Description

United States FUEL INJECTION PUlVIP Application June 21, 1957, Serial No. 667,105 6 Claims. (Cl. 103-2) This invention relates to distributor type fuel injection pumps and the principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fuel injection pump of the type set forth which is relatively simple and compact and economical in construction, yet eicient in operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. 1t will be understood that changes m-ay be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, as the preferred form has been given by way of illustration only.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a fuel injection apparatus embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout, the apparatus shown embodying the invention comprises -a housing having a bore 10a in which is mounted rotor 11 having a pumping portion 12and a distributing portion 13. Drive shaft 14- is journaled in housing 10 and is connected to rotor 11 for effecting rotation of said rotor. The drive shaft 14 is adapted to be connected to a drive in the engine.
The hydraulic head 15 of housing 10 has the outlets 16, one of which is adapted to be connected to its respective engine cylinder or combustion chamber by a fuel line in the usual manner. This hydraulic head 15 is preferably formed separately and ts into an opening in the housing although it could be integral therewith.
Each of said outlets 16 is connected to the bore for rotor 11 by ducts or passages 17. The outlets 16 are adapted to receive fuel successively from fuel distributor slot or port 18 on the periphery of distributing portion 13 of rotor 11 and fuel reaches said slot or port 18 from annular slot 19 which registers at all times with fuel passage 20 from delivery valve 21 which is normally retained closed by spring 2-2 but which is adapted to be opened by fuel pressure through port 23 and annular groove 24.
Rotor 11 has a bore 25 in which is positioned filler plug 26 which closes bore 25 and which has the reduced extension 27 to reduce the working volume of the pump.
The housing has the inlet 28 adapted to be connected to a fuel supply line from a source of fuel and from inlet 28 fuel passes to annular sump 29 in the periphery of annular head 15 from which fuel passes through lill ports 30 and 30a to the pumping chamber.
Pumping portion 12 comprises a radial bore containing opposed pistons or plungers 31 and 31a and surrounding pumping portion 12 is provided the internal cam 32 having opposed lobes adapted to effect simultaneous pumping strokes of the plungers and the suction stroke of the plungers is effected by spring 33 which extends into adjacent bores in the respective plungers.

- Plunger 31a is provided with metering means comprising an inclined or helical port 36 which communicates with the bore in the plunger and spill port 37 through which fuel spills back to sump 29.
The quantity of fuel delivered by the pump is controlled by rotating helical spill port 36 in plunger 31a relative to spill port 37 to thereby control the quantity of fuel spilled.
Plunger 31a is adapted to be rotated to vary the phase relationship of helical slot or port 36 by means of the geared or toothed end 38 which meshes with gears or teeth on rack 39 which is operatively connected to sleeve 40 which rotates on rotor 11 with said rotor and said sleeve 40 is adapted to be axially adjusted on rotor 11 by means of governor sleeve 41 which is operated by the centrifugal weights 42, only one of which is shown, and which is connected through governor lever 43 to governor spring 44, which is adapted to be adjusted by an operating lever external of the housing and which is mounted on shaft 45.
In operation the governor weights 42 tend to y outwardly with increase in speed and are resisted by spring 44 working through sleeve 41. As sleeve 41 moves under the force of the centrifugal weights it carries with it the control rack 39 operating on pinion or gear 34 of one or more of the plungers and this movement varies the position of the helical slot or groove 36 in relation to spill port 37 thereby varying the quantity of fuel delivered by the pump.
Fuel entering sump 29 passes through till ports 30, one of which is usually provided for each pump outlet, although a lesser number could be employed, to the pumping chamber upon each suction stroke of the plungers.
Upon each pumping stroke of the plunger, and while the fill ports in the rotor 11 are out of register with fill ports 30, fuel is pumped by the plungers through port 23 and the delivery valve 21 and delivery passage or duct 20 to annular groove 19 to distributing port 18 which delivers fuel to each of the outlets successively upon rotation of the rotor.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided new and improved means for obtaining all of the objects and advantages of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a housing having a longitudinal bore, a rotor mounted for rotation in said longitudinal bore, said rotor having a pumping portion and a distributing portion whereby fuel pumped by said pumping portion will be delivered to said distributing portion, said distrbuting portion being adapted to communicate with a plurality of outlets successively upon rotation of said rotor, said pumping portion of said rotor having a radial bore, a plunger mounted for reciprocation in said radial bore, cam means adjacent the periphery of said pumping portion for effecting the pumping stroke of said plunger upon rotation of said rotor, said plunger having fuel spill control means and means actuated upon rotation of said rotor for effecting rotation of said plunger to thereby adjust said fuel spill control means, whereby the quantity of fuel delivered by said pumping portion to said distributing portion may be varied.

