I ATTORNEY 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 2 States My invention relates to an improvement in a device for guying masts or the like and more particularly to a device with which a mast may be temporarily guyed whereby permanent guys may be easily installed andwhen installed the device easily removed.
It is an object of my invention to provide a device which allows easy permanent erection of a mast or other vertical member by one person. It is also an object of my invention to provide a device which allows easy temporary guying of a mast by a single person for subsequent easy permanent guying by the same single person.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a device which is rernovably connected to a mast and which adjustably and accurately positions the mast temporarily. It is still a further object to provide a device which is easily and quickly attached to a mast to be guyed and easily and quickly removed therefrom after the mast is permanently guyed.
I shall not here attempt to set forth and indicate all of the various objects and advantages incident to my invention, but other objects and advantages will be referred to in or .else will become apparent from that which follows.
The invention will appear more clearly from the following descriptionwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, showing by way of example a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout.
In the drawings forming part of this application:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device on a mast mounted on a roof temporarily guying the same with the permanent guys in position, the device shown in broken lines lying on the roof in substantially the position in which the temporary guys are loosely attached, the mast and roof being broken away.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my device in position on a portion of a mast, the temporary guy lines being broken away.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1 showing the permanent clamp in position on the mast with the permanent guys only.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of the releasable clamp for the mast.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my device A for guying masts includes the upper clamp member 10 and the lower clamp member 11 spaced therefrom. The clamps 10 and 11 are substantially identical, and the upper clamp is made of the arcuate half portions 12 and 13 hingedly connected at one end of each half by the hinge member 14. The half portion 12 is formed with the end flange portion 15, and the companion half portion 13 is formed with the flange portion 16. The flange portions 15 and 16 have formed therethrough a hole which receives the bolt 17 on which is mounted the wing nut 18 for drawing up the clamp 10 upon the mast 19. The half clamp portions 12 and 13 are flattened as at r: 2,923,382 Patented Feb. 2, 1960 20 to aid in a secure positioning of the elongated 'flat side support members 21, 22, 23 and 24 thereon by means of the bolt portions 25 of the pulleys 26,27, 28 and 29 respectively;
The lower clamp 11 includes the arcuate half portions 39 and 31 hingedly connected at one end of each half by the hinge member 32. The half portion 39 of the clamp 11 is formed with the end flange portion 33, and the companion half portion 31 is formed with the end flange portion 34, each of said flange portions having a hole formed therethrough to receive the bolt 35 on which is mounted the wing nut 36 for drawing up the clamp 11 upon the mast 19. The half clamp portions 30 and 31 are flattened as at 37 to aid in a secure positioning of the lower ends of the side members 21, 22, 23 and 24 thereon by means of the bolts 38. The bolts 38 also mount the ratchet wheels 39 and the reels 40, 41, 42 and 43 for each of the members '21, 22, 23 and 24 respectively. The reels 4il-43 each has a coil of light cable44 thereon, and the cable 44 of each reel 40, 41, 42 and 43 'is passed through the pulleys 26, 27, 28 and 29 respectively. Secured to the end of each of the four temporary guy cables 44 is a snap fastener 45.
Further provided in conjunction with each of the four ratchets 39 is a pawl member 46 pivotally mounted on the elongated member carrying the ratchet. Each of the pawl members 46 is formed with the handle extension portions 47, and each pawl 46 is held in releasable engagement with the companion ratchet 39 by means of a small spring 43. The reels 4043 are each rotated by means of the small handles 49 connected thereto. The elongated support members are approximately 3 feet in length, but I do not wish to be restricted to the length thereof.
Function and operation of the device With my device A the mast 19 may be erected on the roof C of the structure B by a single operator in the manner which follows. The roof mount or jack 49 is secured to the roof C of the structure B. The device A is then clamped onto the mast 19 by means of the clamps 10 and 11 in a position whereby the operator can reach the upper clamp 10 when standing even with the lower end of the mast. It is apparent that a good portion of the mast may extend upwardly and beyond the upper clamp 10. Then each of the four light guying lines 44 is payed out from the reels 4043 and one of the pulleys 2629 to a length slightly longer than the permanent guys 50 will be by releasing the pawl members 46.
