess formed therein; locking means disposed in said at least one recess between said hinged clamping means and said casing, operatively connected to saidvhinged clamping means and wedgeable between said clamping means and said casing; said locking means having serrated teeth adapted to penetrate said casing when said casing is rotated in a given direction and when said hinged clamping means and said spring members encounter opposition to rotation with said hinged clamping means, to positively connect together said hinged clamping means and said casing for the purpose of preventing relative motion between saidV hinged clamping means and said casing.
