Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. EIOHMOND, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, MICHIGAN.
CLOTH ES -REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,359, dated January 22, 1884.
Application filed August 8, 1883. (E0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RIoI-I- MOND, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Isabella and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olothes-Drying Reels; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification. I
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements-in the construction of that class of clothes-drying reels in which the parts are so arranged that the weight imposed upon the reel is supported by the lower hub by means of braces, one of which is provided for each of the folding arms and pivotally secured thereto, while the opposite ends of said braces are pivotally secured to the lower hub.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of parts and their combinations, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, my invention is shown in perspective, and in dotted lines the arms are shown folded.
' A represents the standard or post, provided with a shoulder, upon which rests the hub B, which is simply a short cylinder provided 'with four sets of cars, between which are pivoted the lower ends of the braces O.
D is a metallic sleeve, and its upper end is provided with an upwardly-turning flange, o. This sleeve is also sleeved upon the: post and provided with a set-screw, d, by means of g which it is secured at any desired point.
E is a hub, similar to the hub B, except that its boreis larger to enable it to be sleeved upon the sleeve D. This hub is also provided with ears in pairs, between which the arms F are pivotally secured, and to these arms are secured lines or cords G in any of the desired ways. It will be noticed that the hub E has a vertical play upon the sleeve D, between the set-screw cl and the flange c. This play, when weight is superimposed upon the outer ends of the arms, compels the hub to ride upwardly forming the fulcrum and relieving the strain. at that point.
Underthe action ofthe wind, or ofthe hand, when desired, this reel will rotate with the lower hub upon the post itself, and the upper sleeve upon the post being adjusted at will and secured by the set-screw.
loosened from its engagement with the post, when the weight of the upper hub will cause it and the sleeve upon which it rotates to settle upon the top of the lower hub, allowing the arms to fold upwardly around the post in a compact manner, where they may be secured against accident by a wire or cord tied around them, the post in this instance forming a sup port, against which they rest and to which they are secured.
-It will be seen that by means of thesleeve D and its set-screw the position of the end of the arms F can be readily changed and held fast in the changed position, so that the outer cords can be adjusted at any desired height.
It will also be'observed that the braces G are pivoted to the arms outside of the center of their length, by which means the arms are better supported and are less liable to be broken by the weight of the clothes than they are when the braces are pivoted nearest the inner ends of the arms.
I am aware of. Patents Nos. 46,452 and 140,193, and make no claim to anything shown therein.
What I claim as my invention is In a clothes-drying reel, the combination of the post A, provided with a shoulder, the hubs B E, provided with ears, braces O, sleeve D, provided with set-screw d, and the flange c, and arms F, the parts being constructed, combined, and arranged and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
WM. H. RICHMOND.