In a device of the character described, a housing having a longitudinal bore, a rotor mounted for rotation in said longitudinal bore, said rotor having a pumping portion and a distributing portion whereby fuel pumped by said pumping portionI will be delivered to said distributing portion, said distributing portion being adapted to communicate with a plurality of outlets successively upon rotation of said rotor, said pumping portion of said rotor having a radial bore, a plunger mounted for reciprocation in said radial bore, cam means adjacent the periphery of said pumping portion for effecting tne pumping stroke ol` said plunger upon rotation or' said rotor, said plunger having fuel spill control means and means actuated upon rotation of said rotor for effecting rotation of said plunger to thereby to adjust said fuel spill control means, said fuel spill control means comprising a slot in said plunger and a fuel spill port adapted to communicate with said slot.
3. ln a device of the character described, a housing having a longitudinal bore, a roto-r mounted for rotation in said longitudinal bore, said rotor having a pumping portion and a distributing portion whereby fuel pumped by said pumping portion will be delivered to said distributing portion, said distributing portion being adapted to communicate with a plurality or' outlets successively upon rotation of said rotor, said pumping portion of said rotor having a radial bore, a plunger mounted for reciprocation in said radial bore, cam means adjacent the periphery of said pumping portion for effecting the pumping stroke of said plunger upon rotation of said rotor, said plunger having fuel spill control means and means actuated upon rotation of said rotor for effecting rotation of said plunger to thereby adjust said fuel spill control means, said fuel spill control means comprising a helical slot in said plunger and a fuel spill port adapted to communicate with said slot.
4. ln a device of the character described, a housing having a longitudinal bore, a rotor mounted for rotation in said longitudinal bore, said rotor having a pumping portion and a distributing portion whereby fuel pumped by said pumping portion will be delivered to said distributing portion, said distributing portion being adapted to communicate with a plurality of outlets successively upon rotation of said rotor, said pumping portion of said rotor having a radial bore, a plunger mounted for reciprocation in said radial bore, cam means adjacent the periphery of said pumping portion for effecting the pumping stroke of said plunger upon rotation of said rotor, said plunger having fuel spill control means and means actuated upon rotation of said rotor for effecting rotation of said plunger to thereby adjust said fuel spill control means, and means on said rotor for actuating said means for rotating said plunger upon rotation of said rotor.
5. In a device of the character described, a housing having a longitudinal bore, a rotor mounted for rotation in said longitudinal bore, said rotor having a pumping portion and a distributing portion in communication with said pumping portion, whereby fuel pumped by said pumping portion will be delivered to said distributing portion, said distributing portion being adapted to distribute t'uel pumped by said pumping portion to each of a plurality or outlets successively upon rotation of said rotor, said pumping portion having a radial bore, opposed plungers mounted for reciprocation in said radial bore, cam means adjacent the periphery of said pumping portion of` effecting the pumping stroke of saidl piungers upon relative rotation of said rotor and cam means, one of said plungers having fuel spill control means and means for rotating said plunger to adjust said fuel spill control means, said means for rotating said plunger comprising centrifugally operated means on said rotor and means operatively connecting said centrifugally operated means and said plunger, whereby upon movement or' said centiifugally actuated means, said plunger will be rotated to thereby effect adjustment of said fuel spill control means.
6. in a device of the character described, a housing having a longitudinal bore, a rotor mounted for rotation in said longitudinal bore, said rotor having -a pumping portion and a distributing portion in communcaition with said pumping portion, whereby fuel pumped by said pumping portion will be delivered to said distributing portion, said distributing portion being adapted to distribute fuel pumped by said pumping portion to each of a plurality of outlets successively upon rotation of said rotor, said pumping portion having a radial bore, opposed plungers mounted for reciproeation in said radial bore, cam means adjacent the periphery of said pumping portion for effecting the pumping stroke of said plungers upon relative rotation of said rotor and cam means, one o-f said plungers having fuel spill control means and means for rotating said plunger to adjust said fuel spill control means, said means for rotating said plunger comprising centrifugally actuated means on said rotor and a rack operatively connected to said centrifugally actuated means and engaging said plunger, whereby upon movement of said rack by said centrifugally actuated means, said plunger will be rotated to thereby effect adjustment of said fuel spill control means.
