Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REOE W. -TRDE, OF LOCK HAVEN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND TOBIAS WETZEL, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTHES-Dalia.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,835, dated July 26, 1881.
Application filed January 28, 188i. (Model.)
To all whom it may concer-n.-
Be it known that I, RECE W. TRUDE, of 'Loek Haven, in the eountyof Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, .have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Driel', of which the following is a specification.
' The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable folding` drier for drying clothes. l 1o Figure l is a partly-sectional elevation of the device folded. Fig. 2 is a partly-sectional elevation of the same, open, on line x :12, Fig'. 3. `Fig.3 is a plan of the same on line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters ot' reference indica-te corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the supportingstandard ot' the reel, consisting of a horizontal block, A', having side sockets, a, in
which are hinged or pivoted the legs A2, so
zo that they can be folded in a vertical position,
or be spread out, as shown, to support the device when open. Y
Projecting upward from the center o the standard AV is a rod, B, having a, verticallysocketed block, B', on its upper end, in which block B' an upright rod or staff, C, is secured by a pin, a'.. 0n the round part of this rod B, below the block B', is set the lower wheel or hub, D, so that itshall rest 011 the shoulder-b 3o of said rod B and revolve on the round part thereof.
To the wheel- D the arms E are hinged by hinges c, so that said arms E, when the reel is open, extend radially and nearly horizontally, inclining upward a little, with their inner ends supported on thelower annular flange, d, of said wheel D, in depressions f provided for that purpose.
On the vertical rod or staff C is placed the 4o upper wheel, F, to which are hinged by hinges g the radial arms G. The outer end of each armlGr is connected with the end of a corresponding arm, E, by a link, H, pivoted thereto in such a manner thatV when the reel is opened,
4 5 as shown in Fig. 2, by the lowering ofthe wheel F, thelinks H assume vertical positions, and
the arms E G horizontal, or nearly horizontal, positions, as shown. Each link H is provided on its outer face with one or more screw-eyes or staples. h, which hold the clothes-line I that is 5o passed through them, so that when the reel is opened the clothes-line I isdrawn taut l1orizontally. The drier, consisting of the wheels Aor hubs D F, arms E G, and links H, revolves readily about its supports. 5 5
A cap or head-block, K, is fixed on the top of the statt' O, and to its periphery are secured, by screw-eyes m or other convenient devices, the upper ends of the cords or ropes L, whose lower ends are made fast to links H, whereby 6o the hinges and arms of the reel are somewhat relieved of the strain caused by the weight of the clothes. On the top of this cap K are two vertical lugs or standards, M, that have journaled between them a vertically revolving sheave, N, over which is passed a rope, P, one end of which is made fast to the top otl the wheel F Yby means of a screw-eye, p, or other convenient device, while the other end hangs free within reach ot' the operator. By means 7o of' this ropeP the reel can be raised and closed or lowered to an open position.
When the reel is not in use the wheel or hub F can be drawn to the top of the stai C by means of the rope P, with the effect of folding the arms E G and links H in a vertical position close'about the sta' G, as shown in Fig.`1. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure hy Letters Paten t- The combination, with a reel lia'ving the 8o arms E G, hinged to heads D F and connected by links H, of the staff C, carrying aheadhlock, K, having pulley N and provided with screw-eyesm, the ropes L, attached to links H and head-block K, and the rope P, made fast to the sliding hub F and passing over pulley N, as and for the purpose specied.
