MAGNETO-ELECTRiC GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,153, dated January 2.2, 1884.
Application filed August 20, 1883.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLrAir J. Bownx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magneto-Electric Generators, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a-part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction and arrangement of magnetoeleetric generators of the class used for operating call-bells, signals, and similar devices utilizing currents of rapidly-alternating p0- larity; and it consists in certain novel features of design and construction, the peculiar features of which will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my device, the front of its containing-box being removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters denote like parts.
A represents the wood-work or casing and the back thereof.
13 Bare a pair of permanent magnets, preferably constructed of several layers or bars of steel, 6, which layers are divided into two equal portions and separated by a thick washer or collar, D, of magnetic material, which is interposed between said portions, the whole being united, and magnetic contact maintained between the several parts by means of an iron screw, 0, that passes through the several layers and the washer D, thus producing a horseshoe-magnet having poles at its lower extremities, as indicated at N and S. A washer, F, and a serew,l1l, of non-magnetic material, are used to hold, support, and separate the lower portions of the magnet.
I I represent a pair of standards or bearings of non-magnetic material, preferably brass, which are provided with horizontal extensions or feet 1', resting upon the bottom of the case, and adjustably secured thereto by screws 1 I.
(No model.)
H is a bar of iron, which is shouldered at its extremities, and supported in the bearings I I.
G G are short bars of iron, the outer ends of which are slightly beveled, as shown at d, and they are secured to the bar H near the extremities thereof and at right angles thereto. They are provided with helices g g, of which they form the cores, and at the same time, be ing magnetically connected through the bar H, they will form a keeper for any pair of opposing magnetic poles against which they may rest.
The bar H is provided with a lever or handle, K, that extends outward, by means of which a rocking or oscillating motion may be readily imparted to the said bar H and to the electro magnets g g, pivotally supported thereon.
In assembling my device I use two magnets, 13 and B, constructed as hereinbefore described, and I prefer to arrange them vertically, their poles below, as shown in Fig. 1; but it is obvious that they may be placed in any operative position. The electro-magnet G G is so mounted that its polar extension extends between the poles X S of the magnets 13 B, and their coils are connected to suitable conductors, the circuit or circuits of which are capable of being closed when desired.
IVhen the device is not in use, the polar ex tensions rest against one side or other of the compound permanent magnets, and, being in magnetic contact, as stated, they form akeeper therefor, the said magnets .B B being arranged so as always to present opposite poles tothe said polar extension of the electroanagnet G G. \Vhen the lever Ii is moved back and forth, the electro-magnet G G will alternately approach and recede from its field-magnets B B, and currents of alternating polarity will be the result, which, being sent to line by suitable conductors, will operate the signaling or other devices that may be included in circuit therewith.
An obvious modification of the above would be the substitution of electro -magnets and local batteries for the permanent magnets described.
Having described my invention, I clai1n In a magneto-electric generator, the con1- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in pound permanent magnet B, consisting, essenpresence of two Witnesses. tially, of steel bars 12, collar D, of magnetic N B ,T 1 material, collar F, of non-magnetic material, VILLIALI 5 and screws 0 and E, entering the back a of case Vitnesses:
A, as and for the purpose herein shown and G. "W. BUTLER,
described. WV. H. HUSTED.