The operator then carries the mast 19 with the device A thereon onto the roof C with the light temporary guying lines 44 extended therefrom. The device A is then laid on the roof C in somewhat the position shown in broken lines in Figure 1. The operator then attaches each of the four lines 44 loosely to the four permanent anchors 51 secured to the roof C by means of the snap connections 45 and returns to a point adjacent the mount 49.
The mast 19 with the device A thereon is then raised to a vertical position, and the lower heel end thereof placed in the receiver portion of the mount 49. In this position the mast 19 is loosely positioned in a vertical position due to the necessary slack in the lines 44 before the raising of the mast. The operator then takes up on each of the four lines 44 while standing at the mast by means of the take-up reels 40-43 using the small cranks 49, and by carefully taking up each line 44 to a taut condition the mast 19 may be finally placed in a true vertical substantially rigid position without the operator leaving the base of the mast.
The permanent guy wires 52 previously attached to the mast 19 by means of the permanently secured collar 53 are then secured to the anchors 51. At this point the the snaps 45 therefrom.
In Figure 6 I have illustrated a further form of an adjustable and releasable clamp 54 for the mast 19 used in the same manner as the clamps and 11. The clamp 54 is composed of the two semi-circular half portions 55 and 56 hingedly connected at 57 and overlapping at the free ends 58 and 59. The free ends 58 and 59 have threaded holes formed therethrough which align and through which the screw 60 is threaded. The support members 61, 62, 63, and 64 are similar to the supports 21-24 and mount pulleys (not shown) similar to the pulleys 26-29. To mount the clamp 54 on the mast, the screw 60 is removed, the half portions 55 and 56 hingedly separated and then closed about the mast. The screw 60 is then screwed into the ends 58 and 59 and the end of the screw brought to bear against the mast to securely position the clamp on the mast. After the procedure is carried out as heretofore set forth, the clamp is removed by removing the screw 60.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, that which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In a device for removable connection with a mast for temporarily guying the same to allow permanent guying to a support, a pair of clamps for temporary removable connection with the mast at a point spaced from the ends of the mast, means for mounting said clamps in a spaced relationship, a plurality of adjustable guy line take-up reels mounted on said clamp mounting means, each of said reels having a guy line wound thereon, a plurality of guide means for said guy lines mounted on said clamp mounting means spaced from said reels and through which said guy lines are threaded from said take-up reels for temporary adjustable connection with the support on which the mast is to be permanently guyed.
2. In a device for removable connection with a mast for temporarily guying the same to a support, a plurality of support members, means for clamping said support members on a mast at a point spaced from the end thereof, an adjustable take-up reel having a guy line wound thereon and mounted on each of said support members, guy line guide means connected to each of said support members spaced from said take-up reels and through which said guy lines are threaded.
3. In a device for removable connection with a mast for temporarily guying the same to a support, three or more elongated support members, a clamp member secured adjacent the upper ends of-said support members, a second clamp member secured adjacent the lower ends of said support members, an adjustable guy line take-up reel mounted on each of said support members adjacent said lower clamp member, a pulley member connected to each of said support members adjacent the said upper clamp member and opposite the reel mounted thereon, a guy line wound on each of said take-up reels and threaded through said pulley opposite thereto for adjustable temporary connection with the support on which the mast is to be permanently guyed.
4. In a device for temporarily guying a mast, a pair of clamps each including half portions hingedly connected for placement about the mast, a pair of elongated support members connected to the half portions of each of said clamps, a take-up reel mounted on each of said elongated support members, a pulley mounted on each of said elongated support members spaced from said take-up reels, a guy line wound on each of said reels and threaded through each of said pulleys for temporary connection with the support on which the mast is to be permanently guyed.
