CLOTHES PIN BAG Filed Aug. 14, 1957 Wfi} INVENTORS F4 3 I HA FRED QUE/9965? United States Patent CLOTHES PIN BAG Alfred E. Barber and Albert Maiga, Thomaston, Conn. Application August 14, 1957, Serial No. 678,069
2 Claims. (Cl. 248-99) Our invention relates to a collapsible receptacle provided with a means for suspending same from any desired means so that the receptacle is normally accessible through its open portion.
The principal object of our invention is-to provide an article of the character described in which the receptacle body portion is provided with a spreader therefor swingably supported in a bracket fixed on a suspension means of novel design.
Another object is to provide an article of the type described in which the spreader swing is limited by its coaction with the supporting bracket, the latter being immovably connected to a means extending therefrom to support same in the desired position during use.
Another object is to provide a receptacle of such construction that the body portion, spreader, bracket and supporting means may be folded into a relatively flat state for packing and shipping.
Another object is to provide a receptacle in which the proportion of the supporting means are such as to largely eliminate rotation of the receptacle when in use and simultaneously maintaining same in the desired position for ready access thereto.
A further object is to provide an article of the character described which is easy to manufacture, efficient and durable and in which the above and other objects may effectively be attained as will hereinafter more fully appear.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the parts are designated by the same numerals throughout the respective views.
Referring to said drawing:
Fig. 1 represents, in perspective, a receptacle embodying the invention as it appears when suspended by its supporting means from a line;
Fig. 2 represents the article illustrated in Fig. 1 when in its substantially flat condition for packing or storage.
Fig. 3 represents fragmentary views of the supporting means, spreader, and bracket for receiving same; the parts being shown in condition prior to being assembled.
Fig. 4 represents, in perspective, the cooperating sections of the above elements shown in Fig. 3 as operably assembled with the bag as in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 5 represents the parts shown in Fig. 3 assembled with the bracket prior to being operatively connected thereto; and
Fig. 6 represents the elements of Fig. 5 when operatively connected to the bracket.
The bag or receptacle 1, normally made of any suitable fabric, such as canvas, or synthetic material, is provided at its upper edge (referring to Figs. 1 and 2) with a hem or stitched portion 2, having an opening at 3 to receive the flexible spreader 4, which serves to hold the bag open. Spreader 4, which may be of wire, or other suitable material, is provided at both ends with relatively 2,917,260 Patented Dec. 15, 1959 2 short sections 5, 6 bent at an angle to the spreader for purposes to be described.
A bracket 7, cut out at 8 and 9, is provided with arms 10 and 11, said arms having intermediate transverse outwardly bulged sections 12 and 13, plus inwardly turned end sections 14 and 15, the latter being adapted to enter the cut-outs 8, 9 in bracket 7 to secure spreader 4 and a bail 16 thereto in operative position as is clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The bail 16 is normally of such gauge and dimension as to lend itself to shaping by automatic machinery and includes a loop 17 adapted for use in hanging the article on a nail or peg (not shown). Shoulders 18 and 19, are formed of sufficient scope and distance apart to engage a line (see Fig. 1) in such a manner as to substantially eliminate the swinging of the receptacle out of its normally eificient operative position and maintaining the mouth thereof in an easily accessible location. Bail 16 terminates in a pair of substantially parallel depending ends 20 and 21, which, in operative position, are above and opposed to ends 5, 6 of spreader 4.
The article may be assembled by threading spreader 4 through hem 2 in bag 1 so that its ends 5 and 6 emerge through opening 3 in an upright position. Bracket 7 is placed as shown in Fig. 5, bail 16 located thereon, and ends 14 and 15 caused to enter cut-outs 8 and 9 and clinched over as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The parts are so constructed and arranged that bail 16 is held to bracket 7 as if formed integral therewith and is not movable with respect thereto; whereas spreader 4 is swingable in sections 12 and 13. Depending arms 20, 21 engage the back of bracket 7 as do ends 5, 6 of the spreader when the receptacle is in its .usable position as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
When it is desired to, ship or store the article it may be folded substantially flat (Fig. 2) by collapsing the upper portion of the flexible bag and swinging bracket 7, carrying bail 16, thereacross, thereby making the article easy to store or ship in quantity.
Since it is evident that various changes may be made in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, we do not intend to be limited to the specific embodiment herein shown and described except as set forth in the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. A clothes pin bag comprising the combination with a receptacle open at one end of means for holding said end open, said means including a bendable spreader having both ends bent at substantially right angles to the plane of said spreader, a unitary support for said spreader including a flat plate, cut-outs in said plate, arms integral with and angled from said plate, bulged portions in said arms for receiving said spreader, reduced end portions on said arms adapted to enter said cut-outs, suspension means comprising an elongated wire bail, angled portions engaged by said reduced end portions for holding same to said plate, and shoulder sections of said bail adapted to engage a support therefor at substantially spaced intervals.
2. An article of the character described comprising in combination a receptacle body portion open at one end, means for maintaining said end open, a unitary support for said means, and a suspension means fixed to said unitary support, said first named means being swingably mounted on said unitary support, said first named means and said suspension means being in lateral and longitudinal contact with a surface of said unitary support when in suspended operative condition, said unitary support comprising a flat perforated plate, arms integral therewith and angled therefrom, bulge'd sections across each arm, and reduced arm end portions for entering the "perforated platefithejartsbeing so constructed and a1- ranged that the means =-formaintainingthe bodyportion open at one end is swingably engaged in said bulged portions and the suspension means is fixed in position against said-plate. 7
