To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JESSE D. DE BERRY, of Smithville, Clay county, Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Folding Egg-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved case for shipping eggs and other articles, which case can be folded very compact-1y, so as to occupy very little space when not in use and while being returned to the shipper.

The invention consists in a folding egg-case constructed with low side and end pieces fixed to the bottom, side boards hinged to the upper edges of the side pieces, and boards hinged to the ends of the side boards, and partitions hinged to the bottom of the case and to a low partition in the case, whereby the case can be folded very compactly when not in use. The end boards are provided with hasps having slots, through which staples on the side boards can pass.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved folding eggcase, showing the cover removed. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, parts being broken out and parts shown in section, the case being folded; and Fig. 3 is a side view of part of the case which is shown folded, parts being broken out and others shown in section.

The case is constructed with low sides and end pieces, A B, nailed to the edges of the bottom C. The height of the side and end pieces is preferably equal to onefourth of the'height of the case. To the upper edges of the side pieces, A, side boards, D, are hinged in such a manner that the said hinged side boards can be folded down toward the interior of the case. To each side board, D, one end board, E, is hinged by hinges F, the two end boards, E, being hinged to the opposite ends of the op-' posite side boards. On the free end of each end board, E, a hinged hasp, G, is fastened, which is provided at its free end with a slot, a, through which astaple, H, is adapted to pass, which projects from the outer surface of a side board, D, at the end opposite the one at which the hinge F is fastened. A locking pin or key, J, can be passed through the staple after the said staple has been passed through the end of the hasp. To the upper surface of the bottom 0 a low central partition, K, extending from side to side, is secured, and to the upper edge of the partition K a partition, K, is hinged in such a manner that it can be folded down. In each compartment a partition, L, is hinged in such manner that it can be folded down, the said partitions swinging in opposite directions. The partitions K and L are provided with handle-knobs M. The case is provided with a cover, N, having downwardly-projecting flanges, O, at the side edges, and having the upper surface beveled off at the end edges, as at m, to permit the hinges F to fold over the thin beveled edges, when the ends B are folded down over the cover N, as in Figs. 2 and 3. The crates are placed in the four compartments formed by the partitions K L.

hen the egg-case is not in use-for instance, when it is being returned to the shipper-the partitions L and K are folded down, the side boards, D, are folded over the partitions L K, the cover N is placed on the sides D, and the end boards, E, are folded over the cover N. Then the end boards, E, are locked in place by means of the hasps G, the staples II, and the keys J. v

Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A folding eggease constructed, substantially as herein shown and described,with low side and end pieces secured to the bottom, side boards hinged to the upper edges of the side pieces, and end boards hinged to the ends of the side boards, as set forth.

2. A folding egg-ease constructed with low side and end pieces secured to the bottom, side boards hinged to the upper edges of the side pieces, end boards hinged to the ends of the side boards, and folding partitions hinged to the bottom of the case, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pur pose set forth.

3. In a folding egg-case, the combination, with the side and end pieces, A B, secured to IOC the bottom C, of the side boards, D, hinged to the upper'edg'es of the side pieces, the end boards, E, hinged to the ends of the side boards, the hinged hasps Gr, secured to the free ends of the end boards, and the staples H on the side boards, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 4. In a folding egg-case, the combination, with the side and end pieces, A B, secured to the bottom 0, of the side boards, D, hinged to the upper edges of the side pieces, the end boards, l E, hinged to the ends of the side boards, and the cover N, having the upper surface beveled at the end edges, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
