Description

Dec. 15, 1959 L. GOTTFRIED ET AL 2,917,339 I BABY C/ARRIAGE Filed Sept. 16, 1958 INVENTORS LOUIS GOTTFRIED BY JACOB BERGER ATTORNEY 2,917,339 Patented Dec. 15, 1959 BABY CARRIAGE Louis Gottfried and Jacob Berger, New York, NY.
Application September 16, 1958, Serial No. 761,427
1 Claim. (Cl. 296-35) The present invention relates to a baby carriage, stroller or similar article and is concerned particularly with such structure wherein the carriage body is removably secured to the running gear, as disclosed in Patent No. 2,512,995 of Jacob Berger.
It has been found that baby carriages, strollers or the like, which are equipped with a removable carriage body, had the drawback that the carriage body was subjected to jolts if moved over roads which were not smooth.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a releasable locking means disposed between the carriage body frame and pusher, to retain the carriage body when inserted into the running gear at a predetermined level in connection with the pusher.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a locking means between the carriage body and the pusher, which locking means is spring biased and releasable, so that the carriage body may be easily removed from the running gear, if required.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective side view of the stroller indicating the location of the locking means for the carriage body;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the locking means as secured to the carriage body and the pusher, respectively;
Fig. 3 is a section along the lines 33 of Fig. 2;'
and
Fig. 4 is a section'along the lines 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, and in particular to Figure 1, the stroller or baby carriage comprises a running gear 1 which is preferably equipped with two oppositely disposed and U-shaped parallel guide members 2 which are secured to the axles 3 of the running gear. The carriage body 4 is supported by a pair of U-shaped supporting members 5 the lower horizontally disposed portions of which are received by the guide members 2. A pusher member 6 is secured to the outer side faces of the guide members 2 either by riveting or welding, to provide a permanent connection between the guide members -2 and the pusher member 6. The carriage body 4 is, in conventional manner, carrying a hood 7 which may be maintained in upright or in collapsed position.
The carriage body 4 may be of rigid material or may be made also collapsible. The carriage body 4 has a rigid upper frame 8 which forms a flange-like projection 8' having a bottom face 8 In order to prevent a jolting of the carriage body 4 during moving of the stroller or baby carriage on uneven roads, a special locking means 9 is provided between the flange-like projection 8' of the upper frame 8 of the carriage body 4 and the upwardly projecting portion of the pusher member 6.
The locking device 9 comprises a longitudinal base plate 10, a preferably triangular projecting portion 11 of which is bent at an angle of 90 from the base plate I 2 10. The triangular portion 11 has inserted therein a spring biased bolt 12 which is equipped with a head portion-13 ;andhas inserted therein a'helical spring 14, a structure which is known per se in connection ,with spring biased bolts.
The upwardly projecting portion of the pusher 6 has a recess 15 substantially slightly below the normal level of the flange-like portion 8 of the carriage body 4, which recess 15 is adapted to receive the bolt 12 in operative position. If the bolt 12 is inserted in the recess 15 of the pusher member 6, the rear portion of the carriage body 4 is locked to the pusher member 6 and, thereby, retained in its position at a predetermined level. By this arrangement any jolting during the wheeling of the stroller or baby carriage is no more transferred into swinging movements of the baby carriage body 4, as experienced without providing the locking means 9.
The base plate 10 has lengthwise arranged a plurality of substantially circular double openings 16 which permit the securing of the base plate 10 to the bottom face 8' of the flange-like portion 8 of the carriage body 4 in two different laterally spaced apart positions. The plurality of substantially circular openings provides further the possibility to secure the base plate 10 to the bottom face 8 of the flange-like frame 8 by means of two or more screw bolts 17 which may be selectively spaced apart at different distances. The screw bolts 17 may be inserted into the inner or the outer row of substantially circular openings 16, whereby the locking device is disposed closer or further out in lateral direction from the carriage body and thus takes care of any inaccuracies in the arrangement of the pusher member 6. If the pusher member 6 has, for instance, its lateral members spaced apart from the body frame 8, the double circular openings 16 permit of mounting of the locking device 9 always in such position that the bolt 12 penetrates the re cess 15 of the pusher member 6 in its operative position.
In order to collapse the stroller or baby carriage it is merely necessary to withdraw the head portion 13 and, thereby, the bolt 12 from the recess 15 of the pusher memher 6 and the carriage body can be lowered out of alignment of the bolt 12 from the recess 15 and the supporting member may then slide out from the guide members 2.
While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claim.
We claim:
In a stroller or the like, a running gear having a pair of oppositely disposed longitudinal guide members, and a body having an upper frame and a pair of substantially U- shaped supporting members, one leg of said U-shaped supporting members being secured to said body and the other leg of said U-shaped supporting members being received by the corresponding of said guide member, so that said body is removably secured to said running gear, and a pushing member having lateral side members projecting upwardly from said running gear and passing adjacent the sides of said upper frame of said body, and a locking device releasably securing said lateral side members to said sides of said upper frame, in order to avoid jolting of said body between said lateral side members and retaining said body with said running gear, said locking device comprising an angular member having a longitudinal base plate and a second plate extending integrally from said base plate at an angle of substantially-, means for securing said base plate to said frame, a bolt inserted in said second plate and projecting outwardly therefrom, said pusher member having an opening opposite to and receiving said bolt in its operative position,
ber, said base plate having two rows of a plurality of lengthwise arranged openings, and said securing means comprising screw bolts to'be inserted selectively into either one of said rows of openings, in orderto provide a selective lateral location of said base platerelative to ing spring-biased.
