Description

Feb. 9, 1960 l. o. CARTER 2,923,959
NURSERY CHAIR Filed May 17, 1957 INVEN TOR. /UL/7 0. (45761? 2,923,950 NURSERY (IHATR tale 0. Carter, Dayton, Ohio Application May 17, 1957, Seriai No. 659,819 1 Ciaim. (Cl. 4-135) This invention relates to a portable nursery chair and more particularly to a nursery chair that may be folded so as to simulate a case adapted for use in a motor vehicle, although not necessarily so limited.
An object of this invention is to provide a portable nursery chair provided with a pan and a cover for the pan for sealing the pan when not in use, the nursery chair being foldable so as to simulate a case having surplus room adapted for use in carrying clothing and other necessities for a childs use.
Other objects and advantages reside in the construction of parts, the combination thereof, the method of manufacture and the mode of operation, as will become more apparent from the following description.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the portable chair that has been folded so as to simulate a travel case.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, cross sectional view of a cover for a pan.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View, on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 shows the chair ready for use.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character indicates a case that is provided with a square or a rectangular box-like base portion 12 and a square or rectangular box-like cover portion 1.4 hinged together at 16 along one edge, which edge will be referred to as the rear of the case. The base 12 is provided with a top or partition 18 having a circular opening for a pan 20, as clearly shown in Figure 3, the pan having an outwardly directed flange 22 overlapping and resting on the margins of the opening in the top or partition 18. The circular opening in the partition 18 is provided with a substantially rectangular recess 24 in the margin, providing an opening for the handle 26 of the pan 20. This permits removal of the pan from the compartment 21 in the base 12. A plurality of screws 28 are used in securing the partition 18 to brackets 30 Within the periphery of the base 12.
The top portion or box-like cover portion 14 of the taken substantially case includes a compartment which is bounded by r a pair of partition members 42. A pair of cavities 44, one on either side, are formed between the partition members 42 and the end walls 46 of the box-like cover or top portion 14. A pair of arms 50 are pivotally mounted between the end walls 46 and the partition members 42 by means of hinge pins 52, only one of which is shown in Figure 3. The forward ends of the arms 50 are connected by hinges 54 to vertical standards 56 pivotally attached at 58 to the partition 18. These arms 50 and the standards 56 cooperate with the hinges 54 and 58 and the hinge pins 52 to fold the arms 50 a ainst the top 18 and into the cavities 44 when the cover 14 is closed upon the base 12.
A lid 60 is pivotally attached at 62 to a cross bar 64, the cross bar 64 being attached to the partition members 42. The upper edge of the lid 60, as clearly shown in Figure 4, is provided with a latch mechanism 70, one part of which is carried by a cross bar 74 extending between the partition members 42. The lid 60, cooperating with the cover 14 and the partition members 42, form the compartment 40 where diapers and other childs clothing may be stored.
Fatented Feb. Q, 1960 The front or under side of the lid has secured thereto an elastomeric gasket or sealing member provided with a rib portion 82 snugly fitting within the upper and inner margin of the pan 20. An outwardly directed flange portion 84 of the elastomeric gasket or sealing member 80 forms a gasket ring clamped between the lid 60 and the flange 22 of the pan 20, so that when the cover 14 is closed, the pan 20 is sealed.
In order to facilitate carrying of the portable chair, it is provided with hasps used in holding the cover portion 14 in closed position. A carrying handle 92 is attached to the top or cover 14, for use in carrying the case. Each of the corners may be protected by a leather or a plastic member 94. These covers protect the corners of the case and, at the same time, conceal the sharp corners.
it can readily be seen that this portable nursery chair is convenient to use while traveling by automobile or otherwise. It may be carried as a traveling case and when needed it is merely necessary to open the cover 14, use the case as a nursery chair and then close the cover, sealing the pan. The compartment in the cover portion lends itself for carrying childs wearables, so that they are available in case of an emergency. The portable nursery chair when closed presents a neat appearance simulating an overnight case, so that it may be handled without embarrassment.
Although the preferred embodiment of the device has been described, it will be understood that within the purview of this invention various changes may be made in the form, details, proportion and arrangement of parts, the combination thereof and mode of operation, which generally stated consist in a device capable of carrying out the objects set forth, as disclosed and defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
A portable nursery chair comprising: a case divided into a box-like base portion and box-like cover portion; hinge means connecting said base and cover portions along a common edge thereof; said base portion having a cavity, the top of the box-like base portion having an opening communicating with the cavity; a removable pan mounted in the cavity, said pan having a laterally projecting peripheral flange overlapping the margins of the opening; said cover portion being provided with a storage compartment having a Width less than the cover portion to provide channels between the storage compartment and the sides of the cover portion, foldable arms being provided which extend along the sides of the opening in the top of the box-like base portion, said arms folding into the channels when the cover portion is closed; a duo-functional lid provided on the bottom of said cover portion, said lid closing the storage compartment and closing the opening in the box-like base portion; an elastomeric member attached to the under side of the lid, said elastomeric member having an annular flange projecting into the pan engaging the inner surface of the top edge of the pan for sealing the pan when the box-like cover portion is closed against the box-like base portion; and latch means in said lid for releasably connecting said lid to the storage compartment, whereby said lid and the attached elastomeric member is removed from engagement with the pan when the box-like cover portion is raised.
