JACQUES B. STETTHEIMER AND THEODORE LEIS, OF ROCHESTER, N. Y.
VETERINARY MEDICINE-SPOON.-
SPECIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 291,950, dated January 15, 1884.
Application illcd November 6, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JACQUES R. STETT- HEIMER and THEODORE Lnrs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, have jointly invented an Improved Veterinary Spoon, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to an improved veterinary spoon or instrument designed for use in veterinary practice for the administration of medicines to horses, cattle, or other animals, which invention is fully described in the following specification, and the novel features thereof specified inthe claims ann exedthereto.
Our improved veterinary spoon is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan or top view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the bowl of the spoon, on the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is atransverse section on the line .y' 1 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is asection on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a partial view of the sliding cover.
Our improved veterinary spoon consists, essentially, of a bowl or receptacle, A, which may be of any preferred size or shape, a handle, B, attached to one end or side of the bowl, and a sliding cover, 0, having a rod, D, connected thereto, which extends along the handle and serves to open or close the bowl by sliding the cover lengthwise of the handle, as represented in the full and dotted lines 0 0, Figs. 1 and 2.
Our improved veterinary spoon may be constructed of any suitable materialsuch as wood, glass, china, rubber, papier-mach, or of metal. It may also be japanned or lacquered or plated or coated with any suitable metal. The upper edges of the bowl are made straight, so that a good joint may be formed between them and the lower side of the cover 0 when the bowl is closed sufficiently tight to retain the fiuid or medicine while the instrument is being introduced into the mouth of the animal. The upper margin or edge of the bowl is continuous all the way around, so that the bowl will be tight when the cover is slid into place above it.
In the accompanying drawings we have represented the handle B as provided with a groove, which receives the rod D, by which the cover is drawn back, so as to open the bowl after the introduction of the spoon into the mouth, but the rod D may be employed without the groove in the handle, or it may be simplya fiat bar resting on the top or the side of the handle. At its outer end the rod or bar D may be provided with a ring or hand-piece, E,.to facilitate the operation of opening the bowl. 011 the side of the bowl opposite the point of attachment of the handle we form a beveled lug, f, against the inner inclined side of which the beveled edge of the cover 0 strikes when the bowl is closed, by which means the cover is forced against the edges of the bow1,'thereby forming a close joint. The cover 0 may be provided with a notch, g, Fig. 7, having beveled sides, which fit against corresponding bevels on the lug f. At its inner end the cover is held in place by the guides h h, which fit over the beveled sides of the handle B, as represented in Fig. 4. The handle is made slightly narrower at i, Fig. 1, in order to allow the guides h h to slip off from the beveled sides of the handle when it is desired to remove the cover from the spoon. The rod D may be formed in one piece with the sliding cover, or it may be attached thereto by a screw-thread, as represented in Fig. 3, or other suitable device.
In order to retain the outer end of the rod in position 011 the handle, the lugs Z Z are attached to the handle.
The mode of using our improved veterinary spoon will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The bowl of the spoon being filled with the dose of medicine which it is intended to administer, if the medicine be liquid, or any powder being mixed in the bowl with water or other suitable fiuid, the spoon is inserted closed a sufficient distance into the animals mouth, and, the cover being slid back by moving the rod D, the contents of the spoon are deposited by turning it over or partially rotating the handle in such a position that the animal is compelled to swallow them. To any person familiar with the difficulties encountered in administering medicines to animals as at present practiced the advantages of our improved veterinary spoon will be too obvious to require description.
It is obvious that small sizes of our improved instrument may, under certain circumstances, be used for the purpose of administering medicines to human beings.
5 WVe are aware that medicine-spoons having a movable cover arranged to be opened after the introduction of the spoon into the mouth have been previously patented.
We claim 10 1. The combination, with the bowl A, having a continuous straight upper margin or edge, and provided with the handle B on same plane therewith, of the cover 0, arranged to slide along the upper sides of the bowl and the I5 handle near the bowl, and adapted to close the bowl by direct sliding contact between its lower surface and the margin of the bowl, the sliding rodvD, attached to the cover and parallel with the handle, and a suitable guide or guides arranged to cause the cover and the rod to, slide in the proper path, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the bowl A, having a continuous straight upper margin or 2 5 edge and providedwith the handle B on same plane therewith, of the cover 0, arranged to slide along the upper. sides of the bowl and handle, sliding rodD, attached to the cover and parallel with the handle, and means for forcing the cover against the margin of the bowl when closed, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the bowl A, provided with beveled lug f, of the handle B, sliding cover 0, having guides h h, substantially asdescribed.
4. The combination, with the bowl A, having a continuous straight upper margin or edge and provided with the handle B on the same plane therewith, having a longitudinal groove adapted to receive the sliding rod D, 40 of the sliding cover 0, having rod D attached thereto and parallel to the handle, and a suitable guide or guides to insure the. motion of V the cover in theproper path, substantially as described.
