CAR-COUPUNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,268, dated January 22,
Application filed November 17, 1SS3. (Xo model.)
T0 all whom it NM1/y concern/.f
Be it known that I, WALTER TURNBULL, a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Automatic Car-Coupler, of which the ling of cars can be made automatically; second,
to maintain and lock the coupling when made;
third, to provide a means by which the cars can be uncoupled from the top of car or from the ground ad Zbztmn; fourth, to construct a coupler which can be used in connection with any-.coupler now in use on the principal roads. I attain these objects bythe mechanism illus- .trated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end View, and Fig. 2 a .sidefview, of a freight-car, showing the application of my improved coupler. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, showing the position of carriage when uncoupled and in position to receive the coupling-link. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section, showing position of carriage when the coupling is made and locked. I Fig. '5 is a plan View of carriage with'top of buffer-casting removed. Fig. 6 is a view of front end when coupling is made. Fig. 7 isa transverse section taken through plane X X., Fig. 4. Fig. S is a transverse section taken through plane Z Z, Fig. 4.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
To the cast-iron buffer B is pivoted the tongue or draw-bar T by the rod F, which passes through the draft-timbers, as also the buffer B, as shown. The buffer B is further secured to draft-timber by the bolts c o c. The coupling-pin P is secured to the end of tongue T by the pin p. To the under side of the tongue T is secured a flat spring, s, which fits against the coupling-pin P, the object of this spring being to keep the coupling-link down on the bottoni of buffer. An opening is madein the bottom of buii'er B at N N, through which the carriage C is passed and placed in position. This carriage C is maintained in position, by the' bolts i z', placed in bottom of buffer, as shown. These boltsiz havea thimble or sleeve on them between the sides of buffers B, on which rests the the bottom of the carriage C, and which admits of the carriage O being easily moved without any material friction or wear. The cast-iron carriage C is made a little smaller than the inside of bu'er B, and is slotted to admit the tongueTto pass through the center, as shown. A shoulder, h, is formed on the carriage C, on which rests the pin d, placed in the tongue T, to hold the tongue Tand coupling-pin P in position to receive the link when a coupling is to be made. y
t isha bolt passing through the sides of buffer B and working inthe slots o. Vhen the coupling is made and the carriage is run back, this bolt t drops into 'the slot Z, made in carriage C,
and locks same. To this bolt t is secured the sheave o, carrying the chain g. Y
On the carriage C is formed a shoulder, u, which keeps the carriage C from running too far out bystriking the bolt t. l
M is asheave secured to the carriage C, guiding the chain g.' The back end of carrier C is so formed that when the tongue T is down and the carriage C run back, it engages with the top of tongue and locks it, as shown at K, Fig. 4. The chain g is attached to the tongue T by the eyebolts f, and passes over sheave M and under the sheave o, secured to the bolt t, and up Aand over the sheave secured to end of car, and passes on and is attached to the lever R. This lever B works on the fulcrum y, and has a handle at each end of same, one handle extending above the top of car and the other within reach from the ground, so that the car can be uncoupled either from the top of car or from the ground.
W is a guide for the lever, to keep same in position.
Having thus described the parts of my invention, the working of same is as follows: Fig. 3 shows the position of carriage G and tongue T ready to receive the coupling-link, which enters the mouth of buffer and strikes .against the end E of carriage C, pushing same back, when the pin d is dislodged and the IOO tongue T drops and the pin l engages with the link, and at the saine time the bolt t drops into the slot Z and locks thc carriage C.
When it is desired to disengage the coupling-link, the lever R is pushed over, which first draws the bolt t from the 'slot l, which unlocks the carriage, and then pulls the carriage C forward, and lifts the tongue T till the pin (l rests in the shoulder h,where it remains until the car is coupled again.
I am aware that prior to my invention oarcouplings have been made to act automatically. I therefore do not clai n1 such a combination, broadly; but
That I claim as my invention, .and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The co1nbination,witl1 the hollow buffer B, provided with the opening N, the bolts i 1',
with sleeves e e, the slots o o, and the carriage C, having the shoulders h and il, the slot I, and
carrying the sheave M, and the tongue or lever T, pivoted to buffer B, and provided with the pin d, the coupling-pin P, the spring s, and the eyebolt f, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the buffer B and the carriage C, of the bolt t, working in s lot o o, and carrying the sheave o, all substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the carriage C and the, tongue T, of the chain y, attached to the eyebolt f, passing over sheave M, and under sheave o, and up and over sheave to the lever R, and the lever R, pivoted at y, and having a handle at each end of saine, all substantially as shown.
