HO ISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,344, dated January 22, 1884. Application filedNovcmber 12, 1883. (No model.) h
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PENTECOSI J. MITCHELL,
' the drum-shaft, to be lifted with its bearing at one end for disengaging the gear on the drum shaft from the driving-gear on the main vertical shaft, to which the power is applied, together with a friction-brake device to control the lowering load when the gears are disconnected, the whole making an easily-worked machine, especially adapted for safe operation by horse or other animal power, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to'be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents my improved hoist in side elevation; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation,
with parts in section on line a as, Fig. 1.
I provide a substantial frame of sill-timbers, a, uprights b, braced to the sills at c, and a cross-bar or head-plate, d, in which frame, and at about the center of plate d, I journal in any approved way the upper end of a strong post or drive-shaft, e, which takes its lower end bearing in one of the timbers of a strong frame, f, which supports the hoistingdrum g in bearings fitted in the braced uprights or posts h of the frame, as shown. The bearing i for the shaft 3' of the drumlg at the end farthest from the drive-shaft 6 does not lift on or in its postsupport 71., while the bearing 70 of shaft j next the shaft 6 is fitted in a pair of posts, h, so as to slide up and down in these posts to carry the bevel-gear wheel Z, fixed to the drum-shaft j, out of gear with the drive gear-wheel m, fixed to the main vertical driving-shaft e.
foot-lever, n, strongly pivoted at 0 in one of the uprights h, and having a bar or rod, 1), connecting the short arm of the lever with the bearing is, which may be lifted by a downward pressure on the foot-plate (1 at the end of the long arm of the lever 12, as will be readily understood.
For regulating the movement of the drum 9 while lowering the empty cage or other load, I employ the usual friction-band, 4, having a hand-lever, s, by which to press it on the periphery of the drum.
The levers n and s are relatively located with each other to easily beoperated by a single attendant without leavinghis place.
The operation is as follows: The horse or other animal power is applied to a sweep, t, fixed to the shaft 6, any suitable track or floor, a, being provided for the animal to travel upon. The-lever n being in normal position and the gears l m engaged with each other, the revo lution of shaft 1 will wind the hoist-rope '0 on the drum 9 to lift the bucket, cage, or other load attached at the free end of the hoist-rope. WVhen lowering the bucket, cage, or other load, the lever 42 is worked by the foot of the attendant to disengage gears Zm, the brakelever 8 being held in readiness to press the brake-band r on the drum 9, as required to properly regulate the lowering of the load. It is evident that this disengagement of gears Zm and action of the brake r s relieves the animal of the labor of backing and directly supporting the lowering load by the breechstraps of the harness, which are so liable to break and cause accidents to the machinery, and time is also largely economized. The sizes of the gears lm are relatively proportioned to insure a quick hoist of the load.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. Ahoisting apparatus made substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a rope-drum and horse-power, combined and operated as set forth.
2. The arrangement of the geared end of the drum-shaft within a movable journal-box,
To disengage the gearing I m, I employ a substantially as herein shown and described,
whereby the geared pinion of the drum is (lrnnrshaft bearing 7., of the lever 11, substanadapted to be thrown in or out of gear with l tially as shown and described. the horse-power driving-wheel, as set forth. I 5. The combination, with the drum 1 its 3. In ahoisting apparatus, the combination, shaft j, movable bearing k, and lever n, of the 5 with the rope-drum, of a foot-lever for lnovfriction-brake r s, substantially as shown and 15 ing the drum-pinion out of gear, and a handdescribed. brake for controlling the motion of the drum, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the main shaft IO and gear I m and the Vertically-adjustable PEXTECOST J. MITCHELL. Witnesses:
