STonronD, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seattle, lashington, have invented a certain new and useful 1mprovement in Sounding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention relates to sounding apparatus employed by mariners for ascertaining the depth of water or for bringing up specimens of bottom, said apparatus comprising a reel, line, and weight, and mechanism for controlling said reel.
rIhe principal object of our invention is to provide sounding apparatus which will enable the operator to quickly pay out the line and quickly draw in the same, necessitating the attention of only one ope 'ator in accomplishing the end in view.
Cther objects of our invention are to provide sounding apparatus of the character described which simple in construction, easily manipulated, substantial., and neat in appearance.
Further objects of our invention will appear in thev following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view through apparatus embodying` our invention, parts being broken away to dis* close details.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, where similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the views, fr designates a standard; B a reel revolubly carried thereby, witha horizontal axis of rotation, C a line secured to said reel; D a weight at the free end of line C; E a handwheel; F motiontransmitting means operatively connecting` wheel E and reel B to impart movement of the former to the latter; G a device placing a normal drag upon means D; and, H a device for maintaining means F inoperative as motion-transmitting means so as to free reel B from operative relation to wheel E.
Referring first to the standard A, it is preferably constructed to provide a hollow 3 and in the example shown comprises a main body portion 4, provided with a flange 5 at its lower end, receiving bolts 6 by which the standard is secured to the deck; and, a
gap 7 mounted upon main body portion a. fhe body l is provided with alined horizontal bores 8 serving as bearings, while the upper portion of the body l and lower portion of cap T is provided with bores 9 and 10 which are horizontally alined, and at the division line between body l and cap 7, these bores 9 and 10 serving as bearings. The reel B may be of any suitable type embodying a main body 11, cylindrical in shape, and flanges 12 secured to the ends thereof, the line C being secured to the body l1 in any suitable manner, so that the free end portion of the line depends from the periphery of body 11, due to the weight D, and the force of gravity acting thereupon.
While we have herein shown a handswheel E for operating the apparatus manually, it is to be understood that this ismerely by way of example since a crank might be substituted therefor or other suitable devices adapted to impart movement to the motiontransmitting means F.
Said means mayxcomprise a shaft 13 received by bearings 8, and supporting the reel B; a shaft 14: received by bearings 9 and 10, and supporting the wheel E, said sha-ft 14 beingreciprocable longitudinally; and, in the example shown, provided with an enlargement 15 in bearing 10, and providing a shoulder 16 for a purpose to be subsequently set forth; a gear wheel 17 rigid with shaft 13 internally of standard A; and, a co-meshing gear 18 within said standard. The gear 17 may be made rigid with shaft 13, as by collars 19 encircling said shaft and set-screws 2O turned tight against the shaft, while the gear 18 may be similarly secured to its shaft 1li, as by collars 21 and set-screws 22. The gear 18 is so mounted upon its respective shaft that, when the wheel E engages the standard A, said gear is in co-meshing relation with gear 17, however, if the shaft 14- is drawn, as by imparting movement to wheel E, to the position shown by dotted lines, the gear 18 is moved out of meshing relation to gear 17, which frees the reel B from wheel E, and the reol B is free to rotate due to the weight D acting upon line C.
In order to place the normal drag upon means F, the device G, in the example shown, said device being an expansion spring, is provided, said spring encircling the shaft 14 and bearing against gear 18 at one of its collars 21, the other end portion is considerablyy compressed. lt is pre-A ferred to provide a spring G of such tension that it will place a normal drag upon the motion-transmitting means F resisting cas ual rotation of drum B responsive to the force of gravity acting upon weight D and line C.
As to the device H, it may comprise a pin 2d adapted to extend through perforation '25 in standard A leading to bore 10; a chain,
or other flexible member 26 secured to pin 2A, and to the standard A as by screw eye 27. When the gears 1'? and 18 are drawn out of co-meshing relation, as by moving shaft 14 longitudinally, said pin may drop downwardly engaging the shoulder 16, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the reel B is free to rotate as herein before set forth.
`When bringing the apparatus into use, the operator has merely to place the weight D over deck, draw shaft 14C longitudinally until the gears 17 and 18 are out of co-meshing relation, whereupon the reel B will rotate playing out the line C. When the weight D engages the bottom pin 24 may be raised, whereupon the gear i8, responsive to spring Gr moves into co-meshing relation to gear 17 and because of the normal drag of spring Gr the drum B will cease to rotate, and it can be determined, by reference to line C, the depth of the water. in order to draw in line C, the wheel is rotated, and it is preferred to provide gear 18 of a diameter considerably greater than the diameter of gear 1T so that these two gears are speed-increasing when movement is imparted to wheel E.
Changes-in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of our invention; but,

ln sounding apparatus, the combination a hollow standard, a wheel and reel, a horizontal shaftsupporting said reel from said standard, a longitudinally movable horizontal shaft supporting said wheel from said standard and provided with a shoulder, a gear rigid with said {irst shaft, a gear rigid with said second shaft, said gear disposed in said hollow standard and adapted to co-mesh, or move out of co-meshing relation'by movement of said second shaft, a pin adapted te be disposed in engagement with the said shoulder of said second shaft to retain it with its gear out of meshing relation with the gear of the first shaft, and an expansion spring engaging the gear of said second shaft and compressed between said gear and the wall of said standard, said spring encircling said second shaft and nor mally tending to force said second shaft to dispose said gears in co-ineshing relation.
