Description
(No Model.) 1 G. W. GILMORE.
BILGE WATER ALARM.
110.291,?11. Patented Jan. 8,1884.
MEMHMIEMBMMN! Q I INVENTOR:
A61 J Mh f BY ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
GEORGE W. GILMORE, OF WEBSTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
BlLGE-WATER ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,711, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed October 15, 1 883. No model.)
To coZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GILMORE, of Webster, in the county of \Vestmorcland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Bilge -Water Alarm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a practical and reliable device to be used on vessels of all kinds for giving an alarm in case the water in the hull rises above a certain level; and to this end my invention consists, principally, 'of the employment of afloat and attached weight and screw for moving a drop-weight or other object for giving the alarm.
The invention also consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
. Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my new and improved bilge-water alarm, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A represents a float, which rests upon the bottom of the water-well in the hull of the barge or boat. To this float A is attached, by means of the rope B, the weight 0, which is a trifle lighter than the float. The rope B passes over the pulley D, secured upon one end of the screw-rod E, which screw is held in a screw-threaded opening made in the uprights F F, placed upon the supporting platform or board G.
H is the drop-weight for making the alarm,
which weight is attached by the cord J to a steam-whistle, a signal flag 'or bell, or to the trigger of a pistol, or other device for sounding the alarm or giving a signal.
The platform or board G may be placed at any desired part of the boat, and it is by preference formed with the hole K, through which the rope B passes, and with the hole L, through which the weight H is adapted to drop for giving the alarm or displaying the signal.
N'Vhen the device is arranged for action, the float A, as above mentioned, will be placed upon the bottom of the water-well of the boat, and the drop-weight H will be placed with its lower end resting upon the support G near cation or in any future applications the edge of the hole L and against the end of the screw E. The weight H will be supported in this position by the brace M, against which the weight rests, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The rope J will then be attached to the alarm or signal. Thus arranged, upon the water entering the hull by leakage or otherwise, the float A, rising with the water, will permit the weight 0 to draw the rope B over pulley D, which will turn the screw E, which will shove off the drop H, which in dropping through the hole L in the platform G will give the alarm or display the signal, thus apprising the watchman that the water in the hull is above the desired level and needs attention.
I do not adandon or dedicate to the public any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this applifor Letters Patent that I may make.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bilge-water alarm, the combination, with a drop-weight, of a screw supported in bearings and abutting against said weight, and provided with a pulley and a float and weight on the opposite ends of a rope passing around said pulley, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a bilge-water alarm, the combination, with the drop-weight H, the screw E, supported in bearings and abutting against the same, and the pulley D on said screw, of the rope B, passing over said pulley, and provided with the float at one end and the weight 0 at the other, the float being heavier than the weight, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a bilge-water alarm, the platform G, provided with the holes K L, the drop-weight H, and the brace M, for supporting the weight upon said platform, in combination with the screw E, provided with the pulley D, the rope B, passing over said pulley, and the float A and weight 0 on opposite ends of the rope, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE W. GILMORE.
