6 Claims. (Cl. 40-102) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders for index and other pads.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved pad holder of such construction as to be capable of being readily mounted on a dial telephone instrument adjacent the dial thereof whereby the pad is positioned for convenient and easy use.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved holder for index and other pads having novel means for detachably connecting a pad thereto whereby the pad may be inserted and removed whenever desired.
An important object of the invention is to provide an improved holder, of the character described, having coacting means for removably attaching a loose-leaf pad thereto and so constructed that the sheets of the pad may be individually inserted and removed.
A particular object of the invention is to provide an improved holder, of the character described, having means for securing the same to the finger stop of a dial telephone instrument whereby the holder may be mounted on the instrument irrespective of its type and without interfering with its operation.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention and attached to the finger stop of a dial telephone instrument,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, of the holder with the top sheet of the pad shown in broken lines,
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the holder,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pad connecter,
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view, partly in section, showing the connecter detached, and
Fig. 6 is a view, similar to Fig. 5, and taken on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a pad holder embodying the principles of the invention and adapted to be mounted on a conventional telephone instrument 11 adjacent its dial 12 by attachment to the angular finger stop 13 of the dial. The holder includes a rectangular base 14 having a flat bottom plate or wall 15, a longitudinal side wall 16 and upper and lower end walls 17 and 18. As shown most clearly in Figs. 5 and 6, the marginal walls 16, 17 and 18 are of little height, being in the nature of upright flanges, and extend above and a slight distance below the bottom plate or wall for reinforcing the base. Opposite the side wall 16, a narrow, reinforcing flange 19 depends from the base plate and is connected to said wall by spaced, transverse bars or ribs 20 which underlie said base plate (Fig. 3). The side wall 16 is of greater transverse thickness than the other walls and has spaced recesses 21 in its underside to Patented Dec. 8, 1959 facilitate molding of the holder of suitable plastic materia For securing the holder 10 to the finger stop 13, a boss or extension 22 projects laterally outward from the medial portion of the side wall 16 at an oblique angle substantiallycomplementary to the angular position of said finger stop. As shown by the numeral 23, the underside of the extension 22 is recessed in the same manner as the side wall. A central groove or recess 24 extends longitudinally of the extension and has inner and outer, transverse end walls 25 and 26, the inner end wall separating the recess from an axially-alined opening 27 in the side wall. The outer end wall 26 is of much greater thickness than the inner wall 25 and may have its underside recessed. A screw 28 having its head disposed in the wall opening 27, extends longitudinally of the recess 24 through its inner wall 25 for bearing against its outer wall 26 and having a nut 29 threaded thereon. A rectangular clip or ring 30, of suitable metal, has its flat inner end confined upon the screw 28 by the nut 29 and extends longitudinally of the central recess and through slots or openings 31 in the outer wall 26. The clip 30 is of sufiicient length to project outwardly of the extension 22 for engagement around the finger stop 13. Upon tightening of the screw, the clip is drawn inwardly into positive, binding engagement with the finger stop to confine said stop between the outer portion of said clip and the outer wall of the extension. Due to the complementary angular relationship of the finger stop and outer end wall of the extension, the holder base 14 is mounted in close proximity to the telephone instrument 11 and has its longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the face of said instrument and particularly its dial 12 so as to facilitate use of the support provided by the holder.
Although the holder is adapted primarily to support an index pad 32, any suitable type of pad may be mounted thereon. Preferably, the pad 32 is loose-leaf and is detachably connected to the holder base '14 by a novel connecter or mounting element 33, of similar plastic material, which includes a flat rectangular plate 34. A complementary opening or recess 35 is formed in the base plate 15 and has its bottom wall 35 oifset downwardly of said base plate for supporting the connecter plate 34 (Figs. 5 and 6). At the upper margin of the recess 35, its bottom wall 36 has a row of spaced openings 37 for receiving complementary, flat lugs or projections underlying and extending outwardly from the upper margin of the connecter plate (Fig. 4). A similar lug 39 underlies and projects outwardly from the medial portion of the lower margin of the connecter plate and is adapted to function as a frictional catch or latch for the connecter.
As shown most clearly in Fig. 3, the transverse rib 20 at the lower margin of the recess 35 has its medial portion offset downwardly to provide a keeper 40 for coacting with the latch lug 39. A medial opening 41, of relatively large area, is formed in the recess wall 36 immediately above the keeper 40 to accommodate the latch lug and permit pushing of the connecter plate 34 outwardly to disengage said lug from said keeper. Preferably, the width of the opening 41 is substantially equal to the length of the keeper. An elongated opening or slot 42 is formed in the base plate 15 immediately below and in parallel relation to the keeper for increasing its flexibility. The connecter plate is attached to the holder base by engaging its lugs 38 in the openings 37 and then swinging said connecter plate inwardly or downwardly toward the bottom wall 36 of the recess 35 to engage said lugs beneath the base plate and force the latch lug 39 past and into frictional engagement with the keeper 40. Due to such frictional engagement and the provision of the opening 41, the connecter may be readily detached whenever desired.

Also, it is contemplated-that an index or other type of pad could be mounted in any suitable manner on the holder. It is noted that theconnecter plate 34 is of relatively large area :for supporting the lugs 38 and 39 and hooks 43 as Well as to facilitate insertion and removal of said plate.
The'foregoing description of the invention is explanatory thereof and'various changes in the size, shape and materials, as 'well as in the details of 'theillustrated 'construction may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A holder for index and'other pads including arectangular baseplate having a shallow recess of relatively large area, a complementary plate frictionally engaged in the recess and having its upper surface substantially coplanar with the upper surface of the base plate, and,
