WILLIAM BROWNLOW ATKINSON AND `JOI-IN HOWE FOSTER, `OF FRANK- LIN, KENTUCKY, `ASSIGrNORS TO THE AMERICAN COMBINATION DOOR LOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PERMUTATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,665, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed September 18, 1883. (Model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM B. ATKIN- sON and J. H. FOSTER, both of Franklin, in the county of Simpson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Locks.l of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexedldrawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates `to combination or permutation door-looks; and it consists of an improvement on a part of the lock shown in Letters Patent No. 277,188, granted to the above-named Wm. B. Atkinson under date of May 8, 1883. In the said patent is shown a combination-lock having ward-Wheels in engagement with each side of a bolt having segmental and straight longitudinal slots, and an adjustable tumbler having clutches forsetting the ward-wheels 4either to hold or to `release the bolt. The tumbler is made adjustable by means 'of a spindle formed in two parts, screwing one into the other, to provide for a longitudinal play in` the casing of the sleeve supporting the `tumbler and knobs.
Our present improvement consists of the meansfor adjusting the tumbler to throw it in and out of engagement with the ward-wheels, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of the lock, partlyin section, and with the capplate and one of the ward-wheels removed; and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the lock through the knobs, showing part of a door.
A indicates the casing of the lock, provided with tubular projections B at its sides for supporting the ward wheels C C. The wardwheels are provided with lugs D, adapted to be turned through the segmental slot-s E in the bolt F until arrested by the movable stops G in said slots or set in alignment with the straight longitudinal slots II, to allow the bolt to be moved.
Through alchamber, I, in the bolt is passed a sleeve, J, having a longitudinal slot, K, and in the sleeve is arranged a spindle, L, having a spiral groove, M, and a sleeve, N, arranged on the spindle and engaging with it by mea-ns of a lug, O, fitted in the said groove.
To the sleeve N is connected the tumbler l?, which is adapted to move in the slot K as the sleeve N moves along the spindle L. The tumbler is provided with clutches or segmental gears Q at its sides, which are adapted to engage the clutchesor gears of the ward-wheels when the tumbler is shifted from one to the other. The knobs R engage with the sleeve J by means of lugs S, tting in the slot K, and the ends of the spindle L project through the knobs, and are provided with crosspieces or handles T, by which the spindle is to be rora-ted to shift the tumbler. The faces of the knobs are preferably made concave, and the handles T are countersunlc therein.
The handles may be made in the form of WILLIAM BROWNLOW ATKINSON. JOHN llOWE FOSTER.
