Description

WATER ELEVATOR. No. 291,759. Patented Jain. 8, 1884.y
WITNESS@ y I W INV '12R I i Ilnrrnn Srnrns arent trice.
JAMES F. MCCALMONT, OF VAYNE, NEBRASKA.
WATER-ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,759, dated January 8,1884.
Application led January 10, 1883. (Xo model.)
1b @ZZ whom t may conce-rn:
Be it known that I, J Anus F. MoCALMoNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vayne, in the county of lVayne and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Elevators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figur es of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention pertains toimprovements in well-bucket-operating mechanism, and it consists in the combina-tion and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 represent a front view, partly in section, anda side view, respectively, of my improvement with the bucket just emerging from the well, or partly above the curb. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detailed views thereof with the bucket and its tilting mechanism in different positions.
In carrying out my invention I employ upright side pieces, A A, arranged at opposite sides of the well-curb, and preferably duplicated to enable the duplicating of the tilting mechanism, in order that the bucket may be operated from either side.
B is the bucket, having two opposite projections or studs, B', at its sides, and suspended by a rope, a, or other suitable medium passed through an eye or over a pulley depending from the upper cross-piece or top of the side pieces, and from whence it may be passed to al windlass or winding-drum.
C C are two curved guides secured to the under side of the well-curb, one being adapted to extend in a curvature at one side oi' the plane of the movement of the bucket and the other to extend in a curvature at the other side of the plane of its movement, and arranged diagonally opposite to the other guide, the purpose of which is to bring the bail of the bucket in alignment with the windlass by the studs B striking said guides and being brought into position to enter the slots or grooves in the uprights A.
D D are the tilting or cam levers or devices, pivoted one in each of the opposite side pieces or uprights, A, and adapted to have movement within recesses b therein. Also, made in these side pieces or uprights are additional recesses or slots, c c, of an approximate inverted-V shape, and arranged in a plane in front of the levers or tilting device D. It will be noticed that as the illed bucket passes up to near the tilting or emptying point its studs B will pass in close proximity with the tilting-levers, as seen in Fig. 4, and as the bucket continues its passage the said studs will strike the horns of the levers in the plane of their movement, and thus tilt the levers and throw their lower ends outward against the adjacent uprights A, as seen in Fig. 5, in which position they will be held until the studs of the bucket have passed downward over the upper or cam ends of the levers and into the side recess, b. To permit this latter movement of the studs of the bucket, the hoisting-rope is slackened, the gravity of the bucket which has thus been slightly tilted causing its studs to move down the inclined surfaces or faces of the cam-levers. Vhen the studs of the bucket have escaped from the levers, permitting the latter Jtoassume their original position, the studs will pass into the beaks or one of the arms of the inverted-V-shaped recesses c, as seen in Fig. 6, when the tilting of the bucket will be completed by continuing to unwind the hoisting-rope, and thus be emptied. By slightly pulling upon the hoistingrope, the bucket will be sufficiently elevated to lift its studs out of said portions of the recesses c and against the under edges of the pawls D, after which, upon continuing to slacken the hoisting-rope, the bucket will descend, its studs passing down the longer arms of the recesses c. and thence down inclines of the recesses b, whence they will escape from the levers and the uprights, allowing the bucket to continue its descent-to and into the well and be again filled.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In a well-bucket operating or tilting mech- IOO anisln, the combination, with the bucket hevcam-levers and uprights having recesses, sub- 1o ing studs or projections zit its sides, of the cumstantially as and for the purpose set forth. levers set in recesses in suitable supports, and In testimony whereof I ztfix my signature in zrdapted to guide the bucket to one side of its I presence of two witnesses.
