MEDICAL COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,714, dated January 8, 1884 (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of Scott, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medical Gompounds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an improved medical compound which may be used internally or externally in all cases of inflammation, or as a local remedy for rheumatism, bruises, chilblains, piles, sore eyes, and for other like purposes. I
My improved compound consists of the following ingredients, viz: mutton-.tallow, honey, pine-pitch, beeswax, llHSQQdOll, saltpeter, borax, alum, salt, hens oil, skunks oil, castile-soap, 1audanum,spirits of turpentine, oilof origanum, ether, and oil of Sassafras. These ingredients may be compounded in various proportions, but the following I have found to answer well for general purposes, viz: mutton-tallow, four pounds; honey, two pounds; pine-pitch, four pounds; beeswax, four pounds; linseed-oil, one pint; saltpeter, four ounces; borax, four ounces; alum, four ounces; salt, four ounces; hens oil, or rendered fat from chickens, two pounds; skunk s oil, or rendered fat from skunks, three pounds; oastile-soap, one-half pound; laudanum, four fluid-ounces; spirits of turpentine,two pints oil of origanum,
two fiuidounces; ether, eight fluid-ounces; oil of Sassafras, eight fluid-ounces. These ingredients are intimately mixed in any convenient manner, preferably at a moderate heat, and when thoroughly commingled the compound ,is put up in bottles or otherwise, for use.
Vhen used internally the compound is taken in doses about a quarter of a tea-spoonful, more or less, according to age and constitution. When required for external or local applica tion, it may be used in any desired quantity, as may be indicated by the nature of the disease to be treated. For rheumatism, piles, and kidney or liver complaint the compound may be taken internally, as above directed, with advantage, and at the same time may be applied externally and locally with good effect.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The medical compound for the purposes described, the same consisting of lnutton-tallow, honey, pinepitch, beeswax, linseed-oil, saltpeter, borax, alum, salt, hens oil, skunks oil, castile soap, laud-anum, spirits of turpentine, oil of origanum, ether, and oil of sassafras, combined in about the proportions specified.
