SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 292,226, dated January 2.2, 1884.
' Application filed May 22,1883. .(No man Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN HEYWOOD and JOHN JoNEs, respectively of Brooklyn and of Jersey City, in the counties of Kings and of Hudson, and States of New York and New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in hose-reels, in which means of obtaining a water-supply at any point within a given radius from a stationary source are provided for fireextinguishing and other purposes; and the ob jects of our improvements are, first, to efiect the opening and closure of the supply-valve automatically by the rotation of the reel second, to cause the valve to operate only when desired; third, to establish direct communication of the hose with the water-supply by making the shaft of the'reel partially hollow; and, fourth, to accomplish these ends with simplicity of construction, we attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of our invention, partially broken and in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation ofthe same. Fig. 3 is'a detail section thereof,'sho-wing the means by which water is conducted to the hose on the drum of the reel and of controlling such supply; and Fig. 4 shows the valve-operating mechanism.

A A represent the bearings in which the journals B B of the shaft 0, on which the reel 0 is mounted, revolve. The journals B B are prolonged at one end to give a location for the crank R, suitably affixed thereto, and at the other end to afford a bearing, respectively,
\ to the concentric disk E and to the cog-wheel D. The shaft 0 is partially hollow to permit the communication of water from the pipe L to the tube M. The cog-wheel D, when in contact with the toothed segment I, meshes therewith. The disk E, mounted on the shaft 0, has a lug or'projeotlon, F, on its circumference, which, during the revolution of said disk, engages either end of a slot, G, in the yoke G, according as the motion of the disk is forward or backward. The yoke G serves to disconnect or gear the segment I with the wheel D, thus effecting the operation of the supply-valve K, and is pivoted by an arm, H, to the headed segment I, mounted on the shaft K. Its slot G is cut concentric with its own line of curvature, and the slot is so terminated by the walls of the yoke as to engage the lug F on the disk E at timed periods, where by the shifting of the valve is accomplished. The operation is as'follows: When water is desired at any point, near or remote, the hose is unwound from' the reel by merely pulling it, which act causes the revolution of the reelshaft 0, and hence of the disk E and cogwheel D. In traversing its circuit the pro jection F on the disk E meets and engages the vertical wall of the slot G, and forces the yoke G to partake of its own motion, which forward motion of the yoke effects a corresponding forward motion of the crank-arm H, and conversely, thus alternately engaging and disengaging the geared segment I, and effecting the shifting of valve K. It will be understood that the same means which suffice to turn on the water are equally efficacious in shutting it off, which is done in the same manner during the reverse motion caused by turning the crank R to rewind the hose on the drum.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In hose-reels, the combinatiomwith the headed toothed segment I, having a yoke, G, pivoted thereto, of a disk, E, having a projection, F, on its circumference, a cog-wheel, D, mounted on the same axis, partially hollowed shaft O, and valve K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In hose-reels, the combination, with the headed toothed segment I, having an elliptical yoke, G, pivoted thereto, disk E, having a projection, F, on its circumference, and cog- 5 wheel D, of valve K, operated as described, pipe L, tube M, and shaft 0, partially hollowed, substantially as shown.
